In this video I have a look at a Ford F350 with a 6.0 power stroke that is in very sad shape. By that I mean it had some sort of engine fire the customer neglected to tell me about. All that to the side I did get the vehicle running again but it sure would have been nice to get all the facts haha. -Enjoy!

Interesting to read all of the negative comments about not touching it. It's a truck that won't start. If that's your trouble shooting skill level then get out of the way and let someone that's up to the challenge. Well done Mr O.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's not whether you're up for the challenge of troubleshooting and fixing a no-start. I love a good troubleshooting challenge, but I don't want to wind up "married" to a POS vehicle...where every fault that occurs after I get it running suddenly becomes 'my' fault whether its related to any repairs I've made or not. In the event I wind up working on something like this, I definitely make sure to document everything (much like Eric O. has with the video). Eric took on a lot of risk by accepting this challenge. Hopefully his customer is an honest one and will appreciate the fact that his beater truck is a runner once again.
@NBSV1
@NBSV1 5 жыл бұрын
It’s seems to often someone with a vehicle like this expects everything to work perfectly after one thing is repaired. And they don’t want to pay because obviously you broke their truck. With the injection pressure sensor not reading it’ll likely be down on power and maybe have other issues. So, the customer may complain and blame Eric for tearing up his truck.
@audiowize
@audiowize 5 жыл бұрын
The big issue with something like this is that the truck is likely to have more issues related to that electrical fire down the road, and Mr. O is taking a huge chance that the customer doesn't come back in a month or two complaining about other problems and trying to get more work done for free because the problem "wasn't properly fixed" previously. Personally the truck is scrap without that new wiring harness.
@seanclark8452
@seanclark8452 4 жыл бұрын
He's got to make a living, and not waste the customers money on futile efforts for and end of life vehicle if he can help it. That fire cause multiple problems that interlocked to make troubleshooting tougher. They could easily have made it a job that didn't pay, or didn't pay enough to cover costs. If that fire damage was intermittently doing something that kills the ECU you could lose multiple ECUs with no fix unless you replace the harness and anything suspect connected to it first, which wouldn't be a reasonable expense for a winter beater.

Nice video. I have some Ford diesel experience and predict that without the injection pressure sensor the truck won't have any power - unplugging that sensor is a common troubleshooting practice to see if it's bad- when the computer fails to see that return signal it moves into a default fuel pressure strategy- on the 7.3 its 500 lbs - I can't remember what it is on the 6.0 but the truck will get you home .. most Ford diesel owners keep an IPC in the glove box. I recently had a 7.3 in that had been to 3 other shops - took me about 3 hours to find everything - it was a shorted 5 volt reference in the fuel petal and then it wouldn't start - found it was not building enough high pressure in the fuel injection system - found a failed top oil seal ring on an injector - resealed it and then found that that same injector had another oil sealing issue - replaced that injector and the machine was running just fine... mr O is perfect with his diagnosis.. however ... even though it left running I would make it very clear in writing that the repair had a tail light warranty- when the tail lights are out of sight the warranty is over...

*You got it all wrong! Problem 1. it's a Ford. Problem 2. it's a 6.0 Ford, problem 3 ignition switch, Problem 4 broken wire, 5. customer not telling you everything that was wrong to begin with. ex. no mention of the thing catching on fire. i'm sure this is absolutely not the first time a customer has left out important information on you. and more than likely won't be the last. Personally i would never have rolled it in my shop. i would have looked under the hood and seen the fire residue and instantly told them they needed a new wiring harness for that truck. but that's just how i would do things. i appreciate that you went the extra mile because it gave the shade tree mechanic ideas of things they could look at and check if they ever ran into something like this. So while it was a bit of a pain in the butt it was informative and good content too*

I honestly felt like I was an expert on my 6.0 after all the blood, sweat and tears I have put into it over the last 7 years, but I definitely learned a few new things watching this! Thanks for the great content! I'm one of the typical 6 leaker owners that says "once you bullet proof it, it's a great motor!" In all reality, I love my truck, and if it were to lift a head again I'd gladly repair it. Having a powerful truck that is paid for is just so damn nice. Pulls the fifth wheel through the mountains like a dream and gets me to work every day without a hitch. Sure it has its problems every once in a while, but what 16 year old truck that is daily driven doesn't?

