Today's Teardown is another first for the channel. A Ford 6.2L V8 found in 2011+ F250 and F350 Superduty and some F150's. Its been a while since we had a Ford engine and I ran across this engine just this week. Apparently, this failure is somewhat common but I would bet the level of destruction is not. Likely, most failures result in misfires and some valve train noise, and not a complete cylinder delete. If I owned these trucks I would look into replacing these parts with new before this happens.
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart located in the Saint Louis MO area. Part of our model is dismantling and selling parts from rare and niche market engines. I don't build or rebuild engines, we simply supply hard parts to those that do!
Want to see a particular engine torn down? I may have already done one! No really, check out my other videos for the engine you'd like to see! I've made over 60 other teardowns from a Cummins to an LS7, and from Rotary to Ram Ecodiesels. You can expect a new teardown every week!
Check them out here • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
As always I appreciate all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
What will I tear apart next week? Just wait and see!
-Eric

Trust me man, none of us are going to get tired of watching you tear engines down once a week. These are great videos that you can watch while playing a game or eating something and still get entertainment out of. By the way, any chance you could see if you could do a 1mz-fe that comes in cars like the 2002 lexus es 300. I know someone with that car and I have been wondering what the motor looks like inside.

Ford tech for going on 22 years now. These engines are great and we service some that are pushing over 400k and still running strong. They did happen to break valve springs every now and then though for whatever reason. If caught early they are super easy to replace. If you ignore the misfire this is your fate 🤣

I work for a government fleet and we have a ton of 6.2 f250s and I have only ever seen 1 break a valve spring (and it was an early 6.2), but we replaced it and truck is still on the road today. These engines are awesome. At 90k-100k they need spark plugs and coils, and the exhaust manifolds crack and cause a small exhaust tick on start up, but those are the only problems I've ever seen with one. None are hard fixes, maybe the valve spring is a bit more involved, but not a common occurrence. Thanks for another awesome video!
@stevejohnson5837

Those 6.2’s are good engines. As mentioned, there were some broken valve spring issues, but they can usually be fixed without causing any other damage. As shown, the spark plugs come right out, the exhaust manifold studs don’t break, the rocker arms don’t fail, and the timing chains and phasers don’t fail. They’re about as good and reliable as you can get. Talk about simple and durable - two valves per cylinder, crank driven oil pump (not a variable displacement oil pump), port fuel injection, no turbos, six bolt main caps and piston oil cooling jets. The condition of the bearings on this teardown show how durable the bottom end of these engines are. Had the valve not dropped due to the broken spring, it would still be running just fine. Need to change spark plugs? Remove the coils/spark plug wires and take them out. Water pump leaking? Remove the fan clutch and take off four bolts. Easy peasy. Need to replace that broken valve spring before it blows up the engine like in this video? Remove valve cover, unbolt the rocker shaft assembly and replace the spring. It's basically a Ford version of a Chrysler hemi, except with overhead cams. Ever see the transmission that they put behind that engine in 11-16MY F-250/F-350's and 17-19MY F-350's? It's the same six speed that used behind the 6.7L diesel. Talk about overkill for this engine - you'll never wear it out. Buy one!!! The 17-22MY F-250 6.2's got a lighter duty six speed - not as bulletproof as the other six speed, but it's still good.

Got a lot of work trucks with this engine and we run the piss out of them and they still start up everyday. It’s fun towing a 12,000 lbs skid steer with it while the truck is loaded up with 3,000 lbs of equipment too, it’ll sit at red line trying to get to 75 and have to downshift like 2 gears just to gain 1mph while using cruise control at that speed.

At the Ford dealer I work out, we often see failed coil wires/coil boots causing external arcing to the fuel rail which causes misfires or sensor DTCs. Broken Valve Spring issues but as you said are USUALLY fixed with just a new spring, keepers, and hat. Other than those two issues we see often, it’s very rare to see a different issue.

I have a neighbor that is a fleet manager for one of the drilling and oilfield service companies. He likes these motors. They have had some broken valve springs but the damage on this one is from ignoring th e rattle and odd misfire. He sees Ram cam failures and lifter and cam failures on GM trucks that cost him more money.

Really nice engine architecture here. Massively canted valves, gorgeous valve/port angles, generous ports, simple valvetrain, external water pump, piston squiters, cross bolted main caps, shallow lightweight pistons. . .good looking engine, barring the valve spring failure.

Wow, that's a pretty substantially sized engine (physical dimensions). I've heard the ford 7.3 gasser is physically smaller, being pushrod and all - yet more displacement. Very neat, and never tiring!
@Prestiged_peck
@Prestiged_peck 2 жыл бұрын
The 7.3 bottom end is actually usable in the 6.2 block if you're fine with a HEFTY overbore, or you can use 6.2 pistons on a 7.3 crank and rod combo. Same bore spacing, main Cap size, and deck height (I think) just one has pushrods and the other doesn't, the 6.2 heads are big because they were made to be able to flow MASSIVE amounts of air with porting. Also the 6.2 architecture can be taken out to a little over 460 cubes with a big bore casting.

