And some aftermarket fabricating genius built a battery tray that has the crossways 67-68 style on top, but bolts up to the 65-66 holes underneath. Great video. FYI: Ford has a policy that when a connection to a body part is being used for an electrical connection, the Bold must be welded into the body/frame. I agree with that viewpoint to avoid dielectric grease before making the connection, and was surprised to see there is ongoing debate about that. Advocates for putting dielectric grease on before will say that water has a way of penetrating crevices, and once there it tends to stay and dissolve salts to start galvanic reactions. Then crusty salts tend to draw in moisture by osmotic effects. They'll say that the physical contact of clean threads together reliably push grease out of the way to always get a good connection. There's no doubt that the grease will fill those void crevices much more completely if it's put on before. So I guess I can understand their point of view, corrosion can start deep inside and works its way out.

Eric O, this is a perfect example of why we need to test batteries in our bays so our customers don't go through what you did. I've seen too many shops that don’t feel the need to test customers' batteries when they come in for service. They all want a battery consignment in their shop for when a customer comes in with a dead battery, but the majority of the batteries on their consignment expire or end up sitting there collecting dust. Those who do not understand battery terminals would just cut off the end and put one of those quick-fix battery connectors. Some shops don’t realize that some manufacturers no longer place the battery underneath the hood. Now, it takes time to replace the battery and may require charging the customer accordingly, as well as possible resets with a scan tool, depending on the manufacturer. According to Interstate, AutoZone is starting to pose a threat to independent garages when it comes to battery sales.

Some Lincolns then used a group 30H battery and part of the battery was under the left front fender and required a special tool, a non conductive cable with a circular metal ends to loop over the terminals then lift and pull it up, angle it, and pull out, probably did 1 or 2 per week back then. That m-fer was over 50 pounds but I was younger 60 years ago and it was no problem for me then. And, as I was under age, I did this for $1 per hour when minimum wage was $1.25. This video brings back memories, it reminds me of Ford engineering, placing a battery in the most difficult place to replace it. Then again, my '93 Chevy Lumina had the battery under the washer fluid tank, an equally distasteful place. Just one comment, did the customer buy the correct battery for this vehicle? That plastic battery tray or compartment looked a bit roomy for that battery, like maybe he bought an incorrect, smaller group size for that vehicle. It should have been a group size 96R from what I can determine. And, as always, Mr.O, a great video that brought back some memories for me.

@SouthMainAuto That piece of plastic you found in the battery tray is a spacer. The Ford Escape uses the same battery tray for 2015 - 2019. The Escape up to 2016 uses a group 96R battery. Starting in 2017 some Escapes come with Auto Start / Stop. The Escapes with the Auto Start Stop uses a Group H6 AGM battery and the non Auto Start Stop still uses a group 96R battery. These 2 batteries are different sizes. The Group H6 AGM battery size is 11" L x 6 15/16" W x 7 1/2" H. The Group 96R battery size is 9 1/4" L x 6 3/4" W x 6 15/16" H. So there are 2 spacers you need to remove to fit the Group H6 AGM battery into the same battery tray. I hope I did not make this to confusing for everyone.

I have a 2016 Escape with an aging battery. Very good information today. The only thing that would make it better would be a cameo by Mrs. O. Thanks Eric.

You can put dielectric between electrical mating surfaces without causing issues as long as you have good clamping pressure. The surfaces will squeeze out the dielectric where they make microscopic contact. And where the surfaces don't make contact including at the edges the dielectric will protect against corrosion. For connectors with pins where the clamping pressure on the pins isn't as much as say a battery terminal cable, any loose (fretted) connection can be a problem if dielectric is applied.

This is my thoughts as well. I spend more time with the grease on the sealing gaskets on connectors now, rather than the pins themselves.

I would love to get the story of the 1st mechanic and what he did to the engineer, which makes them hate us so much. Great job as usual. Stay safe and God bless

I have done this a few times on a 2013 Eco bust. Once fixing the between the engine and firewall coolant line leak. And another doing struts.

Thanks Eric. Love your sense of humor. Once again great engineering FORD. Don’t even think about the kid at Advance does this job. Enjoy your evening.

I learned something today. About wipers of all things. I probably would have figured it out though. I tend to try and move the arms after installation just to make sure I got them seated on the shaft correctly.

This isn't related to this video but, I need to thank you for teaching the basics. Help me figure out a problem I had with my 2010 T&C. Still have one issue to work out with not comm to the anti-lock brakes. Will use your methodology and hopefully get it done.

I despise how in-the-way the cowl is on 2010s era Fords, but I love how the wiper motors act independently of one another instead of being hooked up with a transmission. Easily one of my favorite parts of my 2018 FoST. Accessing the battery and the brake fluid reservoir on the other hand I have some pretty strong words over.

It's great seeing both ways to get to the battery. Thanks!

Good video on the battery replacement, it seems like the COWL method is the way to go. Great tip on wiper mounting I never knew. This really points out how lame the Engineering is at Ford or the last 10 years. I recently replaced the evaporator core on an 2016 Fusion, that required removing the whole dash and both front doors, from videos the Escape has the same design, I think the doors might be easier to take off than a Fusion. They should have the Ford Engineers try to repair the stuff they design to see how much extra work this stuff becomes from these designs. I suppose its all designed that way to force many to take it to the stealership for repair, THe dealer out here in AZ wanted $3500 to replace the evaporator core, I was able to do it but being just a backyard DIY I don't think I will do that one again. I'm really more in the Ford camp than GM, but I can see why you are more familar with GM's, another day another Chevrolet to pay your way and your sons way through college. I just signed up for a membership today to watch the 3.0 Fusion coil video, well worth the money looking forward to more future exclusive videos.

This is an inside argument at our shop and has been for 3 years. One guy will try and “all data says”, I stick with then why is the negative cable long enough for you to slide it out, and a third will come up With nonsense.

No matter how many times I've proven there is no need to remove paint from ground lugs...Dielectric grease, we used it by the bucket on board Navy vessels, just the way you are, coat everything then make the connections. Works good on watertight seals too. I use it on places where water can get into the car and flood electronics too, like bulkhead connectors and trim panels.

I have a 17 escape and when I had to change the battery, I tried to do it this way but couldn't get the wipers off. Did it the way you did it in the other video. Not that bad but nothing like it used to be.

I had a 2014 Escape, same design as this one. I found it MUCH easier to just pull the airbox and slide the battery out. You get a little more room by unbolting the brake fluid reservoir, if you feel like you need the room. Between the plastic clips and the wiper arms, I think there's a lot more potential for DIYers to damage something just because they don't have the feel for those parts.

Hey Eric! I too, use dielectric on my terminals. Keep the moisturizer out. My dad and I had a battery replacement three years ago. Wanna guess who's terminals need cleaning now? 😂

I recently changed the battery of my mother's 2014. I used this method, basically looking at the obstacles and removing them along the way without any experience or viewing tutorials anywhere. Removing wiper arms and all these cowls and covers is ridiculous planning by Ford but it is easy. Afterward, I did search KZbin to see if there are easier ways and also came across plenty of videos showing me the way I accidentally did it. I'm just not sure I will try the removal of the air filter box next or not.

I worked for several years as a technician at Ford dealerships. I've replaced hundreds of batteries in Ford vehicles. The Escape battery replacement isn't too bad. I've always done it by removing the air box not the cowl. Once you've done one it's not too bad. Takes about 15 minutes. I'd much rather do a battery replacement in an Escape over doing one of those dang Chrysler cars where it's behind the bumper.
