My car(2013 Ford Focus SE) just did this to me and I got stranded in the middle of nowhere miles from home.. Fortunately I had Triple A and i was able to get it towed to my local ford dealer. I was scared because this was the first time i had this issue, but then i went on some forums and 10's of thousands of people were having this same problem. I had no idea that there was a recall or a extended warranty on this part. Thank God this didn't malfunction on the highway. It's up to us as drivers to keep each other updated on these issue's and recalls because Ford does a shit job at getting the word out. -Subbed and liked~S7G

Just got my letter about this from Ford a few days ago. Lo and behold, the car stopped dead last night. Got it towed to the dealer and saw the letter on the table when we got home. Sure enough, our TCM is gone. So glad this is under warranty. Thanks for the video. I had no clue what it could have been last night and only assumed the worst.

Thanks very much for all the info on these DCT boxes. My 2012 DCT was jerking and a couple of knocks (I was hearing a 'chaff' sound for a split second and delayed engagement every time trying to pull away), so I was about to take it to dealer next day to check it out. On way home at a four way stop, I went to pull away, and it screeched at me and no movement. After a few attempts and screeches, the car gave me a transmission failure message on the dash. Awesome. After that, it eventually seemed to engage some form of safe mode (at a guess) then drove normally. Took it to the dealer, and initial diagnosis is unable to engage first gear (was screeching almost every pull away, then the trans failure message). They have told me I need an entirely new transmission costing thousands (at my expense). Epic. They told me code was p973F. So... my question is.. how on earth does an automated manual manage to break a gear? To me, something has gone wrong in the controller and messed it up.

+FordTechMakuloco I had to pay 5000 in the end. Ford corporate (Heather Culp and others ) told me they wouldn't help as I was the 2nd owner, but they would if I had been the original owner. I was ignored by corporate Ford and tried to be forgotten about. they deny any connection to the jerks, bangs as being related to the clutch or tcm. After sending my video evidence to them they didn't even bother to watch it. they offered no help whatsoever, no technical assistance. so at the end, you have a 5000 dollar black box, that you have to take the garages word that it is the issue and needs replacing.

My 2014 Focus with 19,000 miles has gone in REVERSE three times now while the gearshift is in the DRIVE position, including one injury to a pedestrian as the vehicle went backwards from a stop going up a slight hill in a parking garage. The last time was right after the 15B22 update. While driving forward at 40 mph, the vehicle flashed to "R" on the dash display, revved to 4500 RPM, then slowed to a stop (on a highway access road). I coasted to the side, turned the vehicle off and restarted. It erratically shifted into multiple gears and up and down on the RPMs. Dealer is diagnosing it as leaking seals - same seals they replaced 5 months ago in May. I am on my 46th day in the shop. They said they used seal kit EV6Z-7052-C previously, and now are using EV6Z-7052-A saying that it is an "updated design" from the one used in May. I'm also having issues with it idling rough at startup and when decelerating to a stop, and the tires spinning out from a stop as the transmission shudders then "clanks" into gear. Anyone have ideas?

Another symptom I have found with the TCM is a delay when cranking, up to 6 seconds. when testing this was a intermittant concern. I was able to reproduce this concern more often when locking/unlocking the car

Thanks for the video. I've been pretty clueless but have had the Hill Assist issue, clicking within the dash board, and maybe maybe shift problems too. I've taken in my 2015 Fiesta 3x in the 3yrs I've had it but I love it still. Thankfully I have a great rapport with my dealership. They just told me to bring it in whenever an issue pops up.

Mine a new 2013. It started with clutch shudder shifting from 1'st to 2'nd pretty soon into the 1'st year. I lived with it that way (probably a mistake), but didn't get worried until the 1'st notice about possible trans oil leaks, then the flash recall, then an actual failure of a shift adjuster (P0902 warning code). It still shudders, and now a 2'nd P0902 code, going back for repair (car now less than 40k). I complained both times before about the shuddering, but no attempt to fix that was made (I lack persistence). The dealer gave no clue about any issues with the model. I opted out of the action action because so far I would only get $50. Maybe after it fails a 3'rd time I can get legal help. The 3 issues that are common are a) fluid leak - wet clutch slip, b) dry slip due to inferior material on clutch (latest new clutch could fix this), c) solder crack - TCM communication issues, and of course outright failure of adjusters like I also had. A clutch with more than 250 ms of slip is out of spec and a dealer should be able to test that if they care at all (they don't)

This Friday was driving down the highway when out of the blue lost all gearing (like the car lost its programming on the transmission). the hillstart assist chime was going nuts. After safety pulling off the highway, It would not get into gear, then once i stopped the engine, could no longer turn it on. This was just after the dealer reprogrammed the transmission 2 weeks ago.

