Can't believe it's been almost 10 years since I bought my 1997 F-150 XLT from original owner. 118,000 miles, body and paint like New, she paid $3,000 for the camper shell, and $27,000 for the truck in 1997. Needed a brake job, tires, and new front end parts bringing the total to $7,500 I paid. I have never loved a vehicle as much as I do this truck.

I would buy one, pick it up for the right price and fix stuff as it comes up. They're solid as far as the frame, body, etc. but have some spots that are known to fail which have been updated with much more reliable components and there are maintenance steps that can be taken to prevent these issues. If I could find a nice one for $4k or less I'd buy one.

I have a 2007 Ford F-150 XLT Triton with a 4.6 liter 8 cylinder engine that had a rough beginning when I bought it. To elaborate, I bought my truck a year ago from a generic used auto dealership in Connecticut and things went to shit soon after driving it home and I've took it to an actual Ford dealership the next day to get it checked out. To my disgust and disbelief, my truck had well over 4 dozen errors which amounted to $4200 in repairs and I wanted to give those fuckheads in Ansonia a piece of my mind for making false claims about the vehicle, nearly put my and other lives in danger; the truck's engine caused an unsettling shakiness which could've made my truck explode and to add insult to injury, they expected me to pay them to fix it upon purchase; which DOESN'T make any sense as it is contradicting in various ways, so I'm quite pissed off about it. Well, when the time comes to resolve the situation once and for all, I will see that an example will be made out of them so that NO one gets ripped off and used dealerships think twice about crossing people like me; I'll make sure of it.

you are a treasure box of information to help the DIY and truck buyers, thank you. I have to express my disgust with Ford for apparent lack of engineering which is what led to most of the topics you covered in this video. And it makes it worse when you comment that the fix for the failed part is the"latest and greatest replacement part" which with the changes in design of these parts is outright admission from Ford that the original parts were inadequate. I get so tired of a screwing by big business.

Back in 2010 I bough a 2004 single cab FX4 with a leveling kit, 33 inch bfg all terrains, and a brush guard with 50k miles on it for 9k dollars. I sold the car for 11k after driving it for 6 months. I regret selling it. It drove so nice. Only issue was the driver window came off its track and was 30 bucks to replace myself. Best truck I ever owned but gas was ridiculous. I was commuting an hour each way to work each day and using it in my off time. Sometimes my gas bill would be in the 500s weekly. Gas was expensive at the time.

YUP! I have a plug that will not come out on my 99', 5.4!!! We're affraid to pull it because if it sheers, we're into pulling the head since there is no physical way to get back there for a heal-a-coil! So, even with the better top end on the triton motor, the arrangement was designed by morons. Just so you know, we are over 560,000 miles on that motor and it's still running without burning more than 1/2 pt for 1,500 mi.s..... A tribute to Ford 4.6 and the original 5.4...... Then Ford decided to design the 5.4 for obsolescence. They did a fine job of that. Most the second generation 5.4's were pulled or top ends rebuilt as part of massive warranty issues. I will not buy a new truck until the 5.0 and ecoboost engines are proven. GM and Dodge are still building junk. What can a union guy do to find a decent rig these days? We are so screwed.

Strut/spring replacement is very straighforward. If you have an air compressor, and a strong 1/2" drive impact gun, it's an easy diy repair. Brian did a video on it, very helpful and comprehensive info. Pay attention to the lower bolt retorque procedure with vehicle weight on suspension so you don't destroy lower bushings on new struts.

Great info. I hope Ford has a engineering group that focuses on mitigating the effects of the awful road salt/brine. One could argue that dumping that stuff on our roads creates more safety issues long term than what it addresses by helping melt ice and snow.
@keithusaf1
@keithusaf1 5 жыл бұрын
Here in MA they're not using just salt or sand. The mix of goo is unknown. They very rarely plow the roads anymore. They "pre-treat" when a storm is approaching and then continue to dump the chemical mix. I've tried in vain to wash this garbage off my F150 at the car wash with no luck! It takes several heavy spring rains to wash away the road "salt" in the spring. Thank you so much for another excellent video!

I bought my 07 new and just rolled 81K miles. I dealt with the IWE for almost 11 years. Had it in 3 different ford dealerships when it was still under warranty at least 5 times and they could never figure out what was wrong, they replaced the solenoid with the upgraded cover and the vacuum lines. The "grinding noise" remained at times while driving. So last year i finally said i was going to fix it if it came down to replacing every component in the IWE system. I replaced the hubs, the check valves, and finally threw on another (now the 3rd) solenoid and it finally is fixed. After 11 years, cost me about $300. Your videos assisted with all the work ive done and ive learned alot about doing my own minor repairs. Thank You!

