Welcome to Garage Denali! In this video, I talk walk through the DIY process on how to retrofit steering wheel volume controls into your Ford Crown Victoria. This retrofit works if you are looking to add more functionality to your Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis.
Parts:
Left side controls: 5W1Z-9C888-AA
Right side controls: 5W1Z-9C888-BA
Harness: 7W1Z-13B319-AA

Thanks for the video. After watching your video I decided to retrofit my 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. As you stated in the video the release for the airbag can be tricky. Everytime I thought I had it one corner or side would pop back in. Once the airbag was removed the rest of the retrofit went quickly. I did have to use a puller to get the steering wheel to come off. Once the wheel was removed I took it to my workbench and swapped the control buttons and wire harness after removing the back cover. I put the steering wheel bolt in to check if the threads were damaged and they were. I cleaned the first few threads with a 10mm X 1.5 tap. Much better. Reassembly was very easy. Since I have the original AM/FM/CD/CASSETTE the controls work perfectly. The electronic climate control buttons also work perfectly for increasing/decreasing the temp. The cruise control moved from the right to the left on my steering wheel. It works of course perfectly. I would recommend this retrofit to anyone. I think it much safer to use the steering wheel controls since the controls on the dash are so far away. Thanks again for the inspiration.

OH MY GOD I OVE THIS, bro I literally just spent 3 hours looking at radios and decided on this sony and was anticipating no steering controls to be a pain in the ass. I was like there's no way an OEM solution exi....BOOM lmao. thanks a ton!

I have a similar Sony unit in my explorer. It’s not as sunk in as yours but I just use the remote to adjust volume and such.

OUTSTANDING!! Does anyone know if the "FORD" airbag will fit the Mercury and/or Lincoln steering wheel? In addition to adding these radio/CC/HVAC buttons, I'd like to swap to a wood grain & leather steering wheel. .....and you still use too much Loctite, LOL.... excellent info though!

I just did this to my 07 Grand Marquis after watching the video. I used a wheel from a Lincoln Town Car. Super easy. The wiring harness is almost impossible to find, but I found one at the junkyard. Cruise is working, but need to get the radio buttons working, but that's what Tech Support is for. Outstanding video, great upgrade to my car.

I got the radio buttons to work by adding a wire to the clock spring connector and running it to the head unit connector.

@@encinobalboa Can I verify the steps you took? 1. Install wiring harness and steering wheel buttons 2. Plug Maestro connector onto aftermarket radio and run wire to clock spring connector

Question, I have cvpi, and I just bought a wheel, but it came with the full set of buttons. Is the wiring completely different, or will just cruise work if I put it in? PS it came with the buttons and wiring harness you were trying to add

Hey, when I was a kid we didn't even have power steering. The break and the clutch pedals were like those exercise machines in gyms. There was no radio you had to sing really loud over the engine noise. And I had to drive uphill both ways to school in the snow without snow tires. ,(Her hee)

Hello, I have a 2011 CV interceptor but it does not have cruise control on the steering wheel. I can see the cruise control icon on the dashbored though. What does it take to add cruise control to this car? Is it pre-wired for that and just swap the wheel with one with cruise? Please advise!

You would need a wheel and would need to have your pcm reprogrmed to activate CC. Dealer charges around $120-$160 to activate it.

So did it ever work with that head unit? I have the exact same Sony head unit in my Vic and experience the same frustration you had with the volume knob.

I never got it working with the Sony head unit I had in this car. I got the steering wheel volume controls from Crutchfield.com (the Axxess brand) to be exact. Crutchfield is great because they have support 7 days a week. After speaking with a technician on the phone, I got the following pieces of info: There is a plug behind the steering wheel, around the 7:00 position. You have to remove the bottom cover to access it. This plug powers the steering wheel buttons. In the plug, pin 5 in the pigtail is where a wire would be on cars that have factory volume controls. Pin 6 (I believe) is for temperature controls if the car had EATC. Gray with red stripe from Axxess connector needs to go into Pin 5. You would need 5' of wire to run from the pigtail behind the steering wheel to the Axxess steering wheel volume controls kit that lives behind the head unit. Red accessory from Axxess goes into Red Sony harness wire (Tap this in) Black ground from Axxess goes into Black Sony harness wire (Tap this in) The controls should work once this is done since essentially you are retrofitting a wire that higher-trim cars already have

No problem. I haven't done the work to confirm but the tech support person told me that if that connection is made, it should work. You might need to source some parts such as a pigtail from a car with more options or find a way to insert the pin into hole #5, but as long as the wires are there, it should work. Essentially, you are running a wire from the pigtail behind the steering wheel to the head unit harness if I am not mistaken

Garage Denali yea that’s what it sounds like. It seems pretty straight forward one you get the correct harness put in.

@@garagedenali you're going to finish this yourself, right? Please tell us you still have this car and still intend on finishing, lol. I found it ironic that I got another Crown Victoria myself recently, and selected a Sony unit just like this one for my aftermarket replacement (I want the 210). All of that, then this video showcasing the steering wheel volume controls, can't be a coincidence. Lol. Thanks for the videos, very, very helpful!
