In this video we have to look at a 2005 Toyota Highlander that was towed in as a stalling, ABS/Brake light, no speedometer, not shifting, cooling fan stays on and can't get out of gear complaint... oh did I mention it is not charging either and the battery is dead?! After an initial assessment we focus on one issue and it quickly goes "up in smoke" leading us right to the problem. -Enjoy!

You are correct, Rick.... A blown fuse is never the problem. It is the result of the problem.. When I had what looked like multiple problems, I would work from one item backwards to the power source; doing the same with each item.Usually, they would reach a common point, which would lead you to the problem. Your trouble shooting skills are right on the money.....You earn the right to be called a Technician, which is what you must now be, in addition to a Mechanic.. .. Bravo ...!!!!

Hi Dave. I only work on family vehicles too, as I am 77, but I have been doing it since I was quite young. My first job was in an automatic transmission shop at 11 years old. I started out basically sweeping up, cleaning and putting tools away, and within two weeks I was pulling transmissions out of cars. After HS I joined the USAF and worked on jet engines. Now let me give you a little advice. The major portion of any repair today is the flat rate cost you pay for labor, so it is prudent to approach a repair from a different sense than if you were a mechanic like Eric. On many occasions I have heard Eric say that he can only fix what the customer asked him to fix. I hear the same mantra from Scanner Danner : " Don't be a parts changer". Well, as a DIY guy, I can tell you that there are times when it makes perfect sense to fire the parts canon. For instance, if you have a car with a lot of mileage on it, and the lower radiator hose develops a leak, change them all, flush the radiator, install all new all Stainless clamps, change the thermostat, and gasket, and put in new coolant. All of those parts are less than one hour of flat rate labor. The way I see it, all the hoses have seen the same time in service, and are close to the point of failure. The same applies to Coil on Plugs. If one goes, chances are another is not far behind. The same with bulbs. A mechanic like Eric cannot always do what he thinks would be the best option, you do. Most people today will say "just get it running again" That's fine, right up till it isn't again. I recently completed a timing job on my 2004 f 150. I replaced the timing set, chain adjusters, oil pump, all roller followers and lash adjusters all idler pulleys, belt tensioner, PS pump, AC compressor, accumulator and lines, condenser, all hoses, radiator, throttle body and several other parts. And all of those parts cost around 1500. If I had this done it would have been around 4500 or more, and I have very little faith in most so called mechanics these days, and for good reason. I might not feel this way if I was close to Eric, so use your common sense. A good example of being stupid would be to change only the spark plug on a missing cylinder. I think you get my point.

Perfect Japanese design, " you take me to dealah on regular schedule or I commit suicide. Ritual Japanese solution " Excellent deductive reasoning and taking your time to find the fault. I would have repaired it the same way. For a 2005 car it is the only economical repair. You should be good on fuses for another 3 years. Any possibility you could show with permission of course the customers reaction to the repaired vehicle in future repair videos? Merely curious. Actually they can be considered security videos to protect your business and the customers vehicles against any claims the repair wasn't done or completed correctly. And if you posted signs in your shop stating that the shop and grounds are being recorded 24/7 that should cover your business and personal. Just thinking out loud. Thanks for you time and effort in making and posting these videos. Cheers!

I suppose option 3 would have been to grab a connector from the scrap yard and solder it in. Still probably too much labour to pay a garage for but something I might do on my own car if I really wanted to keep it stock. On a rust bucket that's not likely to survive its next MOT I'd just do what Eric did.

Chances are corrosion in the connector caused an increase in resistance with a corresponding voltage drop and a nice well overheated plastic body. The green crusties achieved their objectives once again and brought the vehicle to a halt. The fault lies in the connector design not being suitable for extreme conditions. The throttle body needed a clean out, badly. Tricky to diagnose from an unknown history viewpoint which made the repair all the more commendable.

