Shawn Clark i will be proactive is some knucklehead is going to chime in here that gm “put the horrific 350ci diesel in their trucks “- implying the 6.2 and 6.5 were a converted Gas engine = fake news...... the 6.5td in 1994 was the first diesel electronic fuel injection and was ahead of its time until the first power stroke was released in 1995. . In 94+ gm diesel repair mechs, had no clue how to “properly” diagnose the accompanying electrical/fueling issues.... fast forward to 2003, ford pre-releases the 6.0 for (supposedly) emissions reasons and they (mechs) have the same troubleshooting issues except on a much more $$$/hr scale..... as of today both engines (thanks to the aftermarket and owner base) both the 6.5td and 6.0 power stroke CAN be made highly reliable. The STUPID mentality about brand ownership doesn’t STOP failure/breakdown it ONLY changes to a DIFFERENT set of “problems”... The videos like this and forums alike are what help contribute to future “fix it right, fix it once “ quality of the technician! Thank you @ south main!

Nice video. I have some Ford diesel experience and predict that without the injection pressure sensor the truck won't have any power - unplugging that sensor is a common troubleshooting practice to see if it's bad- when the computer fails to see that return signal it moves into a default fuel pressure strategy- on the 7.3 its 500 lbs - I can't remember what it is on the 6.0 but the truck will get you home .. most Ford diesel owners keep an IPC in the glove box. I recently had a 7.3 in that had been to 3 other shops - took me about 3 hours to find everything - it was a shorted 5 volt reference in the fuel petal and then it wouldn't start - found it was not building enough high pressure in the fuel injection system - found a failed top oil seal ring on an injector - resealed it and then found that that same injector had another oil sealing issue - replaced that injector and the machine was running just fine... mr O is perfect with his diagnosis.. however ... even though it left running I would make it very clear in writing that the repair had a tail light warranty- when the tail lights are out of sight the warranty is over...

Interesting to read all of the negative comments about not touching it. It's a truck that won't start. If that's your trouble shooting skill level then get out of the way and let someone that's up to the challenge. Well done Mr O.
@AKJeeper5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's not whether you're up for the challenge of troubleshooting and fixing a no-start. I love a good troubleshooting challenge, but I don't want to wind up "married" to a POS vehicle...where every fault that occurs after I get it running suddenly becomes 'my' fault whether its related to any repairs I've made or not. In the event I wind up working on something like this, I definitely make sure to document everything (much like Eric O. has with the video). Eric took on a lot of risk by accepting this challenge. Hopefully his customer is an honest one and will appreciate the fact that his beater truck is a runner once again.
@NBSV15 жыл бұрын
It’s seems to often someone with a vehicle like this expects everything to work perfectly after one thing is repaired. And they don’t want to pay because obviously you broke their truck. With the injection pressure sensor not reading it’ll likely be down on power and maybe have other issues. So, the customer may complain and blame Eric for tearing up his truck.
@audiowize5 жыл бұрын
The big issue with something like this is that the truck is likely to have more issues related to that electrical fire down the road, and Mr. O is taking a huge chance that the customer doesn't come back in a month or two complaining about other problems and trying to get more work done for free because the problem "wasn't properly fixed" previously. Personally the truck is scrap without that new wiring harness.
@seanclark84525 жыл бұрын
He's got to make a living, and not waste the customers money on futile efforts for and end of life vehicle if he can help it. That fire cause multiple problems that interlocked to make troubleshooting tougher. They could easily have made it a job that didn't pay, or didn't pay enough to cover costs. If that fire damage was intermittently doing something that kills the ECU you could lose multiple ECUs with no fix unless you replace the harness and anything suspect connected to it first, which wouldn't be a reasonable expense for a winter beater.

Thanks for the great content! I'm one of the typical 6 leaker owners that says "once you bullet proof it, it's a great motor!" In all reality, I love my truck, and if it were to lift a head again I'd gladly repair it. Having a powerful truck that is paid for is just so damn nice. Pulls the fifth wheel through the mountains like a dream and gets me to work every day without a hitch. Sure it has its problems every once in a while, but what 16 year old truck that is daily driven doesn't?

