As a spreadsheet warrior, I love your detailed charts into the pad heat and the total cost of ownership. It's not until you start to add it all up that you realise how much our toys end up costing us. Totally worth it though! Looking forward to your drive in the Mk3 RS, that 2.5L motor is a gem!

The RS seems very robust and capable straight out of the box. I did some rallying in the late 90's and that was a great way to use up any spare cash you had. It would seem at this point that Mark's thrash around Goodwood was very reasonable all things considered. Now if I was driving we would have to factor in body damage obviously.🙃

Excellent video. Many thanks for sharing this information. The most important thing here is not how much money you spent, but rather that you are happy with what you did, & I could see that the more you did the trackdays the more of a rush it gave you. Also you were good at it so no reason to stop apart from the brake issue you encountered. I am really looking forward to the Mk2 RS video. Hope to see it soon.

Thank you! Don't get me wrong, what it cost doesn't bother me, it's within my means, it just suprised me when I added it all up. People often ask if I'd like a contribution to costs when I take them out on track...I think it would shock the hell out of them if I said sure, 7 laps in one session, that'll be £140 please LOL I'll not be stopping doing this any time soon, although once (maybe twice) a year is enough for me.

Mate, if it’s one thing I have learned about trackdays, upgrade the brakes, upgrade the brakes, upgrade the brakes. The brake setup is for road use only , just look at the state of the pad that come off the car, I'm amazed to did not have a accident. There not design for racing or trackdays and were never ment to perform like that from the start. I always invest in Racing Pads that are made to work st hight temperature, upgrade brake fluid to again cope with the heat, and then upgrade the disks, again to cope with heat. At my last Trackday this year at brand Hatch GP track I managed to do 7 session, 15 laps a session for 20mins and the brake where good all day long.

It happend because of the heat the metal got very hot and soft and then you hit rhe brakes hard and it will deform the pad. Also as the pad wears its ablility to dispearce heat make the problem worse. Left side only will be a mix of the clockwise circuit mainly and perhaps the silders where slightly sticky on that side. For future ref when on a track day get yourself some fans to put infront of the car just recahrgable ones. One for either brake duct and one for the radiator packs.

Fascinating information. I've taken my Focus ST to three track days and I really don't want to know what the actual cost is. To me denial is just a river in Egypt. I've kept my car showroom stock except for the Ford Racing tune and I'm also very happy with the performance. The only other change was to upgrade the brake fluid to Motul 600° after the first track day at Fontana, California. I have coveted a new RS since announced but the local dealers added so much mark up over the sticker price I could not justify trading in my ST. I'll watch your track day videos for fulfillment.

Quick thermodynamics lesson - if the ambient was 5 °C up from when you started the day, then that's only 5 °C extra on your brake temps which would have been as high as 500 °C - in other words the ambient temperature had nothing to do with the deterioration of your brakes and it was the other factors (not having enough cool down time, extended use with probably poor modulation and using street pads on a race track). Still live and learn hey! - i have no track day experience, but i am an engineer and technician with a physics background :D - i can build it, i just need to learn to drive it :D

OMG!! I have just had a reality check with the cost of the trackdays. I had done 12 trackdays at Goodwood in my old mk3 focus rs and one in the new rs edition. Although I have only had brake failure once and managed 8 track days and daily commute on the tyres and only had to change the fronts. The near side front does take a beating though.

I thought all those sessions were over a few days with hours between... LoL... No wonder the brakes ended up like they did. Most drivers can't be good on all aspects of the car... for your driving style, it is the brakes that suffer. I would suggest you need to think a little more about "Slow in, Fast out".... your brakes will thank you for it... and your lap times will reduce. Your calculations prove to show how expensive track days can be even when you only have a minor issue. Thanks for sharing with us Mark... and great info.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, looking back it was inevitable given the frequency of my sessions and how hard I was on them. I've always been able to get through a set of pads in one day at Goodwood, even supposed track pads, almost down to the metal in my Fiesta ST. Fitting a new set before hand is also something I'll just need to factor in on the RS and make sure I do before going out again. Driving style? Absolutely. I was too late onto the brakes, too hard as a result, and too inconsistent with my corner entry.

