Ford F-150 Heated and Auto Dimming Mirror Glass Replacement (2009-2014)

Our first Raptor project is today, which is replacing the mirror glass since it was cracked by the previous owner (and just before I picked it up to boot).
Not a difficult process in number of steps, but a bit of a pain to pry out the old glass. There weren’t any videos I could find showing steps for the auto dimming or heated glass, so hopefully this clarifies that for folks who are curious.

To remove mirror glass - use a flat tip screwdriver in the 8 and 4 positions, insert into the funnelled guide and twist.

Thanks good video. I wonder though if the 2 wires are used for the auto dim feature or heating. I need to replace my power folding housing and almost every replacement part does not feature auto dimming glass. I can’t figure out if that is a feature of the glass or needs a power supply. If I buy the replacement without auto dim will it be missing the wire leads…

Great question and one that I don't know the answer to unfortunately...I don't have a wiring diagram and frankly, I didn't pay much attention to the mirror when I had it off to figure out which function was which. I do believe that it's powered though...again, not familiar with the specific technology that this auto dim glass is based on. Thanks for watching!

For any future comment readers, the black clip you pulled off is for the auto dimming feature. The black and green wire goes to the heating element.

@@vsphotography8 yes. I’ve replaced my auto dimming with non auto dimming mirrors personally on my own vehicle and it won’t throw any codes.

Was the mirror that you purchased new or used? What year is your truck? What tool did you use to get the old mirror to unsnap from the adjustable mount? Thanks in advance.

It was "used" but showed up in like new condition including labels...open box if I had to guess myself. Mine's a 2011, and I just used some plastic pry tools as well as a screwdriver to get the mirror to unsnap. I know there are some skilled folks out there that can get it off without breaking it, but I definitely destroyed my already-cracked one doing the swap. Thanks for watching!

This part does not have the auto dimming. I found the seller on eBay who used this video in the item description. If it were auto dimming the glass would have a yellow tint to it

Mine does (at least the one I bought and showed in the video) - no yellow tint but does auto dim. There may be multiple tints for the glass like some Japanese auto manufacturers have - not sure. Thanks for watching!

Sounds like a wiring issue - could be mirror harness or door harness. That's where I'd check, assuming fuses are all good related to those lights. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus I found one and swapped it out, but now the glass seems to be stuck permanently in autodim mode but I don't see any cracks and all the connections are good. Any ideas?

@@brandongodinez7907 Not sure, unless you have an issue with the sunlight sensor (in cabin on dash) or something else related to the control system for auto dim.

Ford wanted $460 for replacement just for the glass. Napa wanted $350 I got the exact replacement from Amazon for 35 bucks with the heating element.
