Well done. The tensioners have a fail safe feature that physically limits the amount of non tension so as to avoid piston to valve issues with momentary lack of oil pressure.

Removing all 8 spark plugs will aid in the reduction of forces, including residual combustion chamber compressed gasses pressing down on the piston, and this can held reduce the hazard of bending valves. I'm glad you used metal tensioners as the plastic ones get weak and the spring gets weak and after 6-7 years of heat cycles and allow for super loose chains on start up and the loose chain on the driver's side will eventually bust the left side chain guide. The metal tensioners have that little ratcheting arm that presses up and keep the chains tight by keeping the tensioner arm pushed up tight in the absence of oil pressure. Great video.

Cool vid man! I did this for the first time a few years ago with stage 2 cams with all new components with success. I didn’t lock cams or crank I just made sure all pistons were below deck by inserting a rod in each cylinder to double check piston height, might not be common way but worked great and put my mind at ease. It’s definitely a nerve racking process for the first time especially adding aftermarket cams. I changed oil pump so i needed to prime and I turned over to prime whole system before starting as well. There is definitely a chance for chain to jump a tooth on startup without being primed and without you knowing.Thumbs up👍!

I asked someone who has done "about 20" of them about the longer bolt on the passenger side and he said that's on the pre-2000 models where the fixed guides used to have the aluminum spine. I didn't think to ask if that meant the 2000 up already came with it that way... that's what's coming to mind now. The one thing I've noticed with Lincoln Mercury Ford is there seems to be 3 grades of parts used. Decades ago people used to say, "That's a Lincoln engine" when they were being specific. So I asked a Ford guy what the difference was. He said in the foundry's they grade the engines and the Lincoln cars always get the best even if that same displacement engine was used elsewhere. But that didn't mean Ford was getting bottom of the barrel junk. It just meant it was getting something slightly different than Lincoln. But I asked him about those bolts because I would have ordered them if I thought they were going to be necessary. I guess I'll know when the guides arrive because you can see the difference.
@OmegaHellHound543Ай бұрын
11:20 you could also pull the fuel pump relay, that is a much easier thing to do if your engine is fully assembled. The crank sensors are on the bottom of the timing cover on these 4.6L engines, and like mine, it's pretty much blocked by the A/C compressor.

You can't just pull the pins, sometimes there will be slack opposite of the tensioner side on the chain( I meant that the chain touching the tensioner will be tight, but there may be "slack" on the opposite chain side if the cams are not in the correct time). If I remember right the LH camshaft sprocket is 12 o'clock and the RH at 11. There being slack opposite of the tensioner side means that timing is slightly off. Your method about removing the roller followers prior to messing with the chains was correct, good advice there. Also I think that cam holding tool you were using (T96T-6256-B) is only meant to be used on Windsor engines, I have a Romeo 4.6 2v and had to use (T92P-6256-A) and (T91P-6256-A). Would you suggest I remove the cam holding tool & turn the cam sprocket with a wrench slightly to get the chain to line up? I read a couple factory shop manuals..i don't have one for an 03 up but I know there's nothing in this job that's too different and I read a Haynes and then I had some questions. So I consulted people on a crown vic and Mercury Grand Marquis forum and I got probably 70 great answers. Some even provided pictures and write-ups with the pictures. But most of them said if I'd ever had a quiet 4.6 I'd had an anomaly lol. One guy swore it was rare to have a noisy one because his three were quiet. I've had 6 4.6's and one 92 Lincoln was just beginning to get a little noisy, a 96 MGM that was always noisy on every startup and I sold it because I didn't want to fix it ..there were other issues plus a super soft cloth seat with zero support.. I'd rather have cloth but on mercury it's not supportive. Anyway and this one that's intermittent. One guy in Fayetteville AR provided so much good information i decided I'd probably wait till it warms up because cold weather will seize my back and then moving any kind of way is difficult and painful. So I'm going to watch videos until then. 4 or 5 of the people on the forum said they don't lock the cams down. They just line them up and then do it and have never had an issue. But they all said at my low mileage there's no need to replace the chains because they do not stretch before 3 or 400,000 miles. I understand why shops would anyway... because they don't want any little possibilities and have to eat the labor. But the diy doesn't really need to worry about it. I'll pray about it until I do it. That will determine what I do. *Ok...none of those Ford people i asked replace the chains until major miles are on but these are older mercury Grand Marquis people. There's two things that stretches chains. No, 3. 1. High RPM, racing, running hard. 2. Variable valve timing. 3. Lack of maintenance. Oil maintenance, specifically. So if about 70 genuine Ford people tell me they don't replace those chains until at least 300,000 and some said 500,000 I'm not likely to replace them unless I can see or measure a big enough variance. The original chains were made by Morse and there's no chains sold... not even the one's sold by Ford that are as good as the originals and that's sadly the way new parts are today. So for myself I'll check it before I just chuck it. It's not a GM or Mopar.

