This video shows how to upgrade your alternator from the old style 2g to the newer (best) 3g alternator. The 3g alternator is considered the best alternator Ford has designed and can support up to 200amp charging. Be sure to upgrade the power wire as well.

I did the 3G conversion on my 1990 f150 5.0 but I risked it and got a Foxbody 3g alternator conversion kit off LMR website even the sales rep I spoke to didn’t even know if it was going to work and it bolted up perfectly I didn’t even have to disassemble and counter clock wise or nothing . Had it for 2 years not one problem

I am located in the California desert where temps can climb to 115. I went through some trial and error to find the correct cooling setup and the fan/radiator combo I ended with have lasted 2 years so far strong. Engine temps rarely climb over 200 on hottest day idling with a/c. Electric fans can be customizable to your temperature needs.

So is your alternator replacement considered a small frame or large frame 3g? It’s important I guess because a large may not fit with any amount of grinding and modification?? Really appreciate the videos, they are a huge help and time saver.
@TheFixTech
@TheFixTech 7 ай бұрын
I would consider this to be a medium size as the 200 amp is slightly larger but will still fit. You can also use the factory bracket off 94-96 trucks as they will support larger alternators without modification.

I'm trying it on a 1988 Bronco 302 and the alternator housing is too large for the bracket. The bolt holes don't line up. The bracket hits at the top. Maybe the later model brackets are different?

Hello, I just recently did this exact mod down to a T the same way you did on my 92 Bronco 5.0, and I’m getting a stinky smell from the alternator and it gets hot after only a few minutes of running. I’m not sure what the deal is but something certainly doesn’t seem kosher. I just wanted to pick your brain. All parts were bought via the links in the description.
@TheFixTech

Does it smell like something is burning? Check make sure nothing is touching the exhaust manifold. You can have the alternator checked at you local auto parts store, could possibly be a defective unit.

Great video. Will save me am lot of grief for sure. One question. Someone butchered up the wiring on my Bronco. Where do the wires run to that come off the plug with the yellow, green and white wires attached to the alternator?
@TheFixTech
@TheFixTech 8 ай бұрын
If upgrading to a new 3g alternator the white wire goes to the stater plug (single wire back of alternator) the yellow is to the fusible link, and the green is to the chassis wiring via a pigtail connection.

Would it be possible to use a 3g harness from a newer f150 or bronco?

Yes, the harness may need slight modification to the pigtail end as it may be different, but the power wire from alternator to starter solenoid will work just fine.

Im somehow still unclear on the alternator sizing. Is this the large case (with 8.25" spacing between bolt ears) or the small (7" spacing). I have a 460 in a 90 f350 with the small case setup and would like to upgrade to 130 amp. Not sure what alternator i need to buy.
@TeamWagy
@TeamWagy 8 ай бұрын
Could you just use a ring terminal and tie the stator connector to the positive stud on the alternator instead of running it down the harness?
@TheFixTech

In theory yes, I gave that a thought and saw others do it that way, I chose to keep it similar to the original design.

@@TheFixTech okay cool I was going to order another 2G for my 94 4.9 but I’m going with 3G. It appears that I have the bracket on my truck to mount the 12 and 6 o clock mounting alternator which is 130 amp so I ordered that.

This exact alternator will work for an 86 efi 5.0 bronco? I’m about to upgrade to an aluminum radiator with electric fans. Are all the plugs exactly the same ? I guess what Im saying is, this is exactly what I need to order to do the swap in my 86 and change the pulley to the small notch pulley ??
@TheFixTech
@TheFixTech 8 ай бұрын
If your current alternator has the internal regulator then yes. Check your alternators wiring if it is the same as shown in the video. If not then you have a 1g alternator which can still be upgraded to the shown 3g but you will need a newer regulator.

@TheFixTech
@TheFixTech 3 ай бұрын
Is the belt brand new? A squeal is usually a sign of the tensioner/idler pulley going bad. If the alternator has a bigger pulley on than the original try swapping the pulley or use a slightly larger belt.
@texasranger5815
@texasranger5815 3 ай бұрын
@@TheFixTech belt is about a month old and I put a brand new pulley on when I replaced the alternator. (Mines a v belt setup, so some of the noise could be from the belts)

@@texasranger5815 On older worn components too tight of a belt adjustment will also cause a squeal; particularly on the water pump. I recommend installing a belt at a time checking for the squeal.

when I click on your posted link Amazon says it will not fit a 1988 XLT 5.8 which is basically the same Bronco you have. Is that because of the mod to the alternator mounting bracket? if you answered this sorry I missed it, I have installed Flexalight electric fans 20 years ago and they work great. With 70-75 amp alternator but stepped the idle up for SoCal ops when in traffic I just put in Neutral but would rather upgrade it. Flexalight was much easier than your Efan install. Did not have remove radiator, in my case you anchor fans to the frame and you can adjust the temp with a dial on the computer to whatever you want. Thanks nice post.

Got a ‘93 f150 with a 3G 95amp that’s on its way out. Do you happen to know if it’s a simple plug n play swapping to a 3G 120 amp? I’m sure I’ll have to modify the bracket to fit the larger 120amp, just not too knowledgeable about wiring, fuses, etc.
@TheFixTech
@TheFixTech 8 ай бұрын
I believe for your setup it is simply a plug and play, no modification needed for wiring or bracket. Certain OBS models have dual wiring with two parallel fusible links coming from the alternator charge wire. Check your wiring at the starter solenoid if that’s the case you are golden, if not it is still a thicker gauge than the 2g alternators and should be able to support 120amps. You can always upgrade the wire later on as it will not become a problem until you add more demanding electric power such as high amp stereo systems abs or lighting/electric fans, ect…
