The old man singing at the wedding, with his hand thrusts that got everyone screaming with laughter, was singing, "Iddu va, iddu veni," which means "He goes, he comes" in Sicilian. The song, "Luna Mezz' o Mare," is suggestive. A young woman asks her mother to pick a husband for her. The mother says, "If I get you a carpenter, he'll nail you; if I get you a fisherman, he'll fish you; if I get you a blacksmith, he'll hammer you," each followed by the "He goes, he comes" chorus.

@@Brunetto46 Both Sides Italian here. The Godfather movies were never meant to be a glorification of the Mafia and the story clearly reflects that. In the opening scenes Vito Corleone is shown as an omnipotent force with people literally kissing his ring and by the end he is a physically broken man with one son dead and the second and third movies end with Michael suffering a similar fate. Moreover, Copolla himself said he didn't consider them Mafia movies so much as the story of a king and his three sons.

I've told this true story on other Godfather reaction videos, but since you asked, here it is again... The first time I saw this movie was on TV, in a living room filled with actual Mafia members. I was in my early 20's, and had just completed my military term of service. I was staying at my uncle's house for a week, to help my cousin get through a rough time (drug abuse related). My uncle (through marriage) was Italian, and grew up in a neighborhood where a number of his friends ended up working for various Mafia businesses (gaming equipment, gambling, vending machines). At one point my uncle expressed an interest in working for one of the businesses, but my aunt forbade it. So while he didn't end up working for the mob, he remained friends with them, and became acquainted with many Associates, Soldiers and higher up (mob hierarchy). During that week, The Godfather was scheduled for TV broadcast on one of the big three networks. It was only the 2nd time it aired (early 80's) since it's theatrical release. This was a few years before VCRs and video rentals were widely available, so watching that movie on TV was a big deal. On that day my uncle said he was going to cook up some Italian food, and invite some "friends" over to watch the movie. The moment they stepped in the door and began talking, I knew who they were. Before the movie began, everyone was talking and laughing loudly, but then as soon as the movie started, they all went silent, as if at church. During commercials, they gave running commentary and critique on the story details as if it was personal, which it was. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, from watching that incredible movie for the first time, and because of who I was watching it with! There's more to this story, which includes our childhood babysitter being a genuine mafia princess. And she lived next door!

"Leave the gun. Take the cannoli." Good call. 👍 Fun Fact: Lenny Montana (Luca Brasi) was so nervous about working with Marlon Brando that in the first take of their scene together, he flubbed some lines. Director Francis Ford Coppola liked the genuine nervousness and used it in the final cut. The scenes of Luca practicing his speech were added later. Dark Filmmaking Fact: Cinematographer Gordon Willis earned himself the nickname "The Prince Of Darkness," since his sets were so underlit. Paramount Pictures executives initially thought that the footage was too dark, until persuaded otherwise by Willis and Francis Ford Coppola that it was to emphasize the shadiness of the Corleone family's dealings. Historical Fact: Most of the cars in the movie have wooden bumpers. Bumpers were removed by car owners during World War II, and replaced with wooden ones. The chrome ones were turned in to help with the war effort. After the war, it took several years for them to be replaced.

"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man." -Vito Corleone Fun Fact: Marlon Brando wanted to make Don Corleone look like a bulldog, so he stuffed his cheeks with cotton wool for the audition. For the actual filming, he wore a mouthpiece made by a dentist. This appliance is on display in the American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York. Also, when the grandson gets scared by the Godfather with the orange peel in his mouth. That boy's reaction was unscripted and so was Marlon Brando's reaction to the boy actually being frightened. It fit the scene so well, they left it in. The Godfather is my all time favorite film and I can't wait for you ladies to react to "The Godfather: Part II" (1974), which is the greatest sequel ever made!

This story is Michael's story, not Vito's. It's his fall from grace, that is the center of the film. The baptism is probably the most famous scene in movie history. Michael becomes a Godfather TWICE in that moment. To his nephew, as well as cementing his irredeemable ascent to being head of the Mafia. Stunning.

Connie's reaction to Carlo's murder is probably less perplexing when we remember this was the '50s. We're watching from an age where we and society have grown accustomed to single mothers, widows, where divorce is now commonplace, where even gay marriage is a (fairly) accepted occurrence. But back then, divorce occurred, of course, but was much more looked down on by wider society, viewed as something done by the Hollywood celebs who got serially married and the less-respectable classes, and being widowed was much more of a tragedy than today. An' remember, they're also Catholic. But yeah, definitely watch Part II, which is not only widely regarded as being possibly better than this first one, but might be interesting for more on this.

