100% on the strut issue. I had that happen on the passenger side of a 2011. When removed, you could see the upper perch pished out causing the spring to make that "gong" noise while turning left and right while parked.

Tested it out and my strut purge is the issue. How urgent is that repair? Car seems to drive fine other than the clunking.

Any ideas on why my 2011 AWD sounds like a diesel when touching gas? PTU going bad?

Hello do you need to replace the whole strut assembly or just the strut mounting?? On my edge it’s the passenger side the failing one

We have a 2017 edge that we bought recently that has about 10.3k miles on it; it didn’t get driven during the pandemic before we bought it. When backing at very low speeds, there is a massive thunk that sounds like we backed into something, but no mechanic has heard the noise. It is almost guaranteed if the car is cold , but doesn’t seem to happen if backing quickly or everything is warmed up from driving at least 20 minutes. Any idea?
@BeirutPapa Жыл бұрын
Possibly the PTU. The bearings will go out quickly if not serviced frequently. It manages the power to the back wheels and will give the sensation that something is wrong with the back end when the idler gear starts eating rod bearings that fall loose... It'll get worse. It's a big job and expensive if you take it in for a shop to look at. New PTUs are about $2k and after market can be as cheap as $700. You gotta remove the passenger side wheel, brake assembly, CV shaft, steering knuckle, rear cat, and propshaft to get to it...... This problem is usually a 2007 to 2013 problem so it may just be rear wheel bearings for ya.. either way, two good places to check first...

Can you just have the dealership replace the top strut mount or do you have to replace the entire assembly?

Came across this video just now. I own a Volvo but I am hearing clunking noise going over bumps rough roads.. replaced both front struts (Complete assembly) and also did sway bar links. Still have this noise.. any thoughts on what else it could ?

@@addismultitasking3504 I brought 2 my mechanic who installed he said they sound like sway bar links.. bringing car in Wednesday to get checked out.. but I also brought it to an alignment shop after installing and they checked everything said everything looked nice n tight nothing seemed off! They think could be defective strut because it’s coming from both sides. Very frustrating

I have a popping noise and changed everything! Now I noticed that yellow ball on your strut is up top? On my wife's hers is at the bottom like it fell thru that boot and is now at the bottom or middle. Should that be like that or should that yellow purge be up top and not bottom?
@addismultitasking35043 жыл бұрын
It should be at the top
@brandonsmith56923 жыл бұрын
Hmm. It's not lol. It's like it's stuck In the middle.
@addismultitasking35043 жыл бұрын
It should be sticking out of the top housing by about 1 inch

Yea I checked ford website it shows the bumper on the bottom of the boot so I'm really confused lol. Wish you had an email so I could send pictures of the stupid thing. But I'll go check tomorrow but I swore the yellow boot is at the bottom and the bellow is just flopping around. I'll try to run it up thru the housing middle it feels stuck to me.

This video is awesome by the way, thank you. I see you just posted this so I figured I'd ask. I have a 2011 ford edge and I have a clunking noise when I go over most speed bumps/pot holes etc. When I go slow and watch my speed how I go over the bump I can avoid the noise. When parked and I turn my wheel left and right, not completely left and right just quick left,right,left, right motions from the wheel being in center position it's clunk,clunk,clunk,clunk. I had my gf turn the wheel while I checked cause people told me it's the strut mount and my struts were just put in November 2019 and the issue doesn't seem to be there at all, my spring also seems to turn fine. It sounds like it's coming from directly behind my tire(stabilizer link like you say?) I chalked it up to being either the ball joint, or tie rod ends.(don't know.much about cars, but I fix whatever I can without getting killed financially at a shop) So I figured I'd replace the whole lower control arm which would give me a new ball joint, and then I'd fix the tie rod ends. But do you think this may be the stabilizer link like you said in the video? I can be parked and hear the knock noise by turning my wheel (like I said above), and getting that clunk noise going over bumps. Also figured I'd mention it also looks like my tire vibrates in unison with the clunk/knock noise when I'm parked and turning the wheel to produce the noise. The weird thing is because I get the same noise going straight over bumps/speed bumps without turning my steering wheel left or right which is why I'm also leaning towards the link. And after watching this video, I'm thinking the stabilizer link could be it. And if i could replace the stabilizer link instead of replacing my whole lower control arm, and tie rod ends( shop just fixed tie rods 14 months ago too). I don't wanna end up replacing those and still hearing the knock/clunk noise. That would kill me lol. I know this is super long, but trying to be detailed and wondering your opinion on the matter. And if it indeed is the stabilizer link, how do I pinpoint it to know that's exactly what I need to fix.
@addismultitasking35043 жыл бұрын
when I hear noises with these vehicles that front end clunk I usually start with the stabilizer link cuz it's usually the cheapest to replace but you can pull it off and you should be able to pull on the stud end of it and make sure that it is tight and it's not moving. Once you take the stabilizer link off hold in one hand and pull on the threaded stud with the other back and forth and there should be no play and no slop if there is that's probably what's causing it
@addismultitasking35043 жыл бұрын
I've never really noticed ball joints to be a problem in these vehicles..
@32232233 жыл бұрын
Ok I'm gonna give that a shot, thank you!! I appreciate it! Yeah, I'm right around 172k atm. I bought it at 116k so I have no idea if the previous owner ever replaced the ball joints. But hey if that's not the problem I'm not fixing it lol. I'm gonna try that with the stabilizer link. Quick question. Is a stabilizer link and sway bar link the same thing?
@addismultitasking35043 жыл бұрын
Some people probably call it the same thing.. it could be bad bushings in your sway bar as well..but I would bet those stabilizer links are going to be real sloppy when you pull them off

2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD - this may be my issue, but the noise i get sounds more like a mechanical noise with a little grind. maybe im using the wrong word to describe it... its really annoying! ... it happens when i turn and moving straight at a very low speed . not over potholes or driving at a higher speed. well, not that im aware of .. please help?
@addismultitasking35042 жыл бұрын
Could be lower ball joints, but those go out on these at around 110k miles, stabilizer links are the most common problem. If you have a slight grind then it could be wheel bearings

It's probably your upper strut bearing is broke turn your wheel back and forth with your hand on the strut and you should feel the pop

Don't do it when I'm in park only over bumps. Now if I have my wheel all the way turned i mean parked and I turn it one way until I can't anymore and rock the wheel same side something is popping behind my sway bar and it's an edge so I can't see anything it's all blocked. But anyway I'll do what you said and see if I feel it. It's a 1 year old front strut from what I was told
