Firing on BBF is the same as a vintage Chevy SB and BB, except FORD numbers their cylinders differently, and the dist rotation is anti-clockwise on the FORD and CW on the Chevy. So, if you know your Chevy you can do BBF once you find #1 on the dist, just remember CCW rotation on the FORD dist! - Sandy the Old as dirt hot rodder

The 302 Ford can actually have 3 different firing orders depending on camshaft & which distributor & cap is used. That's right THREE .

I am trying to help a friend with what he says is a 289. Motor was a rebuild and put in his car. He tells me the firing order is different as they changed the cam. I know what was original and I know what the 302 ho uses Can you tell me the third way? I am pretty sure I can guess but any help would be great. Also can you tell me if a 302 cam would fit in a 289 block.

There are 2 possible firing orders for the ford small block. They are known as the 302 and the 351 firing orders and are based on which camshaft you are using. The 302 firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and the 351 order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Both will have counter-clockwise distributor rotation.

This seems to be the case with my 460 mild build too. Looking at the traditional cap and wire diagram, my number 1 is where the number 7 shows. JM's diagram pictured is how my is.

Melissa Peyton ohh woow sorry to hear that and depending on the year but 302 all the way in the back under the intake "not all the time" and for sure behind the starter ,so you will need to lift the car and look on the right side "passenger side" you might have to remove the starter so first make sure you disconnect the battery 👌

First make sure your piston #1 is at TDC "all the way up on compression cycle" then just install the distributor with the correct firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
