Pretty embarrassing but if it saves someone from making same mistake its worth it

One of those little round mirrors on a stick is a MUST for this job, makes it so easy to see when it’s lined up.

Yup. My pump is a little weird though. even with everything lined up, its difficult to get the allen wrench into the hole. I messed with it for 2 hours. Finally got it lined up enough. Something in my pump is a little out of spec, and the screw hole is just barely there.

Mistakes are the best way to learn. Although it sucks, thanks for sharing! I was worried your mistake was more about blowing up the engine. I'm relieved to see this mistake is easy to avoid!

Those Stanadyne pumps do not like anything impeding the shaft to turn. The shaft is designed to snap if it can't turn. So, if you don't tighten the three bolts that hold it to the gear adequately, you will be able to drive 17 miles before you snap the shaft and the engine stops working. Yes, I'm speaking from personal experience. I Loctite Blued the bolts in with the new pump. Then again, I also say the only people who don't make mistakes are the people who are sitting on their butts and doing nothing,.

Hahaha we have a lot in common! We farm, mess up, and I also have a Ford with the 7.3 in it. LOL She's a 1995 and was bought my my dad new. Been darn near as reliable as the 2 early '90's Dodge Cummins 5.9 12v's we also have. All trucks are stock. Slow and steady wins the race for us for longevity reasons. We all make mistakes I make some good ones daily. Being able to own up to them shows you have good character. 👍

@i disagree with the terms of service Fully agree! Older diesels can handle the either and even came with ether shot canisters. Engines 1985 and newer I never use it on them. If they wont fire from their grid heaters/coolant heater/ or glow plugs, she needs to be serviced. Ether locking is something I've seen more than once and can destroy and engine.

I subscribed because you seem to be honest and truly want to keep people from making mistake like we both have. I've been a diesel tech since 1982 and cut my eye teeth on Roosamaster/Stanadyne Pumps and you demonstrated they're not that complicated to work on, even without a Bacorac Pump Stand to check metering and flow. This technology is obsolete, but Cudos to you for helping so many others from making costly mistakes!👍

I know this is a little out of date. But in my 6.9L truck i believe i turned it up at least 3 flats and had had the same smoking problem. Then I put a K&N air filter on it with a homemade top plate to (just big enough to seal and hold the filter down) i believe it was made out of 1/8" plate steel. And now the lower 1/2 of the filter housing is just a splash guard. It cut my smoke in 1/2 b /c it has more air flow and less restriction. Also I never gave it full throttle under low rpm. I have since turboed my truck also with a k&n and now I only get a very light haze barley noticeable in the rear view mirror

Thanks for the video! I've got a truck with the same engine that I am about to turn up. Did you ever install the new pump and if so did you adjust the metering valve or governor etc. on your pump?
@machineryd27653 жыл бұрын
@ jason knight i found a whole other engine with recently rebuilt pump cheap. Left it where they set it probably up 1- 1/2 flats

My question is was that pump already turned up before you got into it.. i have not seen 3.5 flats smoke that bad?
@machineryd27655 ай бұрын
I don't think because it wouldn't smoke at all under full load in 5th gear but anything is possible