I'll just add that Michael might not be the most lovable movie character. But if you think of this story as a tragedy, in the classic sense, I think you will have gained sympathy for him by the end of the second movie. It is the tragedy of Michael Corleone. (If he had refused to take reign, his family would have lost everything, and some of them succumbed to a wave of violence meant to wipe out their power - an unthinkable alternative to someone with his upbringing).
@charminbaer2323

Exactly. Michael and his father never wanted him to be part of the family business, but when they tried to kill his father, and then later his older brother was killed, he realized he had no other choice. Fredo was next in line but he was always a dimwit and could never save the family. There's more I want to say, but these ladies will have to watch the other 2 movies to get a better understanding.

It was my senior year in high school and we couldn't wait for it to come out in the theater. We'd all read the book which added to the anticipation and we weren't disappointed as the movie followed it very closely, though without a couple of the subplots. Some things, like Sonny's wife moving her hands at the table during the wedding, wouldn't be understandable to someone who hadn't read the book. Those who had read it laughed along with her. 😂 One scene that I wish they'd left in the film was the closing scene in the book. (Though it was shown at the end of NBC's 'The Godfather Saga' which was a compilation, in chronological order, of the first and second movies along with extra scenes.) Mama Corleone would go to church to pray and light a candle for the Godfather, and Kay did the same at the end of the novel. It was sad and touching scene. ❤

I always thought it was weird that people wanted to shelter kids from violence in movies. Here's why. I saw this in the theater when I was 11. After seeing all the horrible things that happened to all the criminals in this movie I remember making a conscious decision not to be part of that world, not to choose crime. This movie doesn't glorify violence. It's a cautionary tale against choosing that lifestyle.

@ernestitoe
@ernestitoe Жыл бұрын
@@sheriffbrackett7281 Interesting point. Part of the problem is that kids aren't taught how important correct spelling is; part is that no one seems to edit before posting; but also that in some parts of the United States, the respective pronunciations of "wandering" and "wondering" are almost indistinguishable. This seems to be the case -- as just one example -- in western Pennsylvania. I believe the idea that grammar is boring, that it is castor oil at best, is so ingrained hardly anyone will even consider that it can be made fun. In 1984, I read an article about a grade-school teacher who taught the little ones Latin grammar by assigning musical notes to parts of speech, noun cases, and conjugations, and the kids would sing their way through complex grammar. I haven't heard about anything like it since. Pity.

Carlo's cowardice saved his life. The book tells us that if Carlo had fought back when Sonny beat him, Sonny would have killed him. Unfortunately, Sonny's open hostility towards Carlo got him killed. Michael is smarter than Sonny. Also, when Tom goes to see Woltz, he sees a child coming out of one of the upstairs rooms in tears. That's part of the reason that Tom despises him, and 'gifts' him the head of his favourite horse. Originally, Sir Lawrence Olivier was supposed to play Don Corleone. Glad they went with Brando.

Lenny Montana who played Luca Brasi in this movie was actually an enforcer for the Columbo crime family in real life. People have commented a lot of facts about this film, but i haven't seen a few such as 1. Lenny montana (luca brasi) was actually a former mob associate. 2. Paramount didn't want Marlon Brando to play Vito Corleone. They didn't want to be in any Paramount productions movies until they saw his screen test. 3. James caan (Sonny) auditioned to be Michael, and Robert Deniro auditioned to be Sonny. 4. The horse head was a real horse head that production got from a dog food company. 5. "Leave the gun, take the cannoli" was an improvised line 6. Coppala had the main cast have family dinners while in character to prepare them for their roles. And last but not least 7. The word "mafia" is never mentioned in the film because the producer, Al Ruddy, received a threatening call from Joe Colombo, the head of one of the five most powerful Italian-American families in New York. Colombo demanded that the word "Mafia" be removed from the script, and Ruddy made the deal in 1971 to appease the mob boss. The film uses other terms to refer to organized crime, such as "the five families."

Back in 2020, Francis Ford Coppolla made a director's cut of Godfather 3 called Godfather Coda which he viewed an an improvement. So it'd probably be best to check that one out.

One of the many things that made it great was the subtlety. Many have to watch it more than once to catch the subtle little details and give aways. For example Natalie noticed how Sonny was kicked in the face after he was shot. If you go back you might catch how Sonny kicked Bruno the exact same way after the epic beat down. This was a deliberate detail which signaled that Bruno was working for someone else and set Sonny up. Another is the body language and subtle gestures between Tataglia and Barzini in the meeting of the five families which is How Don Corlenone figured out who his true enemy was all along.

After the meeting with the five families, Don Corleone told Tom Hagan that Tattaglia never could of out fought Santino (sonny)..that he didn't know until that day that it was Barzini all along. At the end of the movie Michael asked Carlo who approached him..was it Tattaglia or Barzini..Carlo answered.. it was Barzini. Then Michael had Carlo killed. It was Barzini who was behind the hit on sonny and Carlo was in on it.

That's a good representation of a hospital during that time. I remember when my Grandmother was dying, the hospital looked just like that. I refused to ever go to a hospital to the point that my appendix ruptured and I waited 5 days before I allowed them to take me. Hospitals had changed significantly by then. I still don't like them, but not like when I was a kid.