Pushrod V8's are usually physically smaller than their OHC counterparts. The ironic part is that Ford engineers admitted that they decided to make the 7.3 Godzilla a pushrod design because it would be more fuel efficient than an OHC V8 for the application. Pushrod V8's have slightly lower parasitic losses and better BSFC at towing engine speeds.

Hey, thanks for doing the 6.2. I am one of the ones that requested it. My friend has a Raptor with the 6.2. He had a spring break, but was lucky enough to have it stay together. A few weeks after getting that spring replaced, one of the rocker arms broke in half. Now he's had all of the rockers, shafts, and springs replaced. I wanted him to see what makes that thing tick. It is a fairly simple engine, but with the blower on hgis, and the position partially under the cowl, it's a PITA to get apart. Just getting to all 16 spark plugs isn't fun. Thanks again!

The 5.4L is actually a pretty decent long lasting engine if you get it fixed when the timing components start to fail. People tend to ignore the phaser knock and timing chain rattle till it gets so bad they become undrivable or just completely grenade. The oil pump in the 5.4 is anemic at best and the gaskets blow on the tensioners. Now you're starving the VCT units of oil which they need to function. It's all downhill from there. When I repair them they get a higher volume oil pump and I upgrade the tensioners to the older metal body tensioners with the locking mechanism. That way there's no gasket to blow out, and if for some reason you lose oil pressure momentarily the tensioners can't back off and allow the chains to slap and break any of the guides.
@CaptainSpadaro

@@CaptainSpadaro Yes, they are still available. They belong to the first generation Triton engines. If you order tensioners for a 97-99 F150 they will be the steel bodied ratcheting style. I think they may have gone even longer than that but basically any first generation triton engine used them.

Going to disagree about the 5.4 3v being dependable. Only if you know for sure that the timing components got replaced and used the proper parts to do it. Otherwise you'll be replacing all those component right after purchase. That's not worth it. I own one by the way.

@@psommers7646 Mine is a white/brown 11 with 180K. The Ford dealer I brought it to for state inspection said you made the best choice. They have fleet 6.2s (250/350) with 500K, just maintenance and minor things. Those trucks are far from babied either. One guy uses it to pull huge tree logs on the ground offroad every day. Tech told me he personally would not own an ecoboost. He said it is probably 50X more likely to fail or have issues than a 6.2L, and that still makes it somewhat reliable.

It'd be cool to see a teardown on a Volvo 2.4i engine, they tend to fail a lot from overheating because a lot of the cars they came it did not have coolant level sensors, so people will neglect the coolant hoses and never know when one has failed.

@09corvettezr1

@@JayKayKay7 I believe you are mistaking this engine with 3 valve variants of the 5.4 and the 4.6. The early version of those heads from 2004 through 2007 use a unique spark plug designed for those heads, which is very prone to breaking off in the head, which lead to a redesign of both the plug and head for the 2008 model year lasting the remainder of the 3 valve's production run until 2010. The 5.0 Coyote replaced both of them in 2011.

All of those plugs are factory. You can tell by the white and yellow paint on the tip. White has extra RF suppression because they go right next to the injectors and yellow have a different heat range and go next to the exhaust ports. They're the original plugs. But, at least they're 'normal' plugs and hold into the head with full thread engagement. I'd love to have that engine in my old '85 2wd ranger. It'd probably stick out the hood a bit though. (and drag on the ground . . . and rub the tires, what a monster of an engine)
@stevejohnson5837
@stevejohnson5837 2 жыл бұрын
You're right that those were the factory spark plugs, as noted by the paint marks. However, the differences are in the platinum tips, not the suppression. They are only single platinum spark plugs - one has platinum on the electrode side and one has platinum on the ground side. It matches the direction of current flow from the coil, through the spark plug, through the engine block, back through the other spark plug and returning to the coil. It's a cheaper option to get the high durability and low wear characteristics versus using double platinum spark plugs. If you look up the replacement spark plugs, they specify the same part number regardless of location.

It’s beyond sad when a well maintained, and otherwise well designed, engine with lots of life left in it is basically destroyed by a substandard cheap part. My guess is Ford went with the low bid when buying the valve springs. Just like rocker arms falling off, and dropped valve seats, on Dodge V8’s this shouldn’t happen at least not until the rest of the engine is ready for the scrap heap.

It's too big to fit in a Mustang well. The 7.3 is better and has more performance parts. There's not too many performance options for the 6.2 and I haven't seen any crazy hp numbers unlike the 7.3 which will handle 1000hp. There's a few companies that sell a fully built 6.2 and they are less hp and more expensive than a built coyote.

I have close to 140,000 and 13 years on my Ford 6.2. My concern has always been the valve springs but I got tired of losing sleep over the valve springs failing. I see videos of failed springs and the most common thing I see is most owners never changed the oil. Also, the chain guides get brittle after the oil gets acidic from not changing it. So far these engines seem great as long as they are babied.
