Micheal faked forgiving Fredo. In that scene he looks at Al Neri as Fredo is hugging him. Most people don't catch that the first time

You need to watch with more attention to detail. Michael looks at Neri, his hit man. What did you think was going to happen? Don’t you remember when Michael said he didn’t want anything to happen to Fredo as long as their mother was alive?

I don't know how anyone can miss that. With Michael Corleone, his deadpan face, although it barely changes, it speaks volumes. And his looks, mannerisms and gaze is more important than his actual dialogue. It's very important to pay attention to all of that.

Neri gets the message from Michael's expression, but seems a bit sorrowful in receiving it. Neri followed orders, but unlike the man he replaced, Luca Brasi, Neri had a bit of a conscience.

What you're missing is that this movie is covering actual history in Cuba. The night in question is when Fidel Castro took over. And the mafia actually did have a deal with the previous Cuban government to run Casinos. But once the Communist took power, those plans went out the window. This is why the mafia turned their attention to Las Vegas.

As a kid, I saw GONE WITH THE WIND at a HUGE theater, the like of which doesn't exist anymore (late '60s). At Intermission, everyone got up to stretch, go to the restroom, go to the concession stand. They had a small lounging area screened off to each side where you could sit and talk, and still see when the film began again. It was great! Nothing like it today.

Michael doesn't look at you, he looks through you. He scans, he searches for whatever is behind your gaze. It is a necessary trait in his world of treachery, and danger. He's always in danger, cause as Shakespeare wrote, "Uneasy lies the head, that wears the crown." Part 2 is deeper, uglier, mainly because you are watching a man losing his soul. And in the end, all that is left is a man alone literally, mournfully sitting on a bench, with tattered memories. The great critic Pauline Kael gave what is IMHO the most perceptive view of this towering film: Its a moody meditation, on power.

The birth order is Santino (Sonny), Frederico (Fredo), Michael and Constanzia (Connie). So, Sonny was intended to succeed his father, and when that didn’t happen, Michael had to step up since Fredo was not considered to be cut out for it.

My thoughts on Michael/Fredo at the end, "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". That's why Michael played along with 'forgiving' Fredo. It caused Fredo to relax and made it easy to kill him. Vito Corleone had no siblings, so he never had to worry about a brother betraying him. Vito's devotion to family was a luxury Michael could never afford. The tragedy of these movies is how all their efforts to protect the family actually doom the family, because it's all founded on crime and corruption. Michael having his own brother killed is the peak of that tragedy.

They couldn’t get the actor for Clemenza to come back so they killed him off between the movies, and replaced him with Frankie They couldn’t get Marlon Brando to come back, so they casted Deniro as Young Vito I believe in both cases, it was money issues. Also, killing Fredo was never “off the table” Mike just didn’t want to hurt his mother. So he waited till mom died, then did it anyway.😂

i have watched both movies dozens of time and I like them both equally. My impression of the first godfather is that Brando amazingly made a mob boss likeable and Michael's journey made you root for him. I also like Sonny's character as well as the Turk. And the ending was unbelievable. For Part 2, Michael becomes completely dark and evil. The acting in 2 specific scenes, 1) Kay telling Michael she had an abortion and 2) Freddo wanting Respect after being Stepped over, were brilliantly acted by Al Pacino, Dianne Keaton and John Cazale. And I loved Hyman Roth's character too. So, they are 2 of the 3 greatest mob movies, the other being Goodfellows.

That wasn’t the “power of Michael’s look” that ‘convinced Pentangeli’ not to testify against him. Michael arranged to bring Pentangeli’s brother across from Italy. He was sitting beside Michael. This action (bringing him over to ‘support’ Frank) was actually a warning to him that he has his brother… and who knows what might happen to him if Frank testifies. It was intimidation and passive threat.

I think Michael had Fredo killed because he saw Fredo as a liability. Michael told him to "never take sides against the family again" in Las Vegas in the first movie, but despite that, Fredo betrayed Michael. The Rosatto (sp?) brothers knew that Fredo was weak, and were able to use him against his brother. It doesn't really matter if Michael reconciled with Fredo at the end personally because he needed to kill Fredo nonetheless so that nobody else could use him against the family.

Pacino was PRETTY good?? Michael Corleone's character, and Al Pacino's performances MADE both movies, and I would say are arguably Pacino's greatest performances. PRETTY good. I agree that Brando is the greater actor, as far as natural talent, but Al comes a close second. That's why Coppola fought so hard to keep Pacino as Michael when the studio wanted a tall, blonde, Nordic, non-Italian to play Michael. He knew against the entire industry's push to take over the role and cast who they wanted, that Al was the best & most talented to pull it off brilliantly, and of course he did

33:07 Not having Brando during the closing flashback likely came down to money. For example, he was cut from "Superman II" because he wanted to be paid the same amount as he was given for the 1st film ($1M) . . . even though all of his footage had already been shot. They even had to reshoot a stand-in for his hand because they could not recycle any of his shots from "Superman: The Movie".

