Seeing as Ford knew they were selling a defective product, imo, the settlement doesn't go nearly far enough. The should be made to buy back all of them at sticker price, pay for all costs associated with the purchase and pay back all loan interest, plus a $10k inconvenience payout to the owners.

I live in Canada and drive a 2014 Ford Focus. They flashed my transmission 3 times, and told me I was driving the car too easy and need to drive it harder. Finally I bitch enough that the Ford dealer in Northern Ontario took the car in and changed the clutch pack, and the trick is that there are 2 seals that need to be changed, and the most inner seal is the seal that leaks the fluid onto the clutches which causes the slippage and jerking. Well it took the mechanic 5 hours to do the job. I had 20,000 KMs on the car when they did the transmission clutch pack, and SEALS. I now have close to 130,000 KMs and the car works perfect in all shifting. The trick is the inner seal...stop that leak and all is fine.

Heard/read somewhere, that the problem with Ford's dual-clutch trans., was that it used dry plate clutches (to save costs), while all the successful ones from other makes have multi-plate wet clutches.
@wills22624 жыл бұрын
I'm not completely familiar with the Ford DCT but I have some speculations: 100% the dry clutch design is much more difficult to get to the same levels of refinement over a wet clutch. In terms of shift refinement: manual transmission (least), dry DCT, wet DCT, dog clutch, planetary auto (best), there are reasons and debates around this, but lets keep focus on dry DCT. Think back to the days of driving a manual transmission, that's essentially a "human controlled" dry clutch DCT. Stop/go and creeping puts a lot of wear and tear on the clutch. For example, if you drove a manual transmission, would you constantly slip the clutch to inch forward? Likely no, but with the DCT it allows you to do it, generating heat (changing the friction coefficient) and physically wearing away the clutch material. Now, the friction coff, can't be directly measured nor can the clutch wear (i think). These 2 things need to be modeled fairly precisely to get a good shift, and guess what that's hard to do. Now let's say, you got that bang on. There's another part, remember modulating the gas pedal when driving a manual transmission? Well with a DCT the transmission needs a very accurate torque signal from the engine. That way the transmission knows when to apply the clutch along with the right amount of force. Too quick, driver gets jerked around, too slow more slipping/heat and reduced life. Finally, there are the mechatronics e.g valve body all transmissions have a delay from the time the electronic signals says "shift" and the solenoids get triggered, fluid gets sent to the clutch etc. those delays need to be modeled as well. I bet we will never know what the root cause was for this transmission. My best guess it's some combination of the above. All said, it's bitter sweet. I applaud any manufacture trying to meet FE requirements in a cost effective manner, helps provide people with mobility at lower cost, but based on the what I have seen out there, this design looks to be a miss, it's a shame too, the Focus and Fiesta DCT's provided some great fuel economy when operating as expected.

I have a 2012 Ford Focus and have had it for almost 6 years. It was the first car I ever bought myself and cost me over 18k in total, I paid off the car last year. I’ve had it repaired 8 times for the shuddering, and each time I had to fight them about having it fixed for free and get a rental car at no cost to me since it’s their fault I’m taking it to the shop and without a car every 10-12 months. They take their sweet time fixing it also, usually they have the car almost a week and say they have to ship in parts. You’d think they’d keep parts on hand since these cars are always being brought in for the same issue. I’ve been gaslighted by Ford multiple times and now I’m told it’s out of warranty because I passed 100k miles and it’s been over a year since the clutch was last replaced. I’ve been driving it hoping the problems don’t worsen and cause me to crash. I submitted for a buy back over a month ago and haven’t heard back yet. I’m really hoping it’s approved. I’ve had other issues with the car too such as the AC blows hot air only on the passenger side and this is a problem that’s happened to many other dual climate focus owners I’ve spoken to. Terrible car. Deplorable treatment from service reps, especially as a woman they treat me like I don’t know left from right. And not like I can sell the car, no one will buy it! Ford themselves quoted me a buyback value of a whole $500 a few years back. It’s almost laughable that they didn’t even want to buy the car because of the faulty transmission, yet they gaslight me and say there’s no problems when I try to have the issue repaired.