First gotta say your videos inc. timing chain/pump/phasers/4x4/trans + more have been the only reason the truck I bought for $1200 which was way too much in hindsight, is now my daily driver. But I have a symptom on my 2004 f150 5.3 that hasn't been addressed by anyone anywhere. When city driving almost at exactly 1200rpm steady pedal the truck begins to surge by dropping about 100rpm over and over until I increase throttle or drop below a 1000rpm. 270,000kms accelerates smoothly, idles smoothly in drive but in park or neutral slight vibration. Used a ford timing kit except the vct valves. Have a code 0430. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time to do your vids they gave me great confidence and allowed me to successfully complete those repairs.

You can't buy ANY vehicle that is trouble-free, what Brian does is give excellent insight as to the common issues to look for and what is involved in fixing them. I've had better experiences with Fords than I have with any other brand (other than my old Mazda, which was owned by Ford at the time) and have found that dealing with a few little issues here and there results in a better overall ownership experience than any other vehicle. Ignorance is the biggest issue to any Ford hater.
@tedjones-ho2zk
@tedjones-ho2zk 5 жыл бұрын
@@406Steven Its not ignorance is knowledge of the poor engineering of some of the newer fords. One example is 1500.00 to change a water pump on a V6, because its buried under the chain cover and the pump is driven by the timing chain. How about all of the Mustangs with engine ticks and or blown engines, again due to poor engineering. As for being a Ford hater, I have owned many Fords but I would not buy a new one.
@406Steven
@406Steven 5 жыл бұрын
@@tedjones-ho2zk The water pump issue on the V6s is only a recent internet thing because these engines are finally reaching the mileage (200K+ in most cases) where the water pump needs replaced. It's timing chain driven, sure, but not by any means something that's a regular or catastrophic failure--merely something that needs done every 10 years or so. It's only something you here about because the all-knowing internet finally found something they can bash Ford about--they're the Donald Trump of automotive manufacturers so if they forgot to brush their teeth in 1993 you can be sure to hear about it, as someone who deals with the real world and real life situations I'm not too worried about having to replace a water pump every 200k miles. The valve train tick in the 5.0s has been around since their inception, the early fix from Ford was to put heavier oil in them to fix it and even the newer cars seem to benefit from it. As far as failed engines as a whole they're below the curve so I'm not worried about it, as long as their actual replacement rate is down there with the likes of Toyota I'm fine with the 99% of them that never need anything but regular servicing.
@tedjones-ho2zk
@tedjones-ho2zk 5 жыл бұрын
@@406Steven Its not 200k miles before replacement, its under 100k before replacement and closer to 75k when the bearing fails. The failure is mostly caused by the insufficient size of the bearing assembly. My neighbor had a Ford Expedition and with just 10 years of use before the frame was rotted out and I can't count how many times he changed the coil packs. My brother had a F150 and he lost steering due to a ball joint coming apart, and that was only a four years old truck. Also the spare tire fell off because of a poor designed cable holding it. Ford quality what a joke.

I must say - You can either scare the shit out of someone buying these trucks. OR Make someone feel better about buying one. I've been turning wrenches for 35 yrs. Mostly Chevy - then everything when I worked in a shop. That being said - I have not worked on anything newer than a 2000 model. So most of the fuel injection & computer stuff was still pretty crappy at that time. The big boys were still figuring it out. Now I just work on & build engines for vintage Air-cooled VW's & my own vehicles. I was doing research as I was looking to buy an F-150. I had found 3 local trucks. 2006 - 2007 & 2008 / I came upon one of your videos. I must add - you seem to really know your S**T !!!! Very informative - you break everything down. They rust away before the warranty expires on the drive train in states that use a lot of road salt in the winter. I have 50 year old cars and truck frames that look far better than a 6 year old Ford. This is from a used car dealer that sees many hundreds of cars almost weekly.

I’ve been watching your videos since 2012. In 2012 I owned a 2005 F-150 King Ranch. At that time it had 110,000 miles give or take 5k. I drove the truck to 135,000 and sold to a friend. He drove it about 10,000 when it started getting the knocking sound right after start up. Shortly after the engine was totaled. I now have an 07 with 83,000+ miles and would like to keep this thing running for at least 200,000 miles. I change the oil frequently and the engine looks clean from what I can see. Im wondering if I brought this truck to your shop and left it to go through from top to bottom… how long would it take to fix all the known issues with this motor and truck. I’m thinking I should be proactive and have all the know engine problems repaired and all the other issues you mentioned checked. The thing is, the truck was owned by an elderly man in Houston Texas until 3 years ago. I purchased $16000 at 61,000 miles. It’s been in an accident. The previous owners was side swiped on the freeway. Basically both sides of the trucks sheet metal was repaired or replace. I worked in a body shop for several years before I became an airline pilot. The body work was an 7 out of 10… or a Firm “C” grade of thinking about school. The truck still smells new inside, hard to believe. I think it’s worth saving. Help me and your audience understand what you would most likely do in my case assuming great condition and low mileage. Would you run until it crashes then replace the motor and transmission…. Or would you make the recommended repairs now? Which would make the most financial sense?
