Ford 351 V8 (LOUD EXHAUST)

My 1987 ford f150 xlt lariat 4x4 with a 351 V8 with dual glasspacks and turndown elbow pipes for sound and backpressure.

These engines sound so good. Not a good cylinder head design it saves gas but damn these were just low end torque monsters 300ftlbs of torque in the late 80s was unreal

Don't need any back-pressure man, its a myth that a 4 stroke engine needs back-pressure.

Jonathan Hogan No they enjoy the suction of exhaust out of the combustion chamber via prior pulses of exhaust flowing down into the pipes. aka scavenging.

@@jonathanhogan5263 No they don't. If you don't have enough compression that back pressure makes a positive difference in your motor, it's time for a rebuild. They do not need back pressure.

I’ve had a 2001 ford f150 with open headers and never had problems I was even told it was the healthiest sounding 4.6 the mechanic ever heard

They should've put the 351 in the Shelby mustang in the 80s with the style of fuel injection of the 302 in the mustang gt

I miss my 87 and 89 302. 87 blew a head gasket and 89 caught fire. Would do this kind of stuff to both trucks

next is a thumper cam, upgraded heads, intake, carb, and long tube headers and you got a beast.

Can I do all of that without a cam? Cause i dont actually *need* more than 350hp but it the 351windsor in my 89 E250 can do a lot better than 200hp naturally aspirated

@BG OBGAI i just installed long tube headers from hooker on my 1990 f250 351w, stock height. it only rubbed a little on the driving shaft. i installed it then pull it the other with a strap to bend it a little. now its totally fine

You know if you decide to extend the pipes out the back all the way you can get more Bass. Think of it like a Trumpet VS. A Trombone. Longer Pipe=Deeper Sound..

85 Studios not true .... Take a Honda run just pipe about mid way ... Deep tone .. run the pipe to the rear bumper extremely high pitched ....

This is due to tuning frequency. It plays into the audio world quite a bit. Think of a subwoofer in a potted enclosure, the length and width of the port play a huge role in tuning the subwoofer to either hit high notes or low notes. Figure out how much exhaust gas (air) your engine moves, and play around with a pipe tuning calculator. Should be able to tune for whatever frequency you want by modifying the pipe width, length, bends, crossovers, etc. and remember. Straight back Dual tips always give more lope.

It might depend where you live. I have elbows coming straight out of my exhaust and it is way too loud from inside the cab. It sounds like a giant subwoofer at a steady hum or a drone sound at certain rpms. I want pipes ran out the back.
