The tool he used is called nippers or “nips” basically HD industrial wire cutters. Used by scaffolders to attach iron grating to scaffolds with steel wire. As an insulator in oilfield we use nips to cut and burn wire (usually galvanized wire that isn’t as thick as what a scaffolder would use) to firmly snug various types of fibreglass insulators to pipes. The shape on the end is designed to help reduce high spots or sharp points, which is further reduced by burning the wire.

wat usualy did to get the cv joint off the diveshaft is go to the vice open it up some so the axle slide over it , slide the boot over the other end lay the shaft in the vice and slide it out to the side so the vice hits the cv joint that you took the clip off , avoids hitting it wrong and puts the weight of the driveshaft behind removing the cv joint

The first time I ever had to cope with those little sliding bushings in RX-7 knuckles took me forever to figure out. What I like to do now is take a C clamp, and back the side I want the bushing to slide to with a socket bigger than the OD of the bushing. Never considered trying your bolt/tap trick, that could really come in handy when there aren't flat surfaces.
