The 2017-2018 Ford Focus Electric (last two years before it was discontinued) has a larger battery pack and CCS charging with great thermal management. Rated 115 miles (realistic in warm weather), and has a really good DC charging profile that doesn't taper until high 80% or low 90% range. I have 38,000 miles on my 2017. It's a pretty nice car. We also have a Model 3. Nobody knows this car exists, Ben, don't feel bad.

True story... the reason I bought my first EV back in 2017 (the Fiat 500E and then the Bolt) was because a good friend had this car, a Ford Focus EV and he showed me how much money I could save driving an EV. He did a burn out (front wheel drive) pulling out of my driveway and I was sold. Hahahaha

Love this car. I leased a 2013 focus electric for 3 years and loved it. I then leased a 2017 focus electric and love it even more! The lease just ended and I bought the car. The 2017 and 2018 have a bigger battery than previous models (33.5kwh battery vs 23 kWh) and it has 50kw DC fast charging in addition to level 1 (110 volt ) and level 2 (220 volt) charging capability . Older models didn’t have DC charging available. It’s amazing for 99% of my daily use needs and with DC charging I can take it on longer journeys. It’s reliable and affordable and doesn’t pollute. Maintenance requirements are only wiper blades and annual tire rotations! It seats 5 and the rear seats can fold down. Used 2017s can be had at less than $20,000 Canadian with low mileage. Plus it has a 8 year 160,000km battery warranty! All focus evs have a liquid cooled and heated battery (unlike the leaf) for longer range and battery life. No brainer for drastically cutting your monthly fuel and maintenance bills. Highly recommended. Feel free to message me with any questions.

I fell into the idea of a Tesla M-Y but our new Dodge has some controls on a screen and going through the menus got me and my wife to give up on it! I almost bought the Y but the fit and finish scared me long enough to realize we don’t even want any new gas cars with screens! Even though we can easily buy any car we are stuck with low end cars with less screens! Maybe more cars will go back to wiper switches and seat heat buttons etc. I see many people complaining about the problems with screens so we shall see!

What a coincidence! We just purchased a 2017 Ford Focus Electric; we pick up the car on Saturday! It has a much longer range, as well as DC fast charging. Here in Canada, where cars only last about eight years before they fall apart due to rust, most EVs make little to no sense financially. The FFE is the only vehicle on the market that does. If you think I’m exaggerating, the only other somewhat viable option was a 2016 Kia Soul EV that had been used as a taxi, had almost 200,000km on it, and was selling for $12,000, keeping in mind that a 2016 in Canada has four years left before it’s an unsafe rust heap.

I then realized a few years later that a used Tesla Model 3 was in my price range and now will never consider another ICE vehicle again. My next car will be a used Model X. I don't need a van or pick up but eventually these will also be available as an EV. I encourage anyone looking for an EV to consider the used car market which is another path forward towards sustainability. BTW, a used i3 is also very affordable and a great little car with generous range.

Nathan is for sure not wrong here however when you get out of the California bubble into the smaller cities and rural areas of middle and southeast US then it gets a little more challenging to drive low range, affordable EVs. My city only has a handful of level 2 chargers in town and zero L3 chargers but I drove a Spark EV for one year and just couldn't make it work for my lifestyle. Due to the limited range learning curve, I've made it home to 0 miles left a couple times, once to the bottom of my driveway where I had to use an extension cord to charge it. The issue for some people might come to the point of unplanned trips which can eat away at the range quickly. In the southeast, if you don't live in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, etc. then EA or EVgo or ChargePoint will overlook your market when considering new CCS chargers which makes traveling from city to city a nogo. No beach trips, no trips to the mountains, no trips to a pro sports game, no concert trips. With the Spark, I've had to leave my car at a public charger for hours and catch a ride home from family and friends instead of sleeping in the car. So now I gave up the Spark EV for a much pricier i3 Rex then currently to a Bolt. Living in California with chargers all over the place is the best way to experience life with an EV. The bottom line is charging companies and cities need to make life easier for everyone else in the US or makers need to come out with sub 10-15k cars with at least 250 range.

I'd look into the used Chevy Bolt, I've seen them going for as low as $15k so they may get down there in a couple years.

Bolt or Volt. Volt isn't rage limited at all but has 50 miles of electric. If you don't drive 200 miles all the time you make up the extra cost on gas. A Bolt would save on both gas and ICE maintenance.

There are for sure FFE's in Canada. There aren't many of them overall, I think Ford sold a little over 10,000 of them.

Has anyone looked into how batteries are made and the strip mining that it takes to get the lithium or the effects of after the batteries die

What is the battery life expectancy? Degradation?

If Ford brought this car back, I’d be pretty tempted to trade in what I got now.