I never enter a track with less than 50% on my breakpads. The first 50% of the pads last 3-4 trackdays, the other half will vaporise in 20 minutes. I recommend Endless breakpads and Girodiscs brake discs. they are really great. And change brake fluid after 4-5 trackdays, goood video btw.

Excellent video as always; been waiting ages to know what damage was done to the brakes and it’s good to know it was nothing serious. I agree the standard brakes are good. I feel they don’t need upgrading unless you spend every other day on track. I have to say Mark your videos are great and very informative. I’ve had my RS since April after upgrading from the ST, however it’s not cost me £70k! How on earth is it that high? I will say the fuel consumption is higher, I tend to only use v power, would like to know if you use super unleaded or if you rotate the type of fuel? (Mines mapped) so i need to use higher octane fuel. Look forward to the next video 😁
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
It was £17k not £70k! Fuel? The 2nd engine was fitted to my car that had only had Tesco 99 up to that point so from day one was fed only that, Tesco 99. Having said that, because of Goodwood's location, it had a tankful of Sainsbury's 97 halfway through the trackday. Other than that one tankful it's always had and only ever has Tesco 99.

I've been to Castle Combe a good few times in the past, I know it would be a great circuit to run the RS around...but the convenience of Goodwood being right on my doorstep is hard to ignore. The short drive there and back, the comfort of knowing I could almost push the car home if it broke really badly, and the beauty of the Goodwood estate all year round mean that for my once or twice a year track outings, Goodwood is likely to remain the only venue for me.

@jamest5149
@jamest5149 6 жыл бұрын
day temps will have little to no effect on brake temps other than generating a bit more grip from the tyres so you can brake slightly harder than in the cold. You are talking of a 15 degrees delta between a gold track day and a hot track day, this is a very small change when you consider the disc's and pads will run up to 450/500 degrees on track. I would swap in some pagid RS29 pads or similar pads and always new! plus some fresh castrol srf, but as you mentioned, being a bit smoother on driving and in particular ease up on the braking with careful cool down laps and time between sessions would probably save you any issues.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
This is true re. the ambient temps...but as you say the knock on effects from increased grip and heat in everything else is a factor, albeit a relatively minor one. Driving style is all I'll be changing 👍

Absolutely it is, purely objective, but a factor it most definitely is. Even if I stripped it out of my calculations completely I still would have had a big spike in pad 'stess' right at the end of the day.

Great and very in depth upload there Mark. Did you consider vented discs at all ? That would certainly cool down the brake pads.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
They're vented front discs already...do you mean drilled? If so, no, absolutely not. The downsides of drilled discs far outweigh any slight, and I mean very slight, cooling improvements. Drilled discs on road cars have little to no benefit, and are mostly fitted purely for cosmetic reasons; if I ran some on track they'd start cracking in no time at all!
@Jademyheart
@Jademyheart 6 жыл бұрын
When I ran a few in Shalsey I certainly did notice , Brembo xtra's .I do Differ there . On the track / street, a good quality slotted brake rotor and high quality brake pads. the look of a drilled rotor, with a high quality brand, has certainly no chance of cracking. Far from cosmetic appearance at all! Don't be disaloushouned by fitting "ford only product's " Theres Far more ,superior parts available , than just stock F, parts.

I know I could easily try different pads or discs, but knowing what I now know, I don't think I need to. A slight change to my on-track driving style, and more importantly allowing the brakes to rest a bit more, will mean the standard brakes will be OK for me next time out.

It would be great to see a comparison that draws on your footage driving the Fiesta ST.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
No plans for a tune, no plans for modifications. Apart from a slight change to my driving style and giving the brakes a little more time to rest between sessions, it doesn't need anything at all in my opinion. It's plenty fast enough, nothing went past me all day long. Instruction? I have many times at many different circuits (here's me taking instruction around Goodwood back in 2004 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorCkId5bL2pars), I'm long overdue a refresher around Goodwood though as I've developed a few bad habits! If I can fit it in I might do a side by side lap comparison of my Fiesta ST v the Focus RS just to see how and where the RS gains its 3 seconds or so per lap around Goodwood.

