Ford Factory Cooling System Flush Procedure for 6.4 Power Stroke with VC-9: IHWOC Episode 11

Today I'll show you how I went about doing the shady-tree version of the Factory Ford Coolant flush procedure for the 6.4L Power Stroke.
7:30 - Don't connect the battery terminals yet, just throw the battery in as hard as you like.

These gloves are fantastic. After going through Mechanix and the "good" Harbor Freight models and learning that expensive gloves don't actually last all that long, these here are a great alternative. Also great for handling brush like Manzanita. They're semi-disposable, so you get a pack of 12 pairs, and a single pair lasts about half as long as an expensive set of gloves do for the same price.

Your commentary is pure gold. God rest diesel tech Ron. Taken too soon. Thank you for your videos. I did the flush back in 2014 and replaced the gold sand coolant with Cat elc coolant. Same with my fuel cooler. 211xxx trouble free miles. 6.4l are prissy beaches and need strict maintenance. Completely deleted mine the day I bought her. Spartan tuner, intake, 4” turbo back exhaust. Oil and filter every 5k. Both fuel filters every 10k. It’s paid off and been a great truck. Saving up for a KDD 6.7l steel piston engine for the ol girl when she gives up the ghost. 20k is crazy but 650-750hp and 1000 ft/lb torque with reliability of a 7.3 is worth it. A lot less than a 80-90k new truck.

You crack me up every time I watch your video! I also have to laugh at Ford’s coolant system cleaning procedure. If it you took it to a Ford dealer and have them do this they would charge you $1000 for all the time and products it needs to do this flush.

Between steps 4 and 5: When reinstalling radiator hose, degas bottle, ect, did you reinstall the egr clamp and bracket for the 1hour idle (plus hour ride) or leave those off till the thermostats went back in?

I’m at 300k miles with my 6.4 and I’m about to do a flush and likely an oil cooler. It’s a tough decision. Do I spend the time and effort or just toss it? I know it’s not long before it pulls a Bluesmobile style breakdown. I’ve driven it for 150k. Bought for 19k about 8 years ago. Has been a solid truck with few issues up to this point. Decisions, decisions.

Is the coolant refiller kit necessary? Whats the alternative method

Pretty necessary. I mean you could try it with manual burping, but with these modern cooling systems with every hose, nook and cranny everywhere, good luck getting all the air out in anything that resembles a timely manner. It's not that expensive and saves a lot of headache, not just for this project, but for every one afterward.

It's been in the shop trying to get it's new KDD motor for 15 months (it blew up shortly after I made these videos), so... I'm not sure if it's technically mine still considering the shop has had it longer than I've owned it :D

It takes 5-6 months to have a KDD motor built, the rest of the time has been the backlog of the shop and back-ordered parts.
