Ford 8N Tractor

Short video of our 8N mowing the field with the 5 foot bush hog. The Bush Hog "Squealer" Mower was originally bought from Brooks Farm Equipment in Pleasant Gap, Pa. The sticker on the mower that says "Brooks Equipment" can never be replaced now. The dealership is gone. Not sure of the history of the 8N. I bought it from a Gentleman in the Milesburg, Pa area. The 8N is only used for Mowing a couple of small fields and is also used on displays. It is a very good starting tractor. I will do another video of just the 8N and it's operation later.

Kevin Benecke They were underpowered compared to today's stuff. Introduction of OHV engines was somewhat of an improvement in'53 and '54 with the Jubilee and NAA models, respectively.

I hope you have as much fun on your 9N as I do mine. I run a 5ft brushhog and boxblade and a 6.5 ft disc harrow. If you get to aggressive with the angle on the harrow the tractor will struggle.

Hey just so you know - if you need to change points and condenser , heres how remove distributor cap , there are two bolts holding the distributor on . Before removing you should mark where the rotor is pointing with a chisel , because you can get it 180 degrees off and you will break the bolt ears off when you tighten it down ! The distributor has a bar on the drive end and the round end is offset , this is why you must mark the rotor before removal ! It has only one way it can be installed ! Remove it then install new points and condenser and rotor if needed , then reinstall paying close attention to rotor alignment -it should slide in easily ! Unhook battery before work so as not to turn over the motor !

Love your video. I actually went and bought me a 8n forward for $1300 with the shredder machine is bulletproof only minor work so far it has made me a lot of money and lots of compliments easy to pull best tractor ever. I love them

we had a ford 8N on the farm in the 50s and 60s. good for light work. moving, pulling hay wagons, ploughing gardens. NOT good for heavy work. like ploughing big fields etc. When first total rebuilt the engine and ran it hard for a year. My uncle would plough with the john deere A pulling 3 14in bottom plough, I ran the ford with the 2- 14 mounted plough. this worked to get fields done faster but by the end of the year the engine was shot again. Another rebuild and only light work there after and it was good for that. the original exhaust ran under the foot board and that got way to hot so up pipe exhaust pipe convertion. buzzing from engine really got old on long running periods . The twin cylinder john deeres' were much more comfortable. Like your video.

The purpose of the overrunning clutch is to prevent the inertia of the mower from pushing the tractor if you push down the clutch. The pto is connected directly to the transmission. May fences have been damaged and people killed that did not use the overrunning clutch.

yeah, before I installed one on my tractor I nearly ended up in a pond. didn't realize I was so close due to the tall brush and I was backing up I pushed the clutch in and stomped on the brakes, I still moved about 15 ft before I stopped. the entire bush hog was hanging over the pond. I consider myself very fortunate about that one.

I plowed my first field with an 8 N and a 2-14 Dearborn plow at the age of 8. We mowed 25 acres of alfalfa with a sickle bar mower 4 to 5 times a year, mowed roadsides and waterways with a BMB 5 foot rotary mower. It had a manual disconnect on the PTO so you could raise it if you killed the engine. We also fed cattle with it in the winter. I wonder how many hours I spent on it.

You live in Pleasant Gap, PA? I used to live in Bellefonte, PA. I went to Bellefonte High School, home of the Bellefonte Red Raiders. I was born at the Hospital in State College. I currently live near Pittsburgh. But Bellefonte/State College are my stomping grounds. I was in the Boy Scouts with Troop 52 out of Walker Township. I spent many a summer up at 7 Mountains Scout Camp and was even on the maintenance crew when Ken Hearn was the camp ranger. Boy the memories I have. I used to love driving all over the dirt roads going down into Poe Valley and Poe Paddy. I loved to walk the old rail road bed through that abandoned tunnel in Poe Paddy. I used to enjoy hiding around the corner at the end where that pipe went the where the tunnel collapsed and scare people. Isn't it funny how small of a world it seems sometimes.

Your sector gear and pinion in your steering box might be worn bad. Usually the sector shaft bearing is bad too. I noticed your right front wheel darting from side to side pretty far while you held the wheel straight. Mine did the same thing until it broke and almost caused a roll over. Steering just spun didn't function.

+Love2boat92 I recommend 5'0 for an 8n. You might be able to get away with a 6 footer horsepower wise, but you might have to run big wide open throttle all the time.

A question, please. You mention an antisway bar installed on the left side of the 3 pt. hitch to eliminate sway. What is the bar called and where can I find one? I also have a Ford 8n. Thanks, Skip

+Charles Stein They are often called a "stabilizer bar" and can be purchased at stores like Tractor Supply between $20 and $35.

+Machi74005 keep in mind that is just for each of the 2 bars themselves and not the whole kit needed to properly attach stabilizer bars... there is also 2 angel-iron brackets needed that bolts to the under side of where the 2 bolts secure the rear fenders. Will also need the (2) 7/8" anchor pins which attach to the angle-iron brackets and are what the stabilizers bars pivot on. Ebay has the whole kit for approx 45.00 plus shipping costs.

The 8n's don't mind the 6ft hogs, but if you hit something the tractor will stall.

I noticed your bushog's tail wheel trails much more evenly than mine. I've a 1940 Ford 9N with a 5 foot bushog. For some reason, the tail wheel seems to lock at about a 45 degree angle when I get on a long stretch and the end result is a furrow. Any suggestions or ideas as to what I can do to get the tail while to trail evenly behind the bushog? Also, is the Top Link bar what I use to adjust the front and back pitch of the bushog? Thanks!

Not sure of what would be happening with it. This bush hog has a rear wheel that can be spun around endlessly when the mower is lifted up. Never bids at all. It has a grease fitting on it that I grease once every season.

busesdeerandsound100 Yeah, that sounds like mine too. Elevate the deck, let the wheel hang free from contact with the ground and it will spin without snagging or hanging, so I have no idea what the problem is. I thought maybe I might have snagged something that warped the shaft slightly, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

We have a similar hog, the back wheel would get stuck, so we took a bar to it and it spins freely.

I'd be willing to bet the tube that the shaft runs in is oblonged. Might need to pull it apart and put a bushing in it to tighten the shaft back up. Just a thought to look into!

I have a mf 35 much like yours. I bought it used and when i lift the arms it either goes all the way up or all the way down with or without a load it wont stop in the middle.am i doing something wrong or is something broken?

Jared Rosenberger there should be a lockable slide on your lever that you gotta find that sweet spot where it doesn’t go up or drown and lock the slide there.

It's set on "Float". Theres a small lever on the right (I believe) hand side under the seat. Flip it.

The one dad had did. Press both brakes and had a lock on right side. If I remember correctly.

They were front mount until 1950, from then on they were on the side

@@mccaslas no the 8n means 1948 as 9n is 39 and 2n42 but the 8ns only had side mount unless it came fron 39-48

I don't use a top link on bush hogging fields like this. Don't see a reason for it and it's easier on the tractor.
