Mongo Man You ever thought why any vehicle break down because of poor maintenance by the owner? The reason why any vehicle has problems because the owner doesn't take care of it. When you take care of the vehicle and change the oil on time, the vehicle last longer. Don't drive the same vehicle everyday, that's how parts wear out faster. You can own as many cars you want and they'll last forever.

I own a F-150 XLT 5.4 L Triton with over 200K miles that will run rings around your Silverado! If you take care of your vehicle, it'll out live the owner. All vehicles have issues due to the nature of mechanical devices. If all you want is a smooth ride on a highway, buy a Silverado. However, if you want a truck that can take the rigors of hard work, on and off the road, then the F-series trucks are your answer. Don't let this dumb video scare you off. Do your research before you buy and you'll know what I'm saying is accurate.

You’re welcome. If it starts making a lot of noise and sounds like a diesel, it means your cam phasers are going bad. Only full synthetic oil change every 5k miles. We have owned it since 2005 with low miles. 2008.5-10 Triton are actually good besides if you don't change the oil and destroy your timing chain guides.

Chevys are very reliable drivetrain wise its just the body of the trucks are built cheaper than fords.

Half this information is wrong. The phasers are just a symptom. The real problem is the oil pump, or more specifically the backing plate on the oil pump. The backing plate is aluminum, it flexes under higher rpms allowing oil to escape back into the oil pan, starving the top end. Lack of oil pressure also causes the chain tensioners to fail (they work off oil pressure) causing chain slapping and guides to break apart. Running thicker oil is beyond stupid, the oil ports in various parts are too small, get easily clogged by thicker oils and will cause issues for the cams, cam bearings and rockers/lifters. Thicker oil is pouring salt on a wound. As a long time 5.4 owner, these are the most common issues: Oil pump, cop's, plugs, passenger manifold cracks, fuel pump control module, window regulators quit working and one of the rarer known issues is the overdrive band or reverse band cracking. The 5.4 is an excellent motor if maintained and I personally know people with 300-500,000+ miles on theirs, currently. After all, the 5.4 IS a million mile motor despite it's issues.

@hoohoohoblin 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I told the kid who owns the truck to read your comment. It is his first vehicle. His transmission is having problems in overdrive, so I hope it isn’t too difficult or expensive to fix. It sounds like putting in a better aftermarket oil pump is the first thing someone should do if they get one of these trucks.

I just bought a 07 F150. I'm a ASE tech and I had a 2005 Mustang with a 4.6 that I replaced all the timing parts and oil pump. Changed the spark plugs and broke 2 off. But I had the tool to get them out, Never once I ever heard of head removal to get the broken spark plug out. My son is a tech at Ford and he has never heard of it either. As for the trans it will last if you don't run the shit out of it like any other vehicle. Seen 04-08 hit 300,000 miles b4 it went on its last leg. They are very good engine if you do your part and that refers to PM's. But the 1996 F250 7.3L Powerstroke I own will outlast all of them. I've heard of the head having to be pulled, but only in extreme cases where the extraction tool couldn't get the plug(s) out. I've got an 05 with a little over 207K. These engines are definitely better than what people give them credit for. I'm just starting to get the phaser rattle so I'll be doing the timing and a HV oil pump here soon. I've also had a stutter from 1st to 2nd, gonna pull the valve body and check the bearings as I've heard they can cause that issue. Otherwise, it's been an excellent truck. What gets me is that these engines are so good for towing. Not winning any races, but they get the job done. Really shocked me when I learned the 5.4 makes more torque than a 5.0 till around 4200 rpm. I really like my truck and I hope to keep it going for at least another 150-200K miles.

@@Anth230 Depends what you're looking at, it is not financially viable because at that mileage you've got to replace all the joints on the suspension no matter how free of rust they may be, you have to do the vacuum lines because the 4WD will likely go out without it and other systems will likely fail, you got to get a full brake service when the abs likely goes haywire, add that to the trans, all new engine timing and gaskets and coils and fuel injectors and stuck spark plug service, on top of that you'll also will need to do exhaust service because the area where the pipes join the Triton are known to go bad and crack through. Now all of this will need to be done regardless of how well it has been taken care of and the simple fact is that anyone selling one of these trucks for a fair price will not have done any of that unless they like to loose money, every used car listing will have the vast majority of these things left undone and all of them will eventually cause failure. The labor cost on all of what I listed is 5k minimum and at the end of the day all you will be left with is a truck that will have little to no resale and will have a dated and crappy mid 2000's ford interior. These 04-08 F-150's are absolute money pits no matter how you turn it. Get a newer used Ford truck.
@Anth230

@@jayhawker03 I doubt all that stuff would need to be replaced at once. Like the exhaust. Not just talking about this particular vehicle. But consider the fact that a base 4x4 is about 30k. A new engine and trans is not gonna cost anywhere near that.

das 1988 Well consider that on average a 2010-2014 f150 can be found selling for 5-7k more than one of these, with all that stuff waiting to go bad especially at that age and mileage it doesn’t make any sense not to just save and get something better. This gen f150 has always been weak heck any Ford Edge could totally lap this thing so at that I don’t see why anyone would by this truck, it’s not reliable and it’s been underpowered since day one (according to Kelly Blue Books official review) it seems like anyone who’s buying one of these is just buying a truck to have a truck and that’s how you get into stupid financial decisions

You better believe It, I worked for G.M. for many many years, Fact is Ford is King, Saying G.M. is better means you got a whole lot to learn about trucks and you are giving just your opinion and not facts, don't get me wrong, both of these companies have the capability of building top-notch Trucks, that's no secrete, the quality put into these vehicles are decisions made by the company that builds them, it's the decisions made that matters, what they put into their trucks is what you get! deciding to put the quality in whether it be the bolts and screws, plastic or metal, regular engine or stronger engine, etc is when you get the best truck, so don't sell neither one of these companies short when it comes to their capabilities they are both genius in what they do! for me, I buy from the company that listens to what I want in a truck, builds a solid truck that I can depend on, and that's Ford! That's No Brag That's Fact!

Another little problem with the 2001 thru 2009 Ford F-150 is with the drivers seat material wear out on the left side of the seat, from getting in and out of the truck all the time. This only applies to non-leather seats. if you decide too replace that portion of your drivers seat make sure you replace with either a heavier canvas type material or even leather or pleather type material I personally went with a strip of leather. If you do that, you will no longer have that problem. Take care. Hawk out!!

You’re welcome. The engine on the truck in the video blew up a few months ago, and the kid ended up putting a rebuilt engine in it. You can get a rebuilt engine for one of these with all of the factory defects fixed for about $3000, and if you don’t know how to install it yourself, you have to pay somebody to put it in as well. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have a truck that runs forever though.

Lisle tools has a much better extractor than does Ford . It gets them every time . But if you follow the Ford instructions on how to take the spark plugs out , no problem . You remove the coils, barely crack each sparkplug about 1/8th turn . Pour in some carburetor cleaner into each plug well . let soak in over night . Slowly remove spark plugs . I used PB Blaster myself and it works great . Move the plugs back and forth a little as they are coming out . In other words up a little , down a little , up some more , down a little to help keep from breaking off the plug tip.
