Hi Dave, nice video, love Mk1 and 2 Escorts. Some notes on spraying 2k paint. You mentioned you mixed the paint thick and thought that would help with paint runs but the opposite is true. The thinner it is the less likely you are to get runs, this is because it goes on dryer as the thinner evaporates in the transfer and it also evaporates quicker once on the car, drying the paint before it can run. A viscosity cup is a brilliant tool and the data sheet will tell you what the viscosity should be. This allows you to spray in any temperature and get the same results. We know that paint flows faster in summer so measuring the viscosity means more thinner in winter but as long as the viscosity is the same it will go on the same and you won't get runs. (with some practice). I brush too in awkward places. Regards Ben

Dave . 2k paint needs a flash off time between coats , so-- light dust coat-- wait 10/ 15 mins , then second coat should be a dry coat - let flash off 15/20 - then a full wet coat. Also remember that this paint flows out as its drying. Hope this helps.

I enjoyed that video Dave, maybe borrow a diesel heater or similar before painting to get the shell up to a decent temp which helps lessen runs. Also a 1.2 or 1.4 nozzle to help atomize paint better. Great work as usual 👍

Thumbs up for brush painting a nice thick layer of paint and not a thin sprayed layer, well that's how they used to do it when coach painting, i think spray painting can be a bit wasteful seeing as a lot of the paint goes into the air and not on the car, and when it does go into the air it dries and becomes a dust that you can get back on the car, catch 22,
@DavesGarageuk Жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree, I've rollered/brushed 3 projects before, VW T2 Bay, Mini, Beetle, all came out a treat, but that was with Rustoleum paint. Goes so much further too..
@Welder-y5x Жыл бұрын
@@DavesGarageuk defiantly use a roller, i used one with red oxide on very pitted lorry parts, a nice thick layer, it worked a treat, i then gave the parts a spay can of red oxide on top for a smooth finish before a chassis black coat, the important thing it got paint on the parts and not on the floor. let us know your results as painting is an expensive and contentious subject and if we can make it easier for the shed restorer with little if no equipment then all to the good.

I find 2k is really good to work with. It's alot more forgiving than basecoat. But I have not tried cellulose. The thing with 2k is you can apply it with anything. If it has plenty coats on you can flat them back to a good finish. So you can get a good mirror finish paint job with a roller if you spend time flatting it back and polishing. Kinda like a good grinder is a good welder 😉. And also wetting the floor helps keep dust to a minimum when painting

I regularly reach for a brush or roller. The finish isn't so nice with a roller but fine for areas you can't see. My escort I rollered the inside and out side of the roof, its covered both sides so no worries. Find the mini foam rollers are the best. Also just brushed on epoxy primer on the vans inner wings, no way to spray in there.

Genfit do both a black & a white enamel paint. Either are about as good as boggo black or white get without going 2 pack. Both are a bit like Halfords weld-through primer - they ought be crap, but oddly are not - they are strangely excellent. I'm unsure what primer any money buys that is better than Halfords weld-through primer (I've not found one) - or any black/white paint that is better than the boggo Genfit stuff straight out the can.
@DavesGarageuk Жыл бұрын
Just Googled that stuff, never heard of it before, looks like agricultural enamel, so I guess has to be tough, I'll see if i can order a tin of black, it'll be good for the suspension etc. Ta.

@@DavesGarageuk Either get Genfit or Tractol - Tractol is good too & often better priced. Tractol matt black is really good for axles, suspension, tie rods and the like - it's more subtle & also very tough. I use it on LR stuff, lasts very well. :-)

@@Bikedealer4U Devilbiss FLG5 can use fluid tips from 1.2 up to 2.0 (maybe 1.8?) so you can use it for primer and clear/base/2k gloss (must be cleaned out thoroughly if you’re using it for all applications).
