Watched that clip sooo many times over the Years. It influenced my decision to buy a new EO ST-3 in 2006! And now...I am due to pick up an EO ST-2 next Tuesday, '57 plate, 24k miles. So..I like the ST (5 cylinder that is) so much..I'm on my 2nd! :-))

my ST is still standard BHP @ 225 - a remap which would take it to 280 BHP also increases the fuel economy by 10% overall...as it stands i get an average of 30 MPG out of it - admittedly i don't drive like a frikin lunatic everywhere but i don't drive like a granny either - i caught myself doing 120 MPH on the way to work a month or two ago and decided that's far to shitty a way to lose my license...be sensible kids ;o)

edwin bryce pillay I had forgotten about this comment until you replied! I have now had one since September and the only problems I have had are a fuel pressure sensor needing replaced and the alternator went. However these are problems that could happen to any car. If you are look to buy one I would recommending googling “focus st 225 buyers guide” and going to the guide on fordownersclub(dot)com

While that's not even close to one of the best times recorded, it's fantastic for a vehicle in that price range. I think that's why he's so ecstatic about the car. Not only is it quick, but it handles like a dream. I'd totally get one, but they don't have that model in the US. So I'm gonna settle for an SVT Focus.

I had a stateside spec 2015 fiesta ST and I loved it. The only thing that kept me from getting the focus ST yet is that I wanted the newer RS and there was a lot of hype 5 years ago about the phenomenal handling. I loved that thing! Now that I've tried the RS the focus ST is next in line.

I bought a new black one in 2007 off the back of this this review. Kept it for 3 years. Now in 2023 I have bought a black 2007, 1 owner, low mileage unmodified example as a second car. Its become a modern classic and it was incredibly difficult to find such a nice example. But absolutely loving it.

@TheAMGLover Hey Eurotrash, it doesn't cost half as much in Europe because you live in a Socialist nanny state(s). The M3's price isn't jacked up when it's sold in the US. So, don't blame the US for your insane taxes and fees. The stock Mustang GT nearly equals the M3 on the track. That is a fact and has been proven. And when the Boss 302 comes out next year, it will runs circles around the M3, and will STILL cost less.

i watched this when it came out and wanted to own one of them so badly. i own a face lifted model, its a tonne of fun but next time i drive it i need to check if it has the adjustable steering he mentioned at @5:14 because ive never messed with that button. then again mines an st2 (i prefer the seats) so i might not have it.

While I am an American, and I don’t believe we got this particular version, the focus hatch backs were amazing. My dad and I owned a blazing copper 2005 zx3. What a car. It lasted 203,000 miles and it still had more miles left when I traded it in.

I had the facelift ST-3 in electric orange. It was mount tuned also when I bought it. 265bhp 275 ft lbs of torque! What a car! Always put a smile on my face. 165mph on the dyno.

There is multiple reasons why FORD don't brand the same car in US and Europe. One of witch is a different legislation, generaly much restraining in Europe - safety, ecological concerns, price - that prevent cars likes muscle cars to be shiped to the old continent. Contrariwise, it seem hatchbacks aren't that much popular in USA, where the long roads and lack of public transport favour larger, but less economical, cars like SUV and sedans.

ive always been a ford and toyota truck person (american here) but if i buy a new car i want a small fun car. id would take this over the civic just because i stand behind ford. and stop having this uk vs american war in the comments. we are on the same side! of course the uk top gear is better than the us. but the country its is not. be proud from where you are from not arrogant, chill and laugh at the people making it a big deal.

It's not *technically* an American car. Here in Europe most Ford vehicles are completely different cos Ford has a different division that designs them. What works in America doesn't work in Europe, so things are different. We prefer fast revving, sport tuned engines. The Vauxhall Astra VXR is a 2L turbo that produces 250bhp. Americans would rather have some 5L V6 that produces that. We also prefer good handling cars to comfortable ones. So this Focus was designed in Britain, not the US.

I'm split between this and the Fiesta, especially considering both of them are headed to Canada next model year when the crappy American Fords are going to catch up with their more capable European counterparts, and Top Gear's given them both pretty rosy recommendations. :D I wish they'd do a Mazda 3, since that's another one I've got on my mind, but that's probably a little pedestrian for them. ;)

@MrKedab I can't get insured on a Focus Zetec S or ST for anything worth paying. Cheapest I saw was £2800 on the ST. I'm 20 year old with 2 crashes. Yet I can get insured on an Astra SRi for cheaper! So I bought that. Haha! 2008 plate SRi+ 1.9 CDTi 150 bhp. Pulls like a tank and fun to drive with fairly cheap insurance! Can't go wrong.

