1954 Fords
"The long-lived Flathead V8 engine was replaced for 1954 by a 239 cubic inch overhead valve Y-block unit, marking the end of an era. This engine produced 130 hp (97 kW) with a 2-barrel carburetor. An impressive 160 hp (119 kW) 256 C.I. version with a Holley four-barrel was available in the official-use-only law enforcement model. The six-cylinder was up to 223 cu in (3.7 L) and now produced 115 hp.[8] Another new addition was the "Crestline Skyliner" 2-door hardtop, which featured an acrylic glass panel over the front half of the roof. Also added was the new "Astra-Dial Control panel" speedometer, which has a clear, plastic covering on the top, which let sunlight illuminate it in the day-time.[9] New power accessories included a four-way power front seat.[2] The "woody" Country Squire wagon now used artificial fiberglass panels but remained the most-expensive Ford.”

I never really understood the claim of reduced friction with short stroke. If you need a larger bore to equal the same displacement, there's more piston-to-bore surface area, which would seem to fight the gains from shorter stroke.

Probably mostly marketing is my guess. Love your reasoning on surface area. Kind of amazing to get 4 cylinder horsepower out of 8 cylinders too.

The problem with the shorter stroke was that the design of the Y Block engine block didn't allow it to go much farther in displacement than Ford took it. This was remedied with the Ford FE which was introduced in 1958. It also used the Y Block design, and went from 332 cubic inches all the way up to 428. Ford could have taken the FE much farther in displacement, but they chose to replace it with the 385 engine family in 1969.

Hi, my name is Vanderlei! What is the model of the original v8 engine of the 1953 customline car? Congratulations on the beautiful car.

Vanderlei Antunes Kakimoto not sure, but 53 was likely still a flathead, 54 was when they went to ohv, and it was probably a 272, and maybe 292 late in the model year. 1955 Thunderbird had 292, and possibly 312, 56 brought 332, and not sure on the year the 352 appeared.

@@Colt-tf6xf 239 cu. in. OHV Y- block in 1954. Strangely, The flat head it replaced from 1953 was also a 239 cu.in.

The 332 and 352 FE motors came out in 1958. As did the 361 Edsel motor. The 361 Edsel motor was refered to as the E-400.

Many of the 54 Ford engines are still going well beyond 100k miles today, the oil bath air cleaner should have been done away with sooner.
