Just finished this on a 2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0L. Here are some quick notes on my job. On both the driver side and the passenger side the caliper pistons were right hand(clockwise rotation). I used a caliper compression tool I bought off of Amazon. It used adapter plate "M" and the R/H threaded rod and the "T" handle was turned clockwise. Brake shoe holder required a 13mm socket and was torqued to 45 ft. lbs.. Caliper assembly used a 7mm Allen bit and was torqued to 20 ft. lbs. I used an 8mm socket to remove the brake hose bracket and also pulled brake cable grommet out of it's bracket to get more play for removing caliper assembly. Caliper grease was used on all metal to metal contacts on brake shoes and on slide pins. I also used a very light coating of copper anti-seize on flat of hub after it was cleaned of rust and also inside of the new drum. This should keep rust off so every time the wheels are removed rust doesn't throw rotors out of true. I also cleaned rust off of center of wheels because both had to be beaten off the car. And yes, they were aluminum alloy wheels. This was a great video to watch with all the details you need. Great job, thank you so much.

Thanks for clarifying the nonsense about the passenger/driver side clockwise/counterclockwise...

Extra tips: You should clean up the rotor with brake cleaner. You should remove the slider pins from the caliper and lube those. You should remove and clean up the caliper bracket that the pad slides in as the brake is applied. It is prone to rusting and not allowing the pad to fully release off the rotor after the brake is released. Failure to do so can cause premature brake wear especially in areas prone to corrosion. You should apply brake lube to metal on metal contact points like that caliper bracket and the back of the pad to prevent brake noise.

Good information I’m changing the brakes on my wife’s car which is a 2018 escape the rear brakes for the first time. The times have changed last time I’ve done a brake job I push the piston back with a C clamp and a Old pad🤬

Definitely need to rent the tool. We struggled way too long without it and finally put it all back together and got one. Only took a little while then.

Callipers are really clean here. In most climates you would need to remove rust and debris from all the sliding surfaces before applying the correct lubrication. If the sliding pins are tight and one pad is wearing faster than the other, try removing the plastic bushes in the calliper bracket and look for corrosion. Mine were so bad it had forced the bushes to tighten onto the pins. Clean it off and fit new bushes after applying silicon grease to the holes in the bracket to keep water out. Also apply it to the pins. To get better access, the end of handbrake (parking brake) cable can be un-hooked from the lever. My pistons were both right hand thread - clockwise to retract. This brake design is also fitted to the C Max here in Europe.

Thanks for the tips. Just did mine but learned the drivers side piston also retracts by turning clockwise. Otherwise went exactly as you described.

Did you forget to line up the two nubs on the caliper piston with the horizontal nubs on the new brake pads? Over time, the improper lineup of the protruding nubs could cause damage to the caliper.

I believe they both get pushed in clockwise on the driver side as well I just tried to do it counterclockwise and the piston popped out and now I can't get it back in :-(
@BrandonSchreiner-j3o Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, super helpful. What is the purpose for turning the piston? If it is just to align the pad nubs with the piston slots that should never need more than a half turn. Is the intent to also set piston height? How do you know when to stop? Is that step still needed when using maintenance mode for an electronic brake system?
@JoDaddysGarage Жыл бұрын
On this vehicle, the piston is connected to The parking brake. It “unscrews” as the pads wear down so the parking brake will work. Different on a modern vehicle.

Was there a reason you didn't Lube the calipers smooth portion of the slider pin/bolts? And apply antiseize to back of pads that make contact with caliper? I usually remove master cylinder cap while compressing piston to prevent damage to abs by forced back pressure. By the way do the rotors slide over lugs or are the rotors/ hubs combined ? Thanks Nice job.
@JoDaddysGarage Жыл бұрын
We don’t have much if any corrosion in Ga. So no lube. Taking the cap off is a good idea. Rotor was separate.

It wouldn’t hurt. I don’t know if the 2018 has electric parking brakes. On other cars, I put it in service mode and they compressed easily. You could try to compress and see if there’s a lot of resistance. It may move easily. Just don’t force it.
