For whatever it's worth, Valspar makes an oil based paint, similar to Rust-oleum, but the Valspar product can be tinted any color you want. If you go with Rust-oleum, you have to pick from about a dozen or so standard colors, and that's it. The Valspar stuff is called Anti Rust Armor. I welded up a utility trailer and used the Valspar to paint it the same color as my truck. Took the gas filler door off, went to Lowe's, and they color matched it with their machine. I was very happy with the result.

Looks good for DYI Couple of small tips Once you turn your fan on.... start a draft..... leave the fan running the whole time' if not you're starting up a new draft / sudden burst of flowing air which will result in more trash/dirt in your paint job. Also leave the exhaust fan running several hours after you finish painting to prevent gas off/ chemical release settleing back on the paint resulting in solvent pop.

Painting with these heavy oiled enamel paints you need the old canister paint guns made for this type heavy enamel paint. Top Loader newer style paint guns are made for much thinner acrylic type paints. You can't thin it down enough to spray correctly through top loader, I have tried. It will spatter small globs and orange peel a major problem also, no matter how thinned down you get it.. You'll be wet sanding a lot to get it smoothed out and shiny. Old canister paint guns are made for oil based enamels and lead based heavy thick paints. They spray a great pattern, easy to use with no splatter, or orange peel. A nice shiny wet look even dry. You can see it on the truck above in picture the orange peel and spatter.

@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS yes, I would probably give it at least a week as well considering it seems like rustoleum seems to take longer to harden. Although I have never used acetone to mix with it. I’ve always used mineral spirits. It seems like the acetone might allow it to dry quicker.

It looks great. How long does the Rustoleum paint take to cure? Also, can you clear-coat over the Rustoleum using Duplicolor Paint Shop Gloss Clear, and how long should you wait before applying it?
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS27 күн бұрын
If you add hardener into the Rust-Oleum paint it will cure out in 24 to 48 hours typically I would not recommend adding or using duplicolor paint shop clear it has no UV protection and tends to fall apart after a couple of months. I highly recommend something like finish one urethane clear coat or if you're looking something you can spray without having to mix they make spray max 2K clear in a spray can that works great with Rustoleum thanks for watching!
