Brilliant video Mark you’ve proved it’s poor belt quality . Let’s hope someone from ford has picked up on this after all the 1000s of engine’s they’ve had to replace at there own cost🙈

@@charlesCrotum365 , as far as I understand it, then the problem are highly based on the oil. Not using the exact specified oil, not doing the recommended oil changes or doing an lot of short trip driving, so the oil never gets hot and evaporates combusting residues, will all make the belt start to disintegrate.

As a matter of interest I have a late 2016 Focus 1.0 with 61,000 miles that has been serviced annually with the proper oil. I have just taken my the cam cover off to check the condition of the belt and it looks basically brand new. I have checked the inside face of the belt, in between the teeth (as shown in this video) using a mirror and my mechanic had a good look too. There was absolutely no wear on it. It seems to me that if you always use the correct oil, and change it regularly, the belt should last a long time.

Make your self a wood template of the casting with holes for bolts for future bmax`s

Never seen one of these engines before, and oil on the belt seems like a abomination to me. What’s wrong with a chain. Well done Mark for doing that job I certainly would not have done it.🇦🇺🇬🇧👍

Chain doesn't automatically fix the problem. They can have issues too like the R56 minis

Another way to keep the bolts in order, cut a peace of cardboard mark 1to 14 or the right number of bolts poke 14 hole then put the bolts in the right hole ,,,just an idea

Have got to say fair play to you Mark, many people would not even attempt this job due to its seriously over complicated design. Poorly designed engine and it's no wonder they have the nickname of EcoBoom when they are so hard to work on 👍

Looks like what you said , due to contaminated oil causes excessive belt wear , and if changed oil way before oil due date or mileage will cause less belt wear ?

They have a belt that will last in oil ,it’s called a chain .

I paid a shop to fix mine at 95k. Belt was was missing 15% of the teeth and a miracle it didnt jump time - oil pickup was fairly clogged too.. 😢 I have done a lot of extra oil changes on mine. I can only tie it to a leaking hpfp and extra dillution. I really thought my belt would be one of the less worn when i've serviced it very well, but no such luck here...

Great video!! But why do ford make there engines so difficult to work on these days ? You might not be old enough to remember the ford pinto engine 😉 but you could change the timing belt on a pinto at the side of the road in 10 minutes. Bring back the good old day's lol .

To True, my Cortina 1.6 pinto engine belt snapped, I got a lift home, came back with tools and a new belt and as you say replaced it at the side of the road. Can't see anyone in their right mind buying a second hand Ford with this engine in it.

Mark if i were you i wouldn't buy another ford with a ecoboost engine unless there is proof of the timing belt already done. Considering the amount of work and hours to replace the wet belt, take the oil pump apart to get it clean properly, etc.. looks like it's not worth dealing with these engines especially when the vehicle is a salvage title one.

Its a horrible job changing that belt but you will find shortcuts and it will be easier and quicker Mark in future belt changes.

Absolutely a very bad design. Wet belts are useless. Rubber in hot / cold / hot oil is a recipe for disaster. Citroen / DS / Peugeot all use this method. Rubber flakes off and blocks the oil ways. My son paid ( I did) £900 to change his belt. So much rubber in his oil. What’s wrong with using a chain? Great job Mark 👍👍

Big fuss about nothing, I did mine in 30 minutes with cable ties, screwdriver , bathroom sealant and used a stretchy universal cambelt. Simples! Seriously though, why the hell don't Ford just use a chain instead.

Apparently it’s the chemicals in the oil that breaks the rubber down . That’s why ford specifies a certain oil is only suitable for these engines. It says when you purchase the oil suitable for ford ecoboost engines.
