Just wanting to show that it is possible to install front seals updated wear sleeve without the tool. If you are a full time mechanic yes you should by the special tools but for home DIY this will work and save you lots of money. Loctite I used is sleeve retainer 640. It’s green but comes in a red bottle.

Thank you so much for that info-I’m at the same point in my rebuild process..What type of break in oil are you going to use?

@@robertneal3566 I used standard 15w-40 for 2000 miles then went back to 5w-40 full synthetic

So the sleeve doesn’t have to be all the way in against the lpop gear

Do I need to replace the housing cover O ring?

They come in some packages with new seal but not all. According to Ford it is reusable oring. I always replace but it’s up to you.

Did you have the cab off for the rebuild?

Unfortunately no. All out and back in cab on. It’s not horrible but sure is a lot easier with cab off

Did you pull the block and rebuild the bottom end too?

@@nathanhaight8392 pulled the block out and had it checked over. Was prepared for boring out and bearings but it checked out. No play in crank and crosshatching looked really good. Just flat honed deck. I do wish now I would have bored and decked. KDD heads are speced to put on decked block so you loose some compression on untouched block. I don’t notice the loss of power but it takes a second+ more on a cold startup.

Thanks for the reply, it's very good to hear it can be done without removing the cab. I have a broken lifter on my 2006 powerstroke and am planning to do a rebuild and upgrades but don't have the resources to pull the cab. Thanks again

No, it’s not strong enough and also the heat will turn it back to liquid so seal will move.

David Masch since I’m not getting a reply I’ll put this out there for others. Should be be careful and not beware. Sure it’s not fool proof like the $300 special tool. You can rent tool for cheap if you don’t mind waiting weeks or months. Go slow, take sleeve out of seal, lube well with the lock tight, gently get it started while keeping it even, then when tightening pulley on (during pushing sleeve on part) go back and forth on bolts to push sleeve on even. Not fool proof but I’ve done it twice without any issues.

@@BugmanVlogs ya we went slow as we were trying to get the truck back to the owner over the weekend, and we had the entire front clip off so we could see all angles. I actually purchased a used balancer from ebay and cut the outer ring off.. going to try the tap on installer and will video tape that as well

@@BugmanVlogs it actually seemed like the sleeve sheared the center from the outer surface. I video taped the whole thing so we could show everyone the actual install and not just explaining how to do it..

David Masch Very cool you got it on video. I only found 1 other that only explained it like me but he had the same problem I did which was not having a camera stand or partner to hold. I like the idea of cutting down another balancer to use if it’s something you do often enough. A buddy of mine owns a shop and did that. His idea was shave off 10lbs of weight to hold and save on tool he only uses like 3 times a year. Sorry you had problems. Sucks to mess up new parts.

No it’s one of those odd engineering ideas. It’s only there as a wear sleeve for the bearing seal to ride on. The idea is the rubber seal could eat into main crankshaft and ruin it. Although there was absolutely no wear on the old sleeve but I get the point lol.