I agree. Mines a 2007 and is going on 475,000 miles. The oil pan gasket leaks but it runs great. It does need nickel and dime parts every now and then but since it’s paid off and the insurance is cheap it’s not so bad. Cheap hp. Plus it doesn’t need DEF and I deleted the EGR. I test drove a new 2020 RAM 3500 and it didn’t ride as nice or feel as nice as my 6.0. I’ll pass.

You are a damn good electrical troubleshooter, great video! As to the green wire issue, it's a Ford so lots of times the WD's won't match the actual truck. Bet that wire went through something else before going to the fuse panel. Heck sometimes the parts listed for a particular year and model won't even be correct. Ordering parts for Fords can be very frustrating and challenging. Not a big fan of Fords, but they have make me a ton of money over the years. You know it's a bad design when you have to pull the whole cab off the truck just to work on the engine!

Derrick Lavoie yeah and with only 85k miles it sounds like at least one cylinder is way down on compression. That’s pretty sad but I’m guessing once the rust got bad they probably stopped changing the oil and doing other important maintenance that can be critical on the 6.0. There are several ways these Powerstrokes can try to self destruct if neglected.

I'm pretty sure it's not a low compression issue your hearing rather than low icp pressure considering he cut the icp sensor wire which puts the regulator in default ,those injectors are oil fired and when they don't have the proper pressure they run funny if at all,not a good idea to run that without the sensor.
@semjrx2
@semjrx2 5 жыл бұрын
@@realliferepair9285 No disrespect at all; I'm fairly certain Derrick is referring to the engine turning over without fire. Low ICP pressure shouldn't have any effect on what you hear while the engine is turning over. If you listen closely, you can hear the engine speed up/slow down before it fires. That's usually caused by lack of compression due to various reasons. I'm no diesel mechanic, just a DIYer that's turned a few bolts on a 6.0 so forgive my ignorance if I'm way off base

Gotta give ya mad props... your not a quitter !!! One thing I always do when I pull any of these old assed jacked up electrical connections loose like the ignition switch connector /block is try and clean and load the connector contacts up with "Super Lube dielectric grease" Reason is, especially on plow or work trucks, theres a lot of ambient moisture, salt water that hangs around these connectors, causes points of contact to get corroded and can cause the mechanical connections to get bad and heat up resulting in overheated or fried connectors... grease will help keep future moisture/corrosion outta the connectors.. honestly the wiring harness under the hood AND under the dash are probably BOTH just hanging in there by a thread and shot. But you sure got her runnin !!!

Car Wash Adam Cooper; that made me love Ford vehicles even more. As Mr. Mechanic here said, “well folks, she lives to die another day.” She survived a fire, and still runs, despite her flaws. The last GM vehicle I owned was plagued with crippling engine, and electrical problems that blossomed out of poor engineering on behalf of Government Motors. Working on those cars was an absolute nightmare. I now drive Toyotas, and still own a 1999 Ford Ranger, 459,000 miles later, that still looks really good, despite her old age. No more GMs for me ever.

When you short out the 5v reference, you lose ecm that controls when safe to start. Green wire must go to ecm, ecm checks sensors if safe to start then sends power back to fuse box. When you fixed the 5v reference, you fixed the "broken wire" which was actually the ecm not seeing safe start. For future reference, I've used a phone/LAN line tracer to find broken wires. Works great, cheap and wireless. BTW I never would have caught that the com was down to the ecm and the shorted 5v. Would have thought the ecm was toast.

Many of us know how to wrench, can troubleshoot engine or other mechanical problems, swap an engine, and generally bolt on any part you can think of. Installing and plumbing a chinese turbo kit? No big deal. But the mechanic that can accurately and efficiently troubleshoot electrical systems and digital electronics is something completely different and is absolutely invaluable to the trade.
