Ford 5.4 Driver side Exhaust Manifold Replacement!

Man, I had my engine out last year and did pretty much a top end rebuild. New spark plug inserts lapped the valves, new oil pump. Timing chain kit. The whole 9 yards. I knew my manifolds needed replaced because I had a couple broken studs in the heads. Didn't replace them when I had the engine out and now kicking myself for it. If I start having trouble with it I'll probably pull it out. I've pulled many many many of these 4.6 and 5.4's. And I'm only 22 lol.

Thanks for sharing ! I'm having my 2000 Expedition done as we speak and the repair guy said the EGR tube and dip stick tube both needed to be replaced as well ! Rusted right out !

I just pulled both heads on my 02 Expedition and did plug inserts in all 8 cylinders. I even did a full timing chain set, gaskets ect. She’s like brand new but with stainless headers..😝

The more I watch videos on how to do this, the more willing I get to pay SOMEONE ELSE to do this one. Sometimes I gotta let those PIA jobs go to more capable hands, lol. With that said, I plan on having my local exhaust shop do this, and replace the entire exhaust system. Pricey, but I can't put a price on the time I miss out with my family, work, and loved ones, and my sanity, haha.

@@amidwestfamily112 my F150 adventure today- battery light is on. I have a good battery and just replaced the alternator......battery light is STILL on, haha. Glad I got that Multimeter last fall when I had another electrical issue, haha.

The driver side was harder for me mostly because the steering shaft seemed to always be in the way. Good luck!

Free All penitrent!!!!! Wire brush everything!!! Air gun asuch Off as possible. Then, a month before the job, apply some free all once a week. Between heat cycling and time it will eat away the rust.

​​@@amidwestfamily112 have 2000 5.4L that i bought catalytic converters were sawzalled off, the left side manifold was cut where it connects to the catalytic converter. right side still has the gasket where the converter connects to but i want to change it as well since ill be down there. any tips so i dont break the stud bolts? Very nervous on doing it myself any feedback would be appreciated!

If any of the bolts/studs are broken you will need to replace the manifold it will be warped from the heat and uneven torque.

That's the worst one possible.... I am not sure if you attacked it yet but, It'll make you wish you didn't. If you don't Jack the engine up, You'll have to pull the Y pipe and I believe they AC compressor, Of course the starter too. Took me a total of 10 hours and 2 days if I remember correctly

I wonder if taking off the side panel would give more access to the manifold.

It might help, the steering linkage is just in the way.

Driver side on the 2006 super duty is easy. I replaced it because of a leak about 18 months ago, and of course it's leaking again. I know I did that sh!t correct the first time. I even torqued the nuts down correctly and everything. Isn't there a fix for the warping manifolds yet??

The passenger side was easier for me. The driver side has the steering stem in the way. Yeah I got nothing for you, ford really messed up the 5.4 in my opinion. Thank you for watching!

I'm pretty sure mines been done but not torqued properly. All the studs are clean with only surface rust on the nuts. Ill find out tomorrow

You can try to torque them again, let us know how it works

Mine was the same way , it looks like someone did this job a year before I bought it , all the studs were loose and the gasket had all rotted away

What made you decide to replace the manifold rather than going to stainless shorty headers? I'm getting ready to do this job and seriously considering shorty headers. Is there some reason to avoid them?

At the time I decided to go back with the cast manifolds just because of the condition of the rest of the pickup. If your pickup is in decent shape (not alot of frame and or body rust) I would consider the stainless option. Good luck with your decision!

@@amidwestfamily112 thank you for the feedback. My 2010 F150 is the Harley Edition and in really good shape body, frame and interior wise. I just replaced both front brake caliper hoses as my RF caliper started locking up. Right now I'm getting an occasional tick from the passenger side manifold that lasts for about 30 seconds at start-up. It's related to ambient temperature right now. I also need to address a lower center blend door actuator and AC issue along with what I think is a grounding issue with the backup camera. At 93K miles I would give the truck a 9 out of 10 and have every intention of keeping it until one of us dies. I'm getting ready to retire so I'll have plenty of time to bring it to a 10 out of 10. I used $98 dollar stainless shorty headers off eBay and stainless hardware, no more replacing the manifolds every 2 years! I would never replace the manifolds with the same problematic cast iron junk that they used. Old cars cast iron manifolds used to last the lifetime of the car…so why can’t Ford build a decent manifold? They can, but they don’t want to because they would rather it fails so you buy a new one every few years.