This was a direct booking with Goodwood on a 105db day which is always a little more expensive. The lunch was a very very nice thing and you also get as many double-espressos/cappucinos/lattes/whatever you want, all day long. The upside of the day costing this much is that it keeps the sheds away, everyone is there just to enjoy their cars, no one has a point to prove, and the on-track space and ettiqutte is second to none. That's worth paying for IMO.

This true, there's far too many garage queens and far too few actually driven and truly appreciated! The one I drive was though, although it's only racked up 50k miles so still felt tight and like new. Pad deformation...yeah, interesting. As said in the video I think it's just because I let the friction material get too low, I gave them too little rest, and worked them too hard. I genuinely think it's entirely my fault...fascinating from an engineering perspective, but something I'll be trying to avoid in the future!

Does it? Ford's development driver stated and demonstrated that 'race mode' is all about lap time, not getting the car sideways. The RDU when even slughtly engaged is promoting oversteer due to the oversped rear wheels so I think the RDU should do less when in track mode. This is my one major regret about this day...that I was having too much fun as it was and never got around to trying race mode out. I'm really curious to see how it changes the behaviour of the car. Next time!

@@MarkCup70 from what I was told at RS Academy it uses it more of the RDU and allows a greater angle before the stability control ) which may also be why you pressed in the pad from heat, from the graphs I have seen everything is in Sport in track mode, where in Sport mode AWD, Dampers and ESC is in normal mode. And I think the get car sideways is talking about drift, as racing sideways is lost traction and time. At RS Academy I did the AutoX in both normal and track, the car handled WAY better in track

I had to replace things, that was clear to me, but until I had it jacked up and wheel-less I didn't know exactly how many things I had to replace. I didn't want to have to jack the car up and pull the wheels off to replace the things that needed replacing more than once, so I bought all of the things I might need to replace in case they needed replacing. As it turns out I didn't need to replace all the things I was prepared for and equipped to replace. That makes perfect sense to me!

I don't think so. Next time I go out with standard pads, discs, and fluids, will prove this.

£334 to insure the rs seems like a really good price?
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 6 жыл бұрын
It's less than that Bryan, thats the cost so far with my annual bills being apportioned on a day by day basis. Year one was £262 for me and the second year's premium dropped to £246! The joys of having a few years on me and a blemish free driving history 👍

This is why I shelled out about 1300 dollars for a set of slotted stoptech rotors, yellow stuff pads and braided lines. The stock pads are GARBAGE. Ford got them straight from an economy car from the 90s or something. 40 grand and they couldnt put some better pads on instead of a useless exhaust valve for example.

I've worn a brand new set of EBC Yellowstuff pads down to the metal in one day at Goodwood as well, that was in an 1,100 kg car as well, not a 1,600 kg car like the RS is. Just sayin'. 😉👍

I can not believe that you spent that much money on standard disc's & pads the reason why your brake pads bent is because you had brake fade & you were pressing the pedal harder & harder .for the money you spent you could of got some nice pads & discs what you did is utter madness
@MarkCup70

Interesting that you could tell the pedal pressure I was applying from the camera angles on my track videos. For the avoidance of any doubt at all I can tell you that you are in fact 100% wrong. I needed no more pedal pressure ALL day long, right up until the point of failure, which happened, as I explained, due to the excessive heat...I had no fade, at all, not once. Convince yourself otherwise if you like...why you would I'm not sure but you crack on with your alternative facts LOL! As for the price of brakes, there are better pads and discs that are cheaper than what I bought from Ford? Link please...

It's the usual expert kid that knows all about modding a Focus RS from playing Forza all day. The standard brake setup is decent as has been pointed out by a lot of owners and reviews, you just met the point of failure quite fast because of the already worn pads. Swapping into discs that would be worth considering to be an "upgrade" would have cost at least double of the Ford items and potentially (depending on pad / disc combo) less usable for daily driving (as i know you do).

👍👍👍 Subscribers or not I'll be doing this for a long time, I enjoy the creative process of planning, filing, and editing almost as much as I enjoy driving, talking about, looking at, cleaning, maintaining, and understanding my car. That others also enjoy what I out out there is a bonus for me as I get a whole load more feedback to learn from.