2011 Fiesta here...last year it was a throttle body replacement, now the battery, and then the car lost energy crossing a busy intersection and almost got hit by a truck. Engine light came on. Took to our local guy - TCM. Why pay local guy when Ford knows it's an issue and should cover it. Going tomorrow. Concern is that our local dealers tend to dance around this if it's not dead on arrival with all the codes firing. But this is is like Russian-Roulette. I've got several longer trips with airport and guests coming and do not want to be stuck somewhere. Praying Ford guy does the right thing and replaces it. We loved our car and got it bec we thought this would be Ford's best effort. But at 5-6 years old, it shouldn''t have all the problems it's had. I think I'm done with all the electrical stuff. Maybe going to buy an "old reliable" somewhere.

Hi thanks for the video. I just returned my 2011 fiesta to Ford for the third time with 92,000 miles. First time was for shuttering and eratic movement. The second time was for shuttering and the trans would not go higher than third gear. This time the trans is shuttering and the whole car shakes coming out of first gear. What if Ford fixes it temporarily again like they have been and the problems reoccur after the 100,000 mile warranty?

That's a lot better than Honda. They have mass transmission problems but rather than taking care of their customers they have forced one of the largest class action law suits in automotive history and are fighting it to the bitter end.

2015 1 liter 3 cyl ecoboost here....which only comes with a 5 spd manual so I'm all good....btw I have a very long commute starting in a few months so I paid for the 5 yr 100K extended warranty.

My 2014 Ford Focus's transmission failed 4 times (transmission and clutch). I hired a lawyer to file a suit against Ford for selling a lemon (Lemon Law). Now Ford is compensating me for this huge problem. I will never buy another Ford

Really appreciate the information. I have already replaced the transmission once in my 2011 Fiesta at my own expense. I was told the warranty did not extend to include my specific problem. Now I'm getting the error code U0073; control module communication Bus A. My shifter is locked, all the warning lights are on, the vehicle indicates it is not in park when it cleanly is and the vehicle will not crank. Initially the ignition had locked as well. Should this also be covered under the TCM extended warranty? Thanks.

I just got my car a 2012 ford focus del automatic in may or June. In August it started to mess up. The first issue was when I put in reverse and gave it gas it would not move. Put it back in park turned key off. Started it up and put in reverse again no problems.Next day or that evening I had let my sister use my car and she had took it to town and it acted like it was slipping and the check engine light came on. Along with transmission hot. Please turn off for 5 minutes ir something of that nature. I had knew about the tcm failing as when I bought my car I did recall checks. When it got to the dealer it was a bad tcm and was replaced under warranty. When I picked it up they said that the battery was dead.When I got home I tried to restart it. It was dead. And the negative battery terminal was extremely white! I almost wonder if the old battery was what made my tcm act up in the first place? I ended up spending the 120 and got a new battery. Haven't had issues since. My tip is to clean your battery terminal's especially the negative and or change out your battery and see if you don't experience any more problems.

Hi we have a 2012 Focus been in the shop multiple times for shudder. But worse its been in four times for complete loss of power. It will just start missing while drive and bam loss of accelerator and shifting. Ford has replaced TCM but they just cant get this fixed. +Fast Eddy If the TCM is new it is time to look at the engine harness and main engine ground which is the most common reason for many concerns with the trans on these vehicles especially your year. Now if the trans is neutraling out due to overheating that is another issue. I would say let the FSE come out and work their magic.

Can’t they just put a newer model of the transmission in ours. When I fill mine up to get gas, it stutters and jerks. When I come to a stop sign the speedometer goes down to 0 and shoots back up and the battery and oil light will turn on. I looked up my vin for the TCM but it doesn’t say a recall, it says Field Service Action. 14M01 and 14M02 and my focus won’t start. I’ve only had the car for 6 months. Wish I did my research before getting it.

On 10/27/2015 I took my 2012 Ford Fiesta to the dealership to have the "software update program 15B22" done to my car, due to all the erratic shifting problems, rolling backwards on hills, sometimes not engaging into gear, etc... Now here we are 3 weeks later and the A/C and heat unit will not work properly and the car is making a bad noise. Can this be related to what they did on the car for the control module software update?

+Aimee Winslow No the tcm update has nothing to do with the pcm's control of the a/c unless there are new codes set in the tcm which are not allowing a/c operation to stabilize the engine.

Two TCMs and two clutches later, I'm starting to have problems with my 2015 just shutting off at a light. Like it's engaged in gear, but when I try to proceed it cuts off. My local Ford dealership can't find any faults. It also sometimes will not go into reverse. It stays in neutral until I do a restart of taking the positive battery connection and letting it sit for 30 minutes.