I purchased a 2013 Ford Focus Titanium on Carvana June 2023. I have a local Ford dealership in Mankato Minn tell me that they all shuddered and I'd simply had to get used to it, well it's October 2023 and the car does not engage reverse, 2nd 4th gear. So because of this gaslighting dealerships motive i missed the warranty on it, so im paying for a car that does not work. Mind you i changed the auctuator and still nothing and of course this dealership will gladly see the vehicle immediately charging 200.00 off the bat.

we purchased a 2012 fiesta brand new. the cars transmission shifted funny and made all kinds of noises. the dealer said just what you said (we have never heard anything about these transmissions) and after inspecting it they said there is nothing wrong with it, they are made that way. we took it in a couple times after that because it was getting worse and ford did nothing. we traded the car in soon after that, and not on another ford. we will probably never buy another ford after that experience.

When I went the state lemon law department in Tallahassee Florida, not covered for poor design. We received an small settlement by Federal lawsuit. Good to see a verdict opposing a big corporation with deep pockets looking to get out of a problem the easiest way possible. Ford likely thought they could "starve out" everyone long enough that they would give up on perusing the case eventually. Don't buy cvt transmission vehicles as from what I hear most dealers don't have the specialty tools to rebuild them at the dealership. Honda told a lady I know that her only option was to source a used cvt for her first gen Civic hybrid as the specialty tools needed would cost them a few grand just to be able to do the repairs in their dealership. With the 200k miles on her car and determined not to get rid of it because she loved it, I pulled the engine cradle out with the engine to swap the cvt out. The cvt is about half the size of a mini fridge you would have going to college and weighs less. The rubber belt tends to shread over time and the common cure is find a lower mileage used cvt. The dealer quoted $7k for a cvt including a lower mileage used unit to complete the repair. Before I took on changing the cvt, I voiced my opinion about spending good money on a loosing proposition by keeping the car. The additional work she also faced was needing a manifold - catalytic converter assembly via the dealer for $600 just to pass inspection and a future battery replacement that is behind the back seat as codes kept showing up if the vehicle wasn't driven daily to charge the failing big battery. All total if in great condition, that car at best was worth $7k in excellent condition but hers was high mileage and maybe good at best for appearance condition with the paint, body and overall condition etc. She was determined to spend the money and keep driving it which I did as she requested. My opinion on hybrids, mileage may be awesome in the beginning but just wait until you need a transmission or you have to go to the dealer for them to order a main battery costing thousands and then pay for it to be disposed of. The great mileage savings just tanked with your bank account balance once you had no choice to pay what the dealer wants to fix it. Price per mile for hybrid vs regular vehicle over the average time a driver keeps their vehicle may just baffle you with which spent far more of your money in the end. It's ok, spend all your green so you can say you are driving green. 😁

@@DANNYCOULSTON Well this is the Getraig (sp) transmission, same as the manual transmission in the F series trucks, when that was an option. So I did some learning about these dual clutch transmissions, turns out that they are an automated manual, and they need to be driven in a specific way to ensure the longevity of the clutch, driving like a regular automatic transmission will kill the clutch, such as creeping forward in traffic, big problem with these, so some driver education on this system might have been a good idea for ford to do. Dual clutch transmissions are a good performance transmission, not really good for run of the mill commuting vehicles.

At least one KZbin video in the last year or two claims to show a fix for the dual-clutch transmission problem. It involves improving the electrical grounding of the transmission electronics. Cars that had been reflashed (reprogrammed) without success supposedly behave as the engineers intended after the grounding is improved. The video that I saw also claims that the electrical grounding in production vehicles is not as good as it was on the pre-production prototypes. It's disconcerting that this simple fix that might have cost less than $50 per vehicle could have avoided Ford spending hundreds of millions of dollars in a court settlement.

A little over midway through the video, Steve addresses the main issue to me: “How does this type of problem get in to the car before it is sold?” So, internally, some Ford people warned that this problem may be so intractable that there is no fix, and the company still pushed forward? This is where all those corporate “values” and mission statements seemingly get thrown out the window? Makes one wonder how much short term incentive compensation was tied to a target date or sales targets, or short term earnings? Just curious about the numbers because couldn’t you ditch this transmission for another at a lot less cost than buying back all the vehicles? It’s probably a real PITA to do that during the project and there were probably plenty of experienced people saying “we always find a fix.” What was the supposed benefit of this type of transmission, incredibly cheap component, help boost mpg? What a mess!

And let’s say California person two has a 2012 that’s effected. But the car was totaled in a wreak a few months ago. Their insurance paid them less than $10k for the car because Focus KBB is garbage due to the low resale on these. Anyway practical way to claim? Do both these folks need an attorney or can they just file with the class action firm? These story’s come out but I wager many 1000’s will never get a penny because they don’t know how to join/file.