I agree. Mines a 2007 and is going on 475,000 miles. The oil pan gasket leaks but it runs great. Personally i would never have rolled it in my shop. i would have looked under the hood and seen the fire residue and instantly told them they needed a new wiring harness for that truck. but that's just how i would do things. i appreciate that you went the extra mile because it gave the shade tree mechanic ideas of things they could look at and check if they ever ran into something like this. One thing I always do when I pull any of these old assed jacked up electrical connections loose like the ignition switch connector /block is try and clean and load the connector contacts up with "Super Lube dielectric grease" Reason is, especially on plow or work trucks, theres a lot of ambient moisture, salt water that hangs around these connectors, causes points of contact to get corroded and can cause the mechanical connections to get bad and heat up resulting in overheated or fried connectors... grease will help keep future moisture/corrosion outta the connectors.. honestly the wiring harness under the hood AND under the dash are probably BOTH just hanging in there by a thread and shot. Having lived through the 6.0 as a Fixed Operations Director for a Ford dealer, we were glad the 6L lasted only a short time for such problems. A small wiring harness located near the accelerator pedal was frequently the culprit.

Incredible diagnosis. Wiring spaghetti in the fuse box. Fire under the hood. How you sorted out this mess is miraculous. Many others would have dumped some parts in it, then walked away. Eric O, the GOAT

It's diagnosis videos like this that helped me diagnose my daughter's bad ground on her 04 Taurus ECU. Not just trusting 12V for the ECU relay, I saw the test light was dim. Then I saw over 3500 ohms of resistance for the ground. Thank you Eric and SMA for your videos!!!

How about the fire fused the brown wire and the 5-volt wire to ground. The green wire was able to be controlled by the ECM afterward?
@tylerh6295 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that, or the relay that had a signal problem before became active when 5v was restored.
@TheCanadaboy255 жыл бұрын
If you look at the wiring diagram you can see that the ECM doesn't control the green wire. The ECM only controls the ground of the control side on the relay.

not enough voltage getting through the green wire to the coil inside the relay to pull it closed, even if grounded properly through the ECM.

Nothing like hearing low compression in a cylinder.
@sharedknowledge66405 жыл бұрын
Derrick Lavoie yeah and with only 85k miles it sounds like at least one cylinder is way down on compression. That’s pretty sad but I’m guessing once the rust got bad they probably stopped changing the oil and doing other important maintenance that can be critical on the 6.0. There are several ways these Powerstrokes can try to self destruct if neglected.

No kidding, gave me anxiety! Damn thing was brought back from the dead and is living on borrowed time. Won't be long before a lifter fails.
@realliferepair92855 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's not a low compression issue your hearing rather than low icp pressure considering he cut the icp sensor wire which puts the regulator in default ,those injectors are oil fired and when they don't have the proper pressure they run funny if at all,not a good idea to run that without the sensor.
@semjrx25 жыл бұрын
@@realliferepair9285 No disrespect at all; I'm fairly certain Derrick is referring to the engine turning over without fire. Low ICP pressure shouldn't have any effect on what you hear while the engine is turning over. If you listen closely, you can hear the engine speed up/slow down before it fires. That's usually caused by lack of compression due to various reasons. I'm no diesel mechanic, just a DIYer that's turned a few bolts on a 6.0 so forgive my ignorance if I'm way off base

Had a similar problem on a crown vic, green wire behind the fuse was open inside the insulation,would not crank,power on both sides of the fuse but when loaded it lost power.bridged that same wire & it worked, it’s a doosey when the wire looks good on the outside but broken inside,that thing had me spinning my wheels man.I’ll admit I had to ask for help on that one,& it took a few of us in the shop to figure that one out.Honestly I don’t miss working on cars,there getting so complex.when I see you working on something similar to my experiences it’s still intriguing.keep up the good work,& thanks for showing.
