34:00 There's a saying in the military: blame goes uphill, shit rolls downhill. I guarantee you that if CEOs started facing complete asset forfeiture and prison time, they'd get a whole lot more involved with ensuring these sweat shops don't happen. The 'plausible deniability' line is bullshit. The entire reason all these companies go to the third world for their manufacturing is that they are cheaper. The reason that they are cheaper is because they don't have to follow our labor, safety, and environmental laws. There is no way people like Tim Cook do not know this. If they genuinely cared about such things, they'd use American labor because, unlike the third world, we have a robust network of laws, labor unions, and watch dog groups that make infractions unlikely to slip past the radar for very long.

This reminds me of something that happened at an old job; My employer, a customer service agency (lets call it company X) had a contract with a store for e-commerce (company Y). When a new manager came in for company X, company Y was uncertain that he would be able to do the job efficiently. To be able to secure his position, he promised to cut costs by 50% for company Y. Obviously, as you can expect, a lot of people in higher up positions were fired or quit over wage cuts, and our holiday overtime bonuses were delayed by months. The quality of the service fell drastically, so company Y asked to renegotiate the terms of the contract. They agreed they'd keep the contract if company X would commit to keeping the costs around 50%, while increasing the quality of the service... You can see where I'm going with this; essentially companies bully each other into cutting costs as an alternative to improving service quality- both companies want a balance of both, but at the end of the day if the service quality goes higher company X still won't pay company Y more money.

Where I work, they were treating my department (I work in manufacturing) like crap. We were paid on time, sure, but the disrespect in all other areas was insane. Worse, we were paid less than other comparable jobs in the area. In the middle of all that, the bosses made personal purchases and stored them on company grounds. Purchases costing in excess of $400k. Most people would look at this situation and go "Well, you're lucky to have a job." True, but it doesn't discount the issues. Or they would say "You could always find another job." Normally yes, but not so much in 2020. Or "You are just grunts making parts. Like you are so special." This last bit is the part that, though not all of us may have realized it specifically, is the worst incorrect thing. Without our department of some 20 people, the entire half a billion dollar a year company (which is not terribly huge at some ~120 people) would not just grind to a halt, it would collapse. No one has any SOP for the parts we make. Nothing is up to date within 3 years, and significant changes to procedure and technique have been made to accommodate new models, and clients/engineer requests. Yes, a person working where I work can get spooled up and start manufacturing parts within a few weeks. Within a month, they can be a useful member of the team with relatively little continued supervision. But that requires that they are trained and watched over by the people working there. If we all quit, there is *NO ONE* in the company outside our department that could build the parts, nor train new people on how to build parts. The production would stop, the clients and contracts could not be fulfilled, and the company would face incredibly hard times. All because 20 or so people decided to move on and work elsewhere if they so chose. Most employees, regardless of skill, rarely realize that they are important to their employer, and most employers really would rather not bring the subject up for obvious reasons.

@jacob_90s3 жыл бұрын
@@ChamplooMusashi Not true. It increases profits in the short term, but the long term effects are still damaging to businesses, as it discourages productivity, discourages workers innovating to make their job and the company more efficient. Not too mention the lower wages often inhibits the workers themselves from being able to buy the very product they're making, prevents them from better they're own lives which increases demand and drives innovation in other areas, which can often benefit the original company either directly or indirectly, and on and on and on and on. The same damn thing has occurred dozens of times across history, from slavery in Rome to slavery in the South. Not only do you earn money to buy your own 'youthful stuff' it exposes youth to a work ethic. It depends on the amount of work those people are expected to do. Further more, if it is my business and I want to expose my children to my business and industry to make sure my kids get an edge on others, offering them an opportunity to 'work' in my business in holidays or after school is beneficial to me and my kids.

you really aren't going to avoid it no matter what you do unless you go into the woods and make your own everything. at some point you have participated in profiting slave labor in some extended fashion. even when you buy things "made in america" the degree to which they are "made" has little regulation. the parts could be assembled in other countries and then the larger unit assembled in the united states. a dryer could have its circuit board printed in mexico, the non digital devices from china, and the 50$ of sheet metal manufactured in america and then assembled. at some point associative profit will find its way to exploitation of labor. its the nature of the beast that is industry

Check out where the cobalt comes from. Kids as young as FIVE are working and dying in mines in the Congo, where 70% of the worlds cobalt comes from, a vital component in manufacture of lithium batteries. chinese business also owns half of the mines there and most of the trading houses where cobalt mined by children can be 'lost' with legitimately mined cobalt. Not only is your phone made by children, but so is your tablet, electric car, home solar batteries, watches, laptops, etc.

I get what you are saying and I agree with it completely. Honestly though my opinion is that people with the authority to do something about this disgusting practice, usually get paid to sweep it under the rug, or 'pretend' to enforce that such behaviors cannot happen again while they look the other way. Don't get me wrong there will be workers that have the courage to put their foot down and stand for what is right and nowadays thanks to social media, will be heard, and may have a brief impact. Give it time though and this will blow over and people will keep forgetting about it like you mentioned and it will keep happening behind the scenes with 'people' who can make a difference but are to afraid to or rather benefit from it. I have no degree in business, so I may be wrong here, but don't corporations such as Apple Inc. have a code of ethics? if anything shouldn't the board of directors or the executives who oversee supply chains be held accountable? But of course not. Because they are rich and there are loopholes for rich and powerful corporations. XD