@@user-michael77 , that is what I said. Salkind and Spengler cut Brando because he wanted to be paid the same amount for "Superman II" as he was for "Superman", even though all of his footage was shot and ADR work was completed. Hyman Roth ok'd the hit on Frank. The "Michael Corolone say's hello" line was meant to make Frankie think Mike double crossed him so he would testify at the Senate hearing. That explanation does not make sense since he was supposed to be dead. The guy that chokes out Frankie says, "Michael Corleone says hello." , but he doesn't kill Frankie. Frankie was supposed to THINK that Michael was behind it. It was, in fact Hyman Roth. Vito kills Fanucci, in part, because Fanucci CLAIMED to be a member of The Black Hand, but Vito sees Fanucci get his throat cut. No harm came to the two boys that did it, so Vito realises that Fanucci is a member of nothing. He sees no reason to pay him, so he kills him. Michael never forgave Fredo, but he did forgive Connie, so he 'accepted' Fredo to please her. I'm not sure, but I think that Connie is told that Fredo drowned.

When you guys check out Godfather 3 or "Coda", it would probably be best to see the coda version since it's francis ford coppolla's true vision of the third movie. Althought you should check out what changes that he did. Godfather 3 came out way after the first two, it is a very different movie. The director's cut is said to be an improvement by critics but fans are divisive on some of the changes since there is a new ending to the movie. It would be interesting to see your reaction to the third one because it closes off the trilogy and provides an ending to these characters that we've grown to know especially Michael Corleone. In Coppolla's word, it's supposed to be viewed as a epilogue and not as a part 3 which is why he was dissatisifed with the original decisions back when the movie came out in 1990 and was given the opportunity to recut 30 years later.

The hit on Michael was by Pantangeli, but it was a double cross set up by Roth. He didn't want to kill Fredo, but he knew he had to. Pacino and DiNiro never did a scene together, until the great Michael Mann movie, Heat! Ironically, his first big feature, was a movie starring James Can( Santino) called, Thief! Michael Mann was ahead of the curve! He also did the first full movie featuring Hannibal Lector called, Manhunter!Directed by Coppola, all his immediate family are actors/directors. Sophia, Nicolas Cage, and Connie...is Rocky Balboa's wife! Coppola also did Apacalypse Now, and The Outsiders, chock packed full of future stars! Also in this series, Sonny's iligitimate son, with the woman he's screwing behind the door, plays a major role in 3! In part 2 the FBI agent is Harry Dean Stanton! He's been in every movie made since the silent era!😅😅😅. Outsiders, Red Dawn, Godfather 2, Dillinger, Green Mile, Alien, and others. RIP to him. The guy Carlo, is still alive and very well connected, and has avoided death, even in foreign countries, because of his Ties. He wrote 1 or 2 books, best sellers, about his businesses, casinos, mob ties, and various stories. He tells it point blank, who and why, killed JFK, RFK, and Monroe. And no one has tried to sue him from the Monroe estate or the Kennedys, because they know every word he said, is true! And they dont want him spilling his guts off, in open court! Type in here, carlo from godfather, tells mob stories! The hit on Sonny, they guy that designed the hit and all the exploding blood speefs, he said, he never put so many creepy ass blood spleefs on anyone ever before! A masterclass of comedy writing, movie was made in the 90s as a semi parody of this movie, well woth watching. Starring Vito, Clemenza from part 2, and Matthew Broderick called, The Freshman. Well worth watching! The movie guy's story is partially true. Frank Sinatra was a huge star in the 30s and 40s but wanted to break into acting, and in good parts but his star was fading. He and his crew started hanging out with huge mob people. They were known as The Rat Pack. Dean, Him, Peter, Sammy, and Joey. Suddenly frank gets parts in 2 of the biggest movies ever....From Here to Eternity and The Manchurian Candidate! Vito was better than Michael, because he was a family man first, before he was a boss. And this is one series, where part 2 is better than 1!!!

31:47...No,Vito would have not been happy with Mcheal killing Fredo...But it had to be done--He'd never be able to trust him again- It was obviuos he was resentful of Micheal --that makes a sore spot that never heals. He might've tried to take over in the future by teaming up with Micheal's enemies. FYI: Godfather 2 is the ONLY sequel to win the Oscar in movie history.

FOLE, reminder now that you have seen The Godfather Part 2 you can now watch The Freshman(1990) starring Marlon Brando. I believe you will really enjoy the movie, which has as excellent cast, and Brando is truly excellent.

Coppola could not come to a contractual agreement with Brando for GF2. Which is why they had to be creative and film a “surprise” party as the flashback scene without Brando. I like GF2 more than GF because you get both a prequel and sequel about how Vito came to power and how it differs from Michael. True, the Corleone Family saga plays out like a Shakespearean tragedy. One Godfather, who was beloved by the neighborhood, family, and feared by his enemies. Another Godfather who was feared by everyone including his own family. Do yourselves a favor and finish out the trilogy with GF3. It’s been unfairly criticized because it cannot measure up to the high bar set by both 1&2. But, now after much time, I think its a fine movie and finishes the Corleone saga. Back in the day, when movies in theaters were long, there was a brief intermission to use the restroom or get refreshments. My mom told me this when she saw it in the theater.