We are a FORD family I am a Diesel mechanic with both 310 t and s licences .that started out at a FORD dealership 15 years total I worked there on Heavy trucks. I have a 2016 focus that won’t get out of second gear. Took to ford they replaced the clutch however it wasn’t shudder. I had it when I first got it and it shuddered got the clutch pack fixed under warranty and haven’t had the shudder really since at most some lag with first gear. Ford replaced the clutch now a second time and didn’t cure the loss of power. The current 0-60 time is about 25 seconds in comparison to when I bought it at about 8 seconds. Is the tcm going out? Why would ford replace the clutch and not the TCM. Actually they told me the reason I was losing power was because of a broken resonator. Wasted bunch of money fixing that. Then fixed the cat for like 700. Still drives horribly and like I said doesn’t want to shift out of second gear. Any thoughts and anywhere to point me to the right direction. Thanks. There are no check engine lights or warning lights. Only the p0420 after visiting the dealer.

I just had the replacement for the 3 time in 1yr. They changed the clutch and as they were taking it out, the brand new clutch burned out. So they had to change it again in that moment. I took it home and as soon as I got home I could smell the burning smell. Why? Is it a residue from the previous burnt clutch or should I take t back to change again? Plz I need answers!

It's mostly a software problem I believe as far as the shift shudder. Consider looking into something called Tom's tune. My car drives a lot better than it ever did stock with his custom tune. It's pricy but very much worth it. I wouldn't want to drive this car without it!

Angel Vera Yeah don't dont do it to yourself. My company provided Focus is annoying to drive. My daily driver is a 2012 Mustang. If your looking for sedans with reliability and good drive trains... stick to the Ford Fusion and Ford Taurus.

I have recently replaced the TCM on my 2012 Ford Focus and it seems to be shifting a little smoother than before. The only thing is that it still makes the crunching noises and shutters once in a while in the low gears. It doesn't bother me too much but I was wondering if its considered normal and do people still experience some of this even after replacing the clutch seals.

just got my 2014 ford focus se a month ago. It had 11,000 miles on it.. noticed hesitation and RPM going extremely high when I start to put my foot on the gas.. Took it to the dealership and they reset the computer and said it would take 100 miles to adjust to the way I drive... It has been past 100 miles and I still see NO change at all.. Does this transmission actually drive the way you typically drive or where they full of crap? They said my car was a rental car previously so it never adjusted to one driver.. my factory warranty ends in 2 weeks and I'm not sure what I should do... Queen Bee Go right back to them there is an obvious fault with clutch slippage like everyone else is having. Only good thing is you should have gotten a letter extending the clutch warranty.

The jerks are normal. I just bought a 2014 focus 4 months ago, now I have to replace the TCM already. Wish I never bought it. I am probably going to try to sell it as soon as I can get it fixed.

I have a late model 2015 Fiesta Sport 1.0 automatic Ecoboost here in Australia. Are you aware of any issues with the 1.0T engine? I have about 12000 kms on it and just noticed issues engine almost stalls whilst in traffic.

That's incorrect, as I own a focus with one-liter. Advantage of that engine is that you generally get 6F15 transmission rather than DPS6.

I got my Tcm fixed twice, it is now 2019 and I have 120 thousand miles on and I still have bad shifting, shutter shifting, and once my car went forward when I was in reverse almost making me crash into a parked car. Can I bring it back in and get it fixed again on warranty? I've never had so many problems with a new car, and honestly get kinda freaked out driving it

I am scheduled for clutch replacement and was wondering if they HAVE to change the seals as well or they can try without changing the seals? How do I email you so I can get the Ford TSB's for the 2012 ford focus hatchback automatic with loosing 5th and 6th gears, reverse, fail to start, etc. Guessing it's the TCM but the Ford dealership says it is not showing the codes even though they are sure it is the tcm. Would love to know your thoughts. Also they said they noticed low fuel rail pressure and the car occasionally takes 5-6 seconds to start once the key has been turned.

Hello! Thanks for your helpful vids. My girlfriend purchased a used 2013 Focus SE (52k miles) about two weeks ago and it today it broke down due to the TCM issues you describe. Do you think it's best to trade in the car and jump ship ASAP?? How far along have the software updates come in the past year and a half? Will she likely continue having these problems? Any one know if the P090C error code has anything do with this? Vehicle just boosted in RPMs when slowing down and the the engine light came on. Diagnostic tool pulled this code.

Hey Makuloco or youtube, i have a 2014 ford focus se automatic transmission with 15,750 miles on it. i recently just had the new recall clutch installed so my car doesn't jerk or stutter anymore on take off. Now my problem seems to be in the RPMs. At times it will jump to 4thousand RPMs when I'm only doing about 10 to 15 miles per hour on a casual take off from a stop sign. my car wants to jump out of first gear so fast as well as 2nd gear that it revs up to 2500, 3000 and up to 4000 just when I'm doing a basic stop and go. Is this a TCM problem?

