Excellent video. I have a 2012 2.5L and I was watching a video of someone replacing the cat on the 3.0 model and I was very intimidated. Turns out, the 2.5 only has one cat and it's directly under the vehicle. Sigh of relief!

Very helpful. Thanks, Ryan. My 2012 Escape needs that exact same repair. This failure occurred less than a year after purchasing it at the end of Dec 2021 with 86,000 miles. The pipe separates from the rear of the resonator, and the studs that go into the rubber insulator hangers are almost rusted off the muffler. Speaking of rust, the lower rear tailgate and both rear quarter panels around the edge of the wheel openings are beginning to rust. Nearly every 2nd generation Escape I've seen has rust showing, including my wife's 2010 Escape. Apparently, this happens to all of them sooner or later. I made a temporary repair using some bolts and metal strips until I can get a replacement muffler assembly. That happened this weekend. When separating the rear flange, I chose to remove the tailpipe resonator so I could grind out the old gasket as it was rusted into that side of the flange. The rest of the repair went similar to yours.

Just wanted to say thanks for this excellent video. It worked great for our 2012 Ford Escape - only note I would add is that the hangers on the link (as of April 2024) had holes that were quite a bit larger then our vehicle, so I stuck with the originals. But otherwise everything was spot on. Nice work and thanks again!

@@ryanrepairs675 I cut out my cat converter and welded a pipe there instead. My vehicle runs much faster now and more responsive. I still kept my mufflers, just no more CAT converter which was giving me trouble.

Have you considered unbolting the catalytic converter and working on it off the vehicle ? You would have to replace the front gasket, but that would extend the life of the entire exhaust system. Mix a bit of that exhaust paste and use it as a lubricant when installing the catalytic converter into the other pipe. That will seal any leaks for sure . Great video bro !

i have to do the same thing for my 2012 escape, but i have no pipe between the resonator and catalytic conv to work with. looks like i will probably have to get mine welded instead of clamped & sealed. either way this video was soooo helpful, THANK YOU!

RE: Tailpipe/Resonator: Walker does not appear to have Stainless. Found a company, Norltheastern Exhaust that makes stainless tailpipe/resonator & muffler assembly. Great quality and does not look like generic reboxed. $280 shipped.

you did amazing job start to finish with explaination. I feel confident now walking into my mechanics garage and talking about it while on lift. Not an idiot and he knows. He loves when I come into the garage. He finds out fast I listen, do what I can, and he will double check me if I don't have him do it. My exhusband who I am visiting with 8 hours away won't put it on our lift. $80,000 tools and one hugh lift...... It makes me feel good when I walk into my mechanics and he knows he can help me do something HE won't. HE always look like a prick in mechanics eye!! HIS mechanic too so HE shouldn't not do it. HE will do complex Backhoe or zeroturn mower engine/motors but not want to do something so easy for me. I meet with mechanic tomorrow but not until I pull my Escape into my heated garage and get underneath to be prepared. Guess what? My 2009 Mazda Tribute with the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder DOES NOT have a 2.25" O.D. pipe at the outlet of the catalytic converter. The entire length from the outlet of the converter to the stock (original) muffler is 2.0". Therefore, the Walker assembly #56233 will not fit snugly over the pipe behind the converter, its 2.25" I.D. inlet is 1/4" too large. Evidently, Escapes are different than (at least some) Tributes. Also, my converter is apparently longer than that on your Escape, because the inlet of the Walker assembly comes within 1" of the rear of the converter - not really enough room to insert an adapter (2" I.D. x 2.25" O.D) that will be needed between the outlet of the converter and the inlet of the Walker assembly.

I have that same thing, uh, come down. The Wells had finally given way and I hack saw it off. And got me a stainless steel flexible exhaust pipe from autozone and fixed it. That was only cost to me about ten well fifteen dollars with the hexall

great video. thorough. well explained and clear filming. currently have the exact same problem. same year car. i had to jury rig some heavy wire to wrap around and pull the larger muffler to the resonator cause that part of the pipe came undone. been trying to figure out what to do. as it is, the inspection is due this month and i know they’re going to want to replace the whole thing. was looking to possibly fix this myself like you’ve done but then worry that if they see this they may find something else. how can you avoid dealing with replacing the catalytic converter if it doesn’t necessarily need it? how can one tell if that needs replacing? then again, it’s 10 years old and maybe better to just replace the whole thing.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm lucky in that I've never had to deal with inspections. I would think if you replaced the parts shown here and the system was intact they wouldn't have a problem with it. If for some reason they find issue with the Cat. converter under the car you should be able to swap a replacement in while keeping the new muffler/ mid-pipe section. I believe Walker made a replacement Cat. that goes in front of the section I replaced.

Should have just replaced the resonator with a pipe, which would have been the fasted and cheapest option. The rest of the factory exhaust is stainless, and the replacement you got is aluminized steel. I bought a used escape a couple of years ago with an installed pipe and it runs very quit even without the resonator.

As long as you had cut the pipe, and were crawling around under there with a light, it makes sense to look at the converter matrix for any obvious damage....there was like 2 frames where you could see it looked ok!

These Escapes have 3 catalytic converters. One is all one piece connected to the front manifold.

My 2009 Escape hybrid has only one catalytic converter, muffler, and a resonator . California version has two cats , muffler and resonator. Anything to please the EPA !

I would apply a bit of that muffler paste on that pipe before sliding in. It would cover the cracks and any leaks !

Mufflers get rusted through. It sounds loud then. It might give you a faulty code too (check engine light on)