The size of the connector and its contacts determines the current and voltage carrying capacity. It's completely obvious the small connectors they used could never reliably carry that amount of current for those devices. Any oxidation or corrosion would immediately cause enough resistance (with a resultant increase in current) to melt the entire assembly as it did. It's a factory design defect and what you did to correct should be done on all of these vehicles or, possibly use a Cinch-Jones connector with much larger contacts. www.belfuse.com/product-detail/industrial-cinch-jones-plugs

You requested opinions. Here's mine. Your repair was fine no problems. I probably would have considered installing Weather Pack connectors instead of soldering. These connectors are exceptionally easy to install - even compared to the solder and heat shrink method. I keep Weather Pack kits in the shop for quick access. I also would have separated the highest current circuit (the fan) into a separate connector. Love your channel. I learn something every day.

It is so impressive you are consistently able to distill a multisystem problem down to a specific diagnosis in such a short time. Your workflow, to choose a simple circuit and look to where it points, seems to work great. Whenever I find a confusing problem the first thing I think of is a bad ground, but that doesn't get me as quickly to a connector the way your work flow does. I especially like the way you practically solve the problem without ordering an expensive connector from the dealer, waiting for days, and pissing away the customers money. Practical solutions are so much more useful for those of us who drive old cars.

When they would run drills, those sirens would blare and you could see the big doors open up over the missile batteries and watch the missile launcher rise out of the silo. They never announced a test ahead of time so we had to just hope that it was another routine drill and not the real thing; SCARY. You younger folks don't remember the Cold War. I had a car where the dash fuse kept blowing and couldn't tell how fast I was going, took ages to find without the schematics, (before the internet was common) eventually tracked it down to a data port cable the handbrake had literally cut right through. The tape holding the cable to the housing of the hand brake had lost it's stickiness letting it flop about under the ratchet. That was a painful one.

One of the things I really appreciate is how you always do a proper job fixing things, but realize that doesn’t always mean going back to new. I had a similar issue, the place wanted to replace the wire harness due to a bad metripack connector of some sort in a $1500 car with multiple issues, before working the rest of them, which for all I knew, could mean junking the car. I told them I would be there in 30 minutes. I showed up with my weatherpack kit, cut the factory one out, and had it replaced with weatherpack connectors in 20 minutes. You should have heard them whining and crying because it wasn’t the “proper” connector. It’s sealed, it’s a connector, it’s a $1500 beater, give me a break.

Really enjoy your videos. Nice to see someone that knows what they are doing. I don't work on cars much anymore cause I'm old. LOL. Nice to see someone that doesn't just replace parts to see if that fixes the problem. Wish I could find a good mechanic in my area. Auto dealer is stupid price in CA. Keep them videos coming.

Thank-you for another educational video. You have a great approach and make tough problem solving understandable. I used to solder but have migrated to crimping bare-butt-connectors followed by adhesive-lined heat shrink. Insulated crimp connectors are quite unreliable but uninsulated ones can be really strong and reasonably quick, and don't crack and corrode like soldered connections can. Thanks again!

Your a Hell of a mechanic! Great videos- I've learned a ton by simply watching. Of course it helps to have the proper tools to diagnose problems in today's cars...lol. without the scan tools we be lost these days& repairs would be much more lengthy.

Just saw this one today, excellent diagnosis and repair. As you say, fuses just don't blow for no reason, especially the new ones like on this car. I've tried to tell folks that for 40 years, it's almost always a fault that takes out a fuse. Great video, thanks Eric.

Super trouble shooting and thank you for the think through process. Electrical is a hard topic to understand on the cars. The fix was the best way on that car, ordering the connector would be the long way to the end. I'm with you on this one. Thanks Eric.

Another good video Eric. I believe you had the correct call on soldering the wires. If you replace the connector you have to solder twice as many connections (or attach pins and sockets) and you didn't gain anything. Plus between the tape and heat shrink the wires are protected from any more damage.

Good vid, I know it's an older one! I worked in automotive for around 18 years as a writer and service manager, got out about 3 yrs. ago. It's fun to watch the proceess of a good tech diagnosing an issue (I know, I'm a gear-head). You did exactly what I would have recommended with age and mileage of the vehicle. Good mechanics are hard to find, especially with electrical skill, great job! This one got me to subscribe, thanks for taking the time.