I got completely screwed on the 14M01. My 2012 Focus started to shutter at 55K so I took it in. My car had been stolen earlier so after it was recovered and returned the title was branded. Now that the title is branded the very expensive fix is not covered by 14M01. Given the situation I wish Ford would work with me. I still have the car but it's a joke to drive and only has 63K miles.

hi, I know that this post is quite old, I am from the Philippines and I have the same model year of ford it is a fiesta, and right now I am facing this issue of transmission and my car is still in Ford maintenance shop, when I tried to explain​ to them regarding this issue they told me that the Philippines is not part of this powershift transmission settlement. my car was only 4 years old with 30,000 km of mileage. are we in the Philippines can be part of this compensation? hope someone can give an answer and thanks.

my clutch doesn't shudder and gears are fine, Had it new and now have 40,000mi. Still good... guess I got lucky??? im a ittle scared cause its an issue but my SE 14" is great.

I just picked my 2014 Ford Focus SE up from the dealership after they did a "shudder test". They said that they will need to replace the clutch after ordering the parts next week.... But now after they did the "shudder test" they made it worse... It was only a slight shudder before they took it in, now it is worse and has even started making a noise.. My question for you is, after they replace the clutch, does this fix the problem? Or is it only a matter of time before this happens again? I love the car otherwise, but I've only had the vehicle for 12days and having problems already makes me nervous😭

2012 Fiesta clutch replacement initially corrected the problem but it returned after 3 months. They said they also replaced a leaking bearing but the problem continued. I can't even sell it in it's present condition.

hey cant say thank you enough with the help you have given me with my vehicle. Got one problem that i cant figure out been searching and trying to research online and cant find anything on this issue. Drove my 2012 focus one day and couldnt go past 40 mph. It would take a while to gain speed from stop to go. check engine light came on got code p285e. Turned the car off and turned it back on light went away but was still pending. Took it for a drive and drove fine, but shift points don't feel right. Do you know what this code means?

The closest ford Dealer is on Mexico (4 hours drive) but I don't mind taking it down there to get it fixed, so far I experienced the issue when putting on reverse a couple times. HINESTROZA1 You would have to contact that dealer with it being in another country I am not sure. The warranties get funky even with the vehicles that travel between the US and Canada it gets a little tricky.

This extended warranty coverage will address intermittent symptoms of loss of transmission engagement while driving, no-start, or a lack of power. If a vehicle has already exceeded either the time or the mileage limits, this coverage will last through June 30, 2017. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

Hey Brian, thanks for posting these videos. Last year (June) my local dealer put the new seal pack and clutch in place on my 2011-2012 Focus. The fix worked well, fast forward to today experiencing the same shuttering in stop n go traffic that started to act up again recently. Maybe the seals are worn again, or this time the TCM? Will post here again after they check it out again this week.

Nelson Eng Just an update they did a reprogramming of the TCM. Still didn't seem to fix the low speed stuttering. Now noticing is mainly happens after a few miles after the car warms up when it starts happening more often when accelerating from a stand still. Is this the new norm for this transmission that you know of, or you think i should get a 2nd opinion from another dealer?

+Nelson Eng you're going to have to replace your clutch. The updated seals shouldn't be leaking. The reason the seals were replaced were because the seals wore out and contaminated the clutch with the fluid. The new seals shouldn't be a problem. The only problem you have is the clutch. These clutches are just junk to be honest. Within 5k-25k miles you'll need to replace it even after you replaced the clutch. A new TCM won't cause the shudder to go away.

Car not starting battery and starter tested good on 2014 ford focus se hatch had new trans installed mudule calibrated twice 36163 milieage but jumped it after that seemed ok clock reset itself at the time it did not want to start it sounded like um the module or something was trying to short out i guess it was an odd sound you think maybe tcm is acting stupid? And also the vacuum hard line was vibrating next to battery and car idled funny

Does this make sense to you. Took my 2000 Ford Escort over to have it looked at for the transmission solenoid the cost was going to be 250 to fix The person said that the cylinoide was fine but yet I can't get 4th gear due to a broken belt inside the transmission that would have to come out and get fixed. Now my question for you is if the car is giving me the code for the shift selenoid a but yet this guy saying the computer tricking itself to give this code when it's really a Belt inside the transmission would that make sense to you. I know you said it would be cheaper to do it myself and I'm just shopping around for other opinions do you by any chance have a diagram for the 2000 Ford Escort transmission to show me what exactly cylinoid they looks like. And the funny thing is this guy if he did take off the transmission pan would you not go ahead and change fluid and the filter for the customer

***** When he says belt he is referring to a band. Do some electrical testing to see if the solenoid is bad or not.

This a mechanical or functional failure of SS1 either it is the solenoid or the valve body itself either way the valve body must come down for inspection of the valves and a ohm check of the solenoid.
