Excellent explanation, besides that I used my humble scanner and I was able to check: cylinder misfire (6) ok , O2 sensor (4) ok , catalytic 2 ok, catalytic 1 HIGH , max value 3000, reading 3239 , code P0420 , I’m going to try cleaning first before replacing it. Time for me to share my current experience. I have a 2012 Kia Soul 1.6 GDI The engine seems okay, I have not noticed any power lost, no overheating, no black smoke, no white smoke. I checked the temperature with a lazer gun and it reads 200ish by the exhaust manifold and close to 400F at the end of the catalytic converter, I can't really check the temperature of the catalytic converter because of the heat shield, I will probably remove it and check the temperature 🌡 😑 I don't smell anything under the car, I even put my nose inside the exhaust and didn't smell anything, no antifreeze smell, coolant looks nice and green, oil is clean, it doesn't burn oil, but the check engine light comes on and stays on. I'm going to need to remove the catalytic converter and do a visual inspection, also need to inspect spark plugs and need to check inside each cylinder to see if they have a lot of carbon deposits. GDI is a carbon deposits machine. The OEM catalytic converter cost 1,790 dollars plus tax, plus 3 hour installation, Kia charges 180.00 dollars per hour labor so the total would be about 2,700 after taxes and fees. A local muffler shop can isntall a cheap catalytic converter for 800.00 with a 1 year warranty maybe the cat is at the early stages of failure 100%

I will be replacing head gasket, O-Ring seals under rocker-arm carriage and catalytic converter on a 1989 Honda Civic. Replaced the oxygen sensor, but that did not improve the problem. Have had some issues with anti-freeze going through the exhaust, so at 146,000 miles on the car, it's time to invest some money and labor into the car.

i purchased some high flow cats last yr. and I got a code of p1421. I noticed it was sputtering on my driver side. I just checked under the car today and found out my cat has a small hole in it. I felt the hot air sputtering out of that hole. something told me it was a hole. I went to many auto shops, and they told me it was a relearn procedure that needs to be done. some said I needed to get an update on my ecu. none of that was the issue. I bought some pb weld and fixed it myself for 6 bucks. no more sputtering and the check engine light never came back on. car drives like it was supposed to . now i can get my inspection done . hooray!

My G37 sedan had a code p1421 . I've purchased high flow cats from kinetic right after . my check engine light stayed on. It reads as follows. p1421. These cats were brand new but after a while I noticed some rattle when I cold start. It sounded off. Then emissions came around and I still don't know what it could be. The forums say to purchase the cell fix for high flow cats and test pipes. plus, a tune could help. oem cats are way too expensive when it restricts power. The forums also said do not use the cells fix if your cats are bad. I do have a sluggish engine. my mileage is lower than when I purchased the car. I used to have 22.8 mpg now I get like 11.5. car sounds good but I waste gas and I find myself buying more every three days. should i buy the oem cats? should i try the cell or should i just get a new high flow cat and then put the cell on it before the o2

2006 rav4 153k miles with lots of short distance trips, recently got P2195 (O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Lean /Bank 1 Sensor 1), after replacing both O2 sensors, maf sensor, spark plugs, fuel injectors, problem still exists, now getting code p0420 catalytic converter low efficiency and p0172 system run rich. Car vibration at stop sign and rotten egg smell detected. Fuel line checked ok, fuel pressure tested within spec, no vacuum leak, no exhaust leak. Is it time for a catalytic converter replacement?

check the cats . mine had a small hole in it which made that code pop up . listen to your car when you start it with a cold start . listen closely to similar sounds from the cats. if one is off tone then its most likely a small leak . my high flow cats had one and i got a code of p1421. below threshold blah blah blah. got some pb weld and fixed the hole myself for 6 bucks. now my shit purrs like a kitten/.

So there are laws for buying a used car even if it’s a final sale. If they tampered with any parts to present it was safe to drive when it wasn’t then they have to give you you’re money back. They don’t Have to tell you pre existing issue with the car tho like if the transmission is failing , it is ur responsibility to check everything or bring you’re own mechanic before you guy it. But if they tampered with the dashboard or cleared the codes. Using fake pray to hide corrosion or anything like that you can take them to court. It’s why you should always test drive a car for a couple miles and take it on the freeway before you buy it. Usually if a catalytic converter is missing you can hear it. It is extremely loud! Did you notice an unusual noise at all?

It could be an exhaust leak near the sensor or anywhere upstream of the sensor, so I wouldn't just let them throw high dollar parts at it unless you are very wealthy.

Help needed! My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0 turbo with only 38k is struggling going uphill. The car is extremely smooth. I checked the fuel pump and replaced the fuel filter although they were clean and fine. I remember two years ago I cleaned the catalytic converter with a cleaning spray product that indeed unclogged it. I was on a trip 3 days ago and found out that the car loses power uphill. I believe it's due to my driving habit. I drive only 5 to 10 miles a day and the car sits all day. No check engine light. Any help is appreciated.

Are they OEM sensors sometimes the resistance and the specs from manufacturer sensors are different if you buy aftermarket ones and even if you install them the computer won't even bother reading them

Curious if anyone has any suggestions about my p0420 code (low efficiency, bank 1). I bought a 2016 Encore, base model with 100k miles on it. I just changed the cat and both o2 censors but the light came back on about 60 miles after the change. Before it came back on I heard a odd humming sound and it felt like it was running a little rough while driving for a few seconds. After letting it cool down I turned the car back on and sprayed the immediate area before and after the cat with soapy water to see if there was a leak but didn't find anything. Any idea what it could be? Thanks.

2010 Ford Escape 3.0 6-cyl 221k miles: P0420 but for over the past 1000 miles, at high load and high rpm, very loud "swooshing" jet engine thrust like sound coming out tailpipe with proportional loss of power. I suspect cat has broken up and plugged up the downstream muffler. Ultrasonic cleaner may clean the cat - but it may disintegrate the honeycomb too.

Some of what you said is correct but you are mixing issues the catalytic had to be very hot to function correctly and you did not say anything about exhaust leaks /bad o2 sensors codes p0420 and p0430 need to recheck after making sure no exhaust leaks no misfire no lean or rich fuel system the test should bone at cruise speed of 55 mph and look at the rear o2 sensor switch pattern it should switch slow between rich and lean, rotten egg smell can be caused by rich fuel system and hard acceleration so it does not mean bad catalytic converter, rich /lean/misfire or any other conditions will set DTC and they should be check and repaired before testing or even replacing the CATs.