I've had my eye on the Ford Focus, but the styling on the '09 model just looks dumb. Never seen so many colliding straight lines in my life. The new Fiesta looks nice, though... Though I didn't know there was a different one in North America, and everywhere else. In 2010, they'll apparently be one and the same. This could change everything.

Yup they loved the Corvette,Chrysler Hemi and the Cadillac crossover definately avoiding toyota they seem to be hiding too many problems, going with the chevy malibu instead as its a better warranty,better mpg and the rating overall is better hondas ok but too small

My dads old Focus is one of the best drives i have encountered, i have driven from London, through France to the costa del sol in the south of Spain and the car loved it. My dads earlier cars were simply awfall on the same trip, ie the Citroen Picasso (Uncomfy seats, had dead legs after 4 hours or so, good car though) and VW Passat (Bumpy and bad milage), my current Mini Cooper was also good, the focus imo was the best allrounder.

@redwhiteblue91 To be honest I work in the city so I get the bus everyday I literally put fuel in once every 5 weeks so fuel isnt the issue its the insurance for me, its annoying because im hardly in my car so its a thrill when I am. I literally drive it twice in the week (6mile round trip) to the gym and maybe at the weekends. I am looking at the Leon FR because its the same group as the Fiesta ST but my dad had one with the BTCC kit on and it got robbed last easter so it would go down well ha.

I might look at that xpack astra then because then the insurance will not be as much and ill save on fuel is i get the 1.7 or 9 CTDi and insurance wont be so bad then it will let me pay the bank loan off ahaha. @godzillaisnuclea123 I think the European Ford Focus was designed in the UK and Germany and it is assembled in many countries arround the world, with the RS versions being tuned in the UK and the STi's in Germany. Even the Duratec & Zetec Engines was co-designed by Cosworth in the UK and Porsche in Germany. So alot of work was put in by both countries. But unfortunatley, they are not assembled in the UK, which is a real shame, as most Brits like the Focus, especially the RS versions.

As far as the cars go ..m3 standard in belgium : 71900€ (manual) 75700€ (drivelogic) , very good quality-build price for a Mustang GT : double the price of usa-prices ..and the car isn't worth it . Been proven? nurburg-ring : M3-standard time : 7:48 ford mustang gt : not even hitting the list ..only the gt50 is The 2010 camaro SS however , takes 8:20 ..even if the gt is slighty better it still won't be better then a m3 on tracks

Take something else in mind... this 2.5 engine is a true one-off ...we'll never see an affordable 5-cylinder in a ford ever again , with it's great sound and it's performance..and even the great engine-tuning possible with this car ..too bad they won't go on with this engine. You want a great daily , with some great performance possibilities..just go for a focus st ! Secondhand they go for easy money aswell , it really is a great time for carlovers to spend their money !

@MrTommyUdo here in europe it doesn't cost half as much , especially when you count in insurance etc That said, don't be stupid , it will never outhandle a european m3 ..never ever ...especially on tracks like spa-francorchamps , nurburgring, zandvoort etc..the mustang gt will loose easily and won't handle 'just as good' by far . Respect for the mustang though , but you got to stay real...

For those bragging about camaro getting 8 more horsepower for 2011... it is pointless.. same 0-60 times, no new upgrades...( Chevy admitted it understated 2010 horsepower numbers and now list it at 312, up from 304 ) I believe it was a marketing gimmick because Fords mustang v6 for 2011 is listed at 305.... 1 HP better then Chevy for 2010, then Chevy announces new number at 312... 7 HP better then Ford.

@jalclk1244 There are a few fords that are exceptionally reliable (crown victoria, F-150, taurus, mustang) and the focus is one of them. Those cars can be compared to hondas and toyotas in reliability. I like the genesis more than the focus, don't get me wrong. But what I was saying was the Genesis is a completely different kind of car. The Focus is a hot hatch (FWD, small engine) and the genesis is a RWD V6/turbo'd 4 sports coupe.

@TheDubeo Where does it say that it ran a 5.8 sec to 60? Even Chevy says it'll do it in 6.1 seconds. RS has a smaller engine what do you expect? I wanna see a 2.5 liter engine that Chevy makes with 305 hp and 325 torques. And there are NO hp gains for the V6. Just re-rating it. No actual gains! But still, the Focus is faster around the Nurburgring than the V6 Camaro. Handeling and lightness wins.

