Here’s one I had never heard of: bought a salvage yard Toyota 3.5 V6 which turned over beautifully by hand at the yard. Brought it home, replaced all the usual parts to freshen it up, figured I had better just make sure it still turns over before installation. Much to my alarm, it locked up hard in each direction after about 270 degrees of rotation. Pulled the heads and found one cylinder with a bit more carbon than the others. The process of using air tools during assembly vibrated loose the carbon, which then collected on one edge of the piston and prevented it from going up to tdc. Cleaned it up, closed it up and it’s still going strong 10 yrs later.
@Wtrxprs007able2 жыл бұрын
I felt my heart drop when you said it locked up in both directions. I probably wouldve started panicking "wtf is going on here" after spending all that money. At least you managed to find the problem and sort it!

The problem is the 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions. They are notorious for overheating. The torque converter is absolutely junk from the factory OEM. Billet cover and piston is a must. Also the thermostat in the transmission needs to be changed from the factory 200 degree one to a 140 degree. It costs about $900 for a good torque converter for those transmissions and about another $700 to have it installed. If you have over 60k miles on the transmission already, it's probably too late. To bad the torque converters were junk from the factory.
@billiew.995112 күн бұрын
@@Steven-gv1ke Interesting comment? I'm not a Mechanic, can you elaborate on "Billet Cover and Piston? What brand torque converter should I be looking at? The reason I ask is, my 2008 Chevy 2500HD 2WD with 6.0 and the 6l90 has 333,109 miles on her. Tranny has never over heated, had it up to 195-200 a couple times in stop n go traffic in the summer, thats about it. She runs great still, but I'm trying to be pro active and shop around to have the engine and tranny rebuilt. I bought the truck with 42,000 mi on it, immediately changed all fluids and since have done 6k oil change interval with Mobile1 serviced the tranny yearly regardless of mileage. Any tips would be greatly appreciated...

While I may not know exactly when I'll pull the trigger on buying the LS that will be the basis for that little monster, I *do* know that I'll be buying it from you. I've seen enough of your videos to know that you care about your business and your customers enough to make sure that you're not selling anybody a load of hot garbage, and as an honest mechanic, I appreciate that about you. It doesn't matter how many parts are in the engine. As long as you have technical manuals available and a methodical approach they can all be successfully torn down and rebuilt properly. That sums up my complains with ALL OBD-II engines. I've NEVER driven one that wasn't a fussy li'l shit. Some are worse than others, but they're all orders of magnitude fussier than the old iron was, which would still attempt to run if it had at least one cylinder with more than 50 pounds of compression, a spark vaguely within the right zip code, and an air-fuel mixture that was at least sufficiently flammable that OSHA would forbid smoking near it.