Have always said that this movie makes violence look like a ballet. My favorite scene is the cross-cutting during the baptism where Michael is "renouncing Satan. . .and all his wiles" at the same time he's having all his opponents wiped out. By the way, the "traitor" (Tessio) is Abe Vigoda who went on to portray Detective Fish, one of the funniest characters in the sit-com Barney Miller. Personal story: when I read the novel in high school in '69, I found a flaw in the story that even my dad missed. There is a hit pulled off on the Robert Moses Causeway, but that road didn't even exist in the fifties! Now you two need to watch The Freshman starring Matthew Broderick, a comedy where Brando reprises his Vito Corleone character (and an absolute scream of a movie--especially for Godfather/film fans).

thanks for your response. I guess stating how much you like Sonny and are a fan of him and prefer him gave me the wrong idea. Having seen the movie dozens of times I guess I can see how the Sonny character might provide comic relief and comfort to the first time viewer. By the way, you did point out some things I didn’t notice before, which says something. I guess a different generation and female eyes allow for that perspective. This is no doubt a guy movie.

Hospitals in that day were darker and quieter at night. Most places were, actually. No 24-hour Walmart. No 24-hour nothing. People worked during the day and went home to their families at night. Patients could actually get rest in those hospitals with no bright lights and people bothering them every two minutes to take their temperature, oxygen level, etc.

There was a TV show from the late 70s, early 80s called SCTV which sprung from the Second City comedy troupe, and the show was itself a parody of a television network. One of the best things they did (among many) was a take on "The Godfather" mixed with "The Andy Griffith Show". I will just say that it is hilarious. This is a top ten favorite of mine. Thanks for the reaction.

Directed by Coppola, all his immediate family are actors/directors. Sophia, Nicolas Cage, and Connie...is Rocky Balboa's wife! Coppola also did Apacalypse Now, and The Outsiders, chock packed full of future stars! Also in this series, Sonny's iligitimate son, with the woman he's screwing behind the door, plays a major role in 3! In part 2 the FBI agent is Harry Dean Stanton! He's been in every movie made since the silent era!😅😅😅. Outsiders, Red Dawn, Godfather 2, Dillinger, Green Mile, Alien, and others. RIP to him. The guy Carlo, is still alive and very well connected, and has avoided death, even in foreign countries, because of his Ties. He wrote 1 or 2 books, best sellers, about his businesses, casinos, mob ties, and various stories. He tells it point blank, who and why, killed JFK, RFK, and Monroe. And no one has tried to sue him from the Monroe estate or the Kennedys, because they know every word he said, is true! And they dont want him spilling his guts off, in open court! Type in here, carlo from godfather, tells mob stories! The hit on Sonny, they guy that designed the hit and all the exploding blood speefs, he said, he never put so many creepy ass blood spleefs on anyone ever before! A masterclass of comedy writing, movie was made in the 90s as a semi parody of this movie, well woth watching. Starring Vito, Clemenza from part 2, and Matthew Broderick called, The Freshman. Well worth watching! The movie guy's story is partially true. Frank Sinatra was a huge star in the 30s and 40s but wanted to break into acting, and in good parts but his star was fading. He and his crew started hanging out with huge mob people. They were known as The Rat Pack. Dean, Him, Peter, Sammy, and Joey. Suddenly frank gets parts in 2 of the biggest movies ever....From Here to Eternity and The Manchurian Candidate! Vito was better than Michael, because he was a family man first, before he was a boss. And this is one series, where part 2 is better than 1!!!

Sonny was good but he sure as shit would not have been able to save his family because he was more angry than agressive, the difference being he was emotional at everything. Michael on the other hand was a stronger character who didn't express much was much tougher to understand by an opponent, was ruthless and the right guy to protect his family, he was a rightful leader for his family. Sonny if alive would've been a weak leader, he was emotional and easy to read and would've been easy to plot his death cuz of his emotion, Micheal on the other hand was the reason why his family lived, he had to kill all those people be, a ruthless monster not cuz he liked it, he had to do it, a job/responsibility for his family to live. And lol if u don't like Michael I have no idea what you understood of Godfather, that transition from a guy who wanted to be unrelated to crime to him becoming a ruthless monster cuz he didn't have a choice is the whole point of the movie. I got some recommendations to watch for you: "Barbie" is coming out watch that movie you'll like the pink dresses and the fab looks😊.

I think the main themes in the Godfather story are laid out in that first scene with the undertaker. Italian immigrants have no political or legal power in the US, so they were vulnerable. The Mafia is sort of the government and law enforcement for some of them. The Godfather, being the boss of bosses, is the one the undertaker goes to for justice. Vito Corleone went into crime to provide for and protect his family. But since this power was founded in crime, what he created is rotting away, corrupt to the core. At the end Sonny is dead, Michael is a criminal, and he's even lying to his wife's face now. Shakespearean tragedy all around.
