What size wire are you using? The smaller the wire, the less heat will be put into it. Have you tried messing with the wire speed? It's a challenge dialing in a welder, but you'll get there.

There are many ways of applying the paint. Once the lids off it is up to you. Pour it on, use a watering can, brush, roller or a spray gun. Bottom line it's all in the prep. You spend hours with a sponge washing it just use 1500 grit wetsand to flatten the surface. I've always rollered cars as I've never had a spray booth. If you can use a roller on an internal wall you can use a roller on an external surface. I'm literally in the process of doing bodywork on a mk1capri 1700 gtxlr and using the roller method to apply the primer. I used to wetsand plugs of yachts to take molds from so to me it's a surface which needs preparation. Keep up te good work

I've owned a poorly '72 mk1 for about 5 years now and only just getting started. I have the dreaded rear scuttle rot like you (fortunately just one side) front winscreen/scuttle...one corner and I'm converting to RHD! i'm an Essex lad that's lived in Germany for 11 years. My Mrs (also English) can't understand why i want RHD. Simply put...the Mexico (which mine will be a replica of) wasn't sold in Europe and everyone knows Mk1 Escorts have to be RHD just as all the same era Opel Kadetts need to be LHD. I bought mine in 2019 from a lovely chap in Croatia. Drove down with a borrowed trailer and back in 2 days. The fun thing is I have its last parking permit for a University in Zagreb. It was on the road in 2017 still! Keep up the great work chap. You're inspiring me to get on with mine!

Can't give you the scientific reasons behind it, but I have learned over the years to stick either to 1k or 2k from start to finish. I never combine both, and touch wood, haven't had a problem since. I know it's a pain having to clean out the spray gun every time etc, instead of just using a rattle can, but works out quicker and better in the end as there is nothing worse than having to do anything twice IMHO. Tony.

Hi Dave. Having painted 3 cars now, I think it's fair to say that I've made every mistake there is to make! I'm an expert on paint reactions, to my detriment. I know everyone has their own opinions and ways of doing things, but this is what I've learnt. All weld through primers although zinc rich, which is good for anti-corrosion, have really poor adhesion to the base metal. Also, they are a 1K product, as are nearly all etch primers, which I also do not rate at all and have had tons of trouble with in the early days. The problem with any 1K product is that the solvents in anything you put on top of it just dissolve it (Trev of Trev's blog has a good video on this subject). So my rule is, bare metal, then 2K epoxy primer, then 2K high build primer, basecoat, clearcoat. I don't use a 1K aerosol primer for any rub-throughs either as I have had that react with basecoat. This is because solvent basecoat is 50% thinners. The HB Body 989 can be thinned at 50%, so you can spray a fine thin coat onto any exposed bare metal. Also, buying the recommended thinners for the 989 is a good move as it is a different chemical composition to normal 2K thinners and is less aggressive.

Hi Dave, I only use the weld throug primer on the seams as I'm welding panels together, it does have a high zinc content but it rubs off easy, it comes of with wax & grease remover, you can go direct to metal with the expoxy, just leave it a few days to gas off then make sure you sand it. Is all the paint your shooting 1k? You can get fry ups simply because of all the solvent we've all been there. I wonder if the expoxy hadn't set enough before you hit it with the following coats of paint and went right throug to the primer. Still you recovered it without to much drama, looking good. Cheers Marty
@DavesGarageuk16 күн бұрын
Hi Marty, yep lesson learnt the hard way... I'll be sticking to 2k for the outer paint job.

@@DavesGarageuk we only learn from our mistakes, I've made plenty and still make them now, just be careful with the 2k it's nasty stuff, I am just uploading a video on you tube now of start to finish on painting the roof on a mini all in 2k apart from the base coat.