I don't like the cast iron tensioners and the only reason is the ratcheting mechanism. It causes the guides to wear through in many cases, since tension can't let up. I do this every time I start my car after a oil change or if it has sat for any length of time.

What to do when cam rotates and have to put it back at top dead center? Putting the pistons at tdc is easy but the cam shaft is a little more difficult to get the actual tdc

I'll tell you what makes these jobs hard: When a bolt rounds off and is stuck, and having to deal with several of these because the knucklehead who worked on it the last time used Loctite on the critical fasteners because he didn't have a torque wrench and just "wanted to make sure".

I just did a valve job on my 03 f150 5.4 I just had the engine timed. All new tensioners guides chains and for some reason on the driver's side lower guide. The chain has some slack I don't know if that's normal.When I rotate the engine It has more tension, but then it still has slack at a certain point

What ended up happening. I just did a 4.6 2v and it's acting the same way. It becomes loose and tight all within a hand crank

Where did you get that cool beeping torques wrench. I have. 3/8 clicking torques wrench but haven’t used it and it’s lowest setting may exceed that required by the 13pound feet. Also thanks for the awesome and simple Video

Hello I would really appreciate your help. I set my crankshaft to TDC but forgot to check the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets and they are not at 11 and 12 O'clock where they should be and I've already taken my timing chains off. What should I do to correct my timing when I reassemble the timing components? I'm doing head gasket replacements as well if that helps in providing an explanation. I need to turn the crankshaft so that I know all piston are below deck, if possible or somehow make it safe to turn camshafts without damaging valves?
@RepairGeek4 жыл бұрын
Just pull everything apart and when you go to put the heads back on, set the crank to TDC and get the cam timing close with the heads off the motor. Once its close, bolt on the heads and time it like normal. You can always set the heads on, don't bolt them down and eyeball 11 and 12 o'clock. Then lock the cams down and continue with reassembly.
@LWilson4 жыл бұрын
@@RepairGeek Thank you so much. I might comment again if I have another question when I get back on the project. So just to make sure, once I have the heads removed I can safely turn the camshafts to around 11 and 12 o'clock ( i have the 5.4L 2v) with the rollers and valves as they are and then continue with reassembly as normal as long as my crankshaft is as TDC?

Ever seen a engine the 7 pieces of cam follower or rocker arms fell off just sat at the side of the cyl head on the driver side? Plus the part that holds down the camshaft at the rear( same side drver) all the bolts are at 1 inches out. The pass side all are intact except for the valve lash is too much. Now why this happen? ('02 4.6L explorer).first engine starts misfiring but i ignore this for a couple of wks then smokes thick black from exhaust then i lost oil pressure then that finally i have to drive the truck to a place about 55 miles loss a lot of pwr where i can repair it or look for whats causing this. So i remove the usual obstacles to get to t-cover and i found out that 3 elongated holes near the water pump on the pass side of the t-cover the oil was coming out( i just saw the engine all covered with engine oil). The upper guide of t-chain broke to pieces on the pass side. the tensioner chain guide the upper tip is been scrape by the t-chain on the driver side. But other than that i see no other damage. Which brings me to ?? That you think the 7 cam followers that came off and the frame of the half part that hold the cam all bolts are out 1 inch or loose this is on the driver side only not pass side. You think cyl 6,7,8 the valves maybe got bent? Or by luck its not?? Of the way its situatuated?

The reason for the tool for the crankshaft is necessary for most, is because its possible to rotate the engine while removing the crank pulley.

Have a Crown Vic 4.6 …Instead of using a cam holder or removing followers I used vise grips… hindsight is 2020… that being said when I reinstalled everything my passenger side chains is loose (along the guide)…should it be tight? Because I have read Ford engines rely in oil pressure for timing tension?? Any info helps thanks!

Question for you. Got a 4.6, was running but the rocker arms fall in the valve cover, so the gear on passenger side turn loose, how do I know were to put back the gear? Got new rocker arms and timing kit to install in it. Got the cam remove, scope the cylinder and everything looks ok. Thanks.