Fantastic reaction to this epic/iconic godfather sequel that is most definitely better than the first one. But in my book the first and second Godfather movies are equally iconic.

I enjoyed your video very much. To answer to your questions: a) the kiss Don Michael gaves to Fredo, is the "Kiss of Death" (Sicilian message), b) Fanucci's hand move, is a sign of Power & Authority. Caesar was doing the same move!!!

I don't feel like Vito would have been happy" No, he wouldn't. I've read a theory that the three brothers each inherited or represent one aspect of Vito's personality - Sonny had his passion, Fredo his gentleness, and MIchael had his brains. Vito wouldn't have been as coldblooded as Michael; he always tried to be reasonable first and used violence as a last resort, Michael uses it as the first.

The best thing about this movie is its rewatchability. With so many sub plots intertwining in the present and past, it takes quite a few watches to catch all the moving parts. There's a reason the first two Godfathers are held in the esteem they are. III? Worth watching, but don't go into it expecting this. It's okay, but suffers from inate expectations.

Plenty of movies over the years have had intermissions. The first one I remember seeing with one was Titanic in 1997, but that’s a tradition that goes way back. The Cowboys starring John Wayne had one, and The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. The Hateful Eight had one, I think, though I didn’t see that in theaters.

The part of Connie's fiancé, Merle Johnson, was played by Troy Donahue, whose given name was Merle Johnson. I think the attempted strangling of Frank Pentangeli (they call him "Five Angels" because Pentangeli means five angels) was a calculated botch. They wanted Frank to live through it and be traumatized, with the words "Michael Corleone says hello" still ringing in his ears. Hyman Roth figured -- correctly -- this would turn Frank against Michael. I think "the look" Frank's brother gave him was to tell him it was shameful and wrong to break the law of omertà (silence). Frank got the message and committed suicide rather than blab. When the prostitute was killed, Michael's number one hitman, Al Neri, was present. He drugged the Senator and murdered the girl. No question. Michael killed Fredo because Fredo had allowed some of Roth's men, who had accompanied Johnny Ola, into the party at the beginning of the 1958 sequence at Lake Tahoe. Roth's men riddled Michael's bedroom with bullets. Fredo had set Michael up for a hit, but was too foolish to understand what he'd done until it happened. (He tells Michael this in the scene that ends with Michael's exiling him.) Michael tells Tom that he believes Roth's hitmen were killed right away "by someone close to us." I believe it was Fredo who killed them. He saw what had happened, realized that it was his fault, and couldn't allow the hitmen to talk.

Brando wasn't in this movie because he wanted too much money for the small scene Vito would be in so his character's birthday celebration was off screen. Fredo was killed because he colluded with Roth in the assassination attempt that he was told was to be a kidnapping. the scenes in Cuba were at the time of the Cuban revolution in 1959 when Castro and the communists took over Cuba.

Guess y'all didn't see any Lord of the Rings movies in the theater, they had intermissions. Now y'all have to watch Cazale's other three films also nominated for Best Picture. Also maybe De Niro and Pacino's two best films where they actually were on screen together, Heat and The Irishman.

he older guy that was one of Vito's associates, the one that cut his wrists, he did that so his family in Sicily/Italy would be safe. Micheal brought that other man (from Italy/Sicily) to the court because it was a show to him that they have his family, plus in the Mafia world, snitches are the worst kind of guy, especially when it is to the police.

This is the best sequel ever made and the best sequel movie review ever. I really enjoyed it. I am sharing it on my Twitter. I love the laughter too. Finally there was a videotape sold in the 1990s where the editors took these two movies and let the movie play out in the order of events with no flashbacks

From what I understand this is obviously a trilogy where one brother dies in each film, Sonny in the first, Fredo the second and in the third, well, it was supposed to be Tom Hagen in the final film but Duvall chose not to appear. So Michael loses his brothers and is left alone, try as he might to escape they kept dragging him back in....by the way Coppola could sum his movies up with one word, The Godfather was 'succession'...

Many of the longer classic movies had an intermission, and I wish some of the newer films would have had one too, looking at you Peter Jackson. I don't know why they stopped doing that. Gone with the Wind, Spartacus, and the Ten Commandments had intermissions, and I'm pretty sure Ben Hur and The Robe had intermissions as well. The last movie that I saw with an intermission - and this was in a theater - was Gettysburg.

There were a lot of movies with intermissions in the fifties and sixties. In the sixties, when I was a teenager, I remember intermissions in My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, The Great Race, The Blue Max, Lawrence of Arabia, and even Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, which was hardly long enough to justify one. But I don't remember any intermissions in the seventies except for this movie. Does anyone know of another from that decade?