And anyways, the 0-60 time I got for the V6 Camaro was from Edmunds. Just accept it, Ford wins. All the time. Even with the old 315 hp Mustang got rated first place vs the Callenger SRT-8 and the Camaro SS in Road&Track. And no the 2011 Camaro doesn't get any hp upgrades.

@TheDubeo A ford Focus isn't my dream car, it's a hell of a lot better than that Shitty Camero. And no, the Camero has been up against the 5.0 stupid. And like I said, 5.0 took first, Genisis took second, Challenger SRT-8 took third, Camaro SS got fourth, the Charger SE took 5th and the Camaro V6 got last place. And the Hyundai is a first timer where as the others, except for the Challenger, have done better and better versions.

@TheDubeo What Chevy car is better than a Ford. the Focus uses a Volvo engine so that's quality. And Govornment Motors was the one that used up our taxpayer's dollars because Ford sold more than them. The new 5.0 Mustang has been on top of all the comparisons between the Camero and the Challenger. Shoot on Motor Trend's article even the Slow ass Challenger beat it and even more surprisingly the Hyundai Genisis got 2nd place after the Mustang. the Camero got 4th place.

I've never seen one roll on a nice track either but rally racing through the bush is a hell of a lot more touchy than autocross, and we don't really get second chances, so if I get a tire that lifts, then a blowout or a roll, I end up with a skid, if that skid goes for more than about 4 feet, I'm off the course and rolling down the hill. I think the debate here is that you do autocross and run a different suspension than I do. just watch some rally tapes, wheel lift doesn't usually end well.

not misinformed just a driver who's lost cars and races from rolls, and every rollover I've been in has started as innocent inside wheel lift. it increases the force on the opposing tire and if you life enough and hold then there is an area of about 1 to 2 degree of lift wide where the diagonally opposing tire simply rolls, and then you're skidding, then you catch the edge of the track and then you're skidding on your roof at 75 mph. just speaking from experience.

Why is that people just can't stand the fact that, despite the ST not being the fastest or the most well made hot hatch, its brilliant looks, ride comfort, economy (not on paper but in the real world), price tag and near perfect handling for a front wheel drive car, it is loved by so many people and one of the best selling hot hatches? That fact actually seems to annoy people but i don't know why. The ST is simply a brilliant all-rounder. I don't see why thats an issue for people.

Body roll is horrible (of course, this is the year they softened the "sport-tuned suspension to give it a softer ride), the tires they come with are worthless (wore down to threads at only 39k), has the 2.3L I4, and the only real "option" it has is the leather interior and Street Appearance Package. Not to mention it is a 4-door Sedan. No turbo, no handling, NO NOTHING! Please, Ford. Bring this car state-side!

You should realy blame the general opinion of the American population that frown upon cars like these that scream EUROPE trough every inch of its body. Seriously, i'm actualy very impressed that Ford is actualy considering selling the Fiesta in the US. If you take that into consideration, then its also very viable that the Focus might go into production there as well. Think positive mate, you might yet see'em over there. We Euros are not madmen for prefering these types of cars, i assure you.

Brett - the Honda Civic Type R (2006) has 200 naturally aspirated BHP and weighs ~2600 -2700 lbs. The 2006 Ford Focus ST has 223 BHP from a blown engine and weighs about the same 2600-2700 lbs. So the focus would have more HP earlier in the rev range and more torque (the turbo) and the same weight. Plus the focus' Torsen LSD is very good. There is no reason a type r would "piss on" it unless your friend simply can't find his gears.

They do sell the Focus in America, but the Focus they sell in the States blows compared to the version sold in Europe. Then again Rally is more popular in Europe and the European Focus does compete in Rally. Maybe that is the X factor that makes the Focus ST "ASBO" so hot to trot. There was rumor earlier this year that Ford was gonna bring the ST across the pond, but further scuttlebutt says that Ford America feared it would cut into the Mustang's sales.

Why was I not surprised to see your age (not educated enough yet) and nationality (not interested in becoming educated)? The Focus is the car that won the World Rally Championship twice in the last few years, and almost won the driver's title four times. Ford Europe have also put out a 300bhp version of the Focus with the same power as the rally cars, to compete with Subaru's WRX SDi 330 bhp monsters.

@MrKedab Oh don't get me wrong I am very happy with my car im not trying to be snobby haha. But I have a passion for fast Fords and I love the Focus. Even the base model is pretty nice. And yeah 6.5k its shocking mates is 4100 for a 1.2 Clio and that was the cheapest. He had to pay in full at that. Then they wonder why theres so many people who drive without insurance.
