I never heard of this channel until I watched the Pull-A-Part challenge but I've been a subscriber ever since. "A lot of content" is an understatement. This is a great channel concept where more than one creator gets to contribute. Genius.

Brings me to ford axles 101 tech school 1979. Our powertrain instructor showed us a pressed on locking collar versus a heated and dropped on locking collar. We could slide the pressed on off the shaft fairly easy but couldn't get the heated and dropped on one off without cutting it off like you did. He then asked us, "Which one would you trust on your vehicle?"

If you put the bearing in the oven at 350 till warm it will just slip on. You don’t take a chance messing anything up and you can still adjust if needed.

If you don't have a press, a piece of pipe 6" longer than the axle length and big enough for the axle to fit inside but the same size as the collar, put it all together and slide hammer it altogether it.

I don't have a press so I use a 3 foot long 2" diameter galvanized water pipe to install the bearing and the retainer. You have to be careful with a cutoff wheel not to damage the sealing surface of the axle.

you should be putting the bearing and retainer on dry, you go round a corner to fast and the axle will simply slide out.
@WesternReloader
@WesternReloader 3 жыл бұрын
Ford 9” is a bolt on axel. It cannot slide out. This is before the advent of axle retaining clip... you don’t need to open the diff, push axles in, remove clips to pull axles) you unbolt 4 14mm bolts and the flange can then allow axle to slide out
@Fixitvincent81
@Fixitvincent81 2 жыл бұрын
@@WesternReloader yes but the axle is hold in place just by the friction between the bearing and the retainer ring and the axle itself. The bearing then is hold in place by the 4 bolts you mentioned. The newer style c-clip in the differential hold actual axle itself. But then again I doubt this ever goes wrong. You would have to apply the same force on your axle as your workshop press does….while driving around the corner😁

Is this similar or applicable for D35 or 8.25? Cool how to by the way.
@jake-mv5oi
@jake-mv5oi 6 жыл бұрын
Nope. Both those axles use c-clips inside the diff to hold the axle shafts in place axially instead of the flange he used, and they have regular cylindrical roller bearings instead of the tapered style in the ford 9" style. You'll need a slide hammer type tool to beat the bearings out of the tube on the c8.25/d35.
@MrMoxes
@MrMoxes 6 жыл бұрын
Okay. I was not sure if there was an "outer" bearing that I was or was not aware of. I know about the bearing inside of the diff.
