I was a Ford Salesman back in 1999 and had a Focus 1.8 Zetec as a company car. Boy what a car, what a chassis. Lacked grunt but it was so good in the Twisties you could carry so much more speed than other front wheel drive cars and pretty much anything else. Lift off oversteer for fun. One of the best Front wheel drive cars I have ever driven. Shame most are rot boxes now other wise I would have another in a breath..👍👍👍

Despite the meagre 115ps from the 1.8, it was streaks faster than the 100ps 1.6, and the sweetest engine of the range. As you say you could literally attack any bend with way too much entry speed, the steering full of feel and brakes gave you so much confidence, knowing it would hold on, or with a little lift to pivot the rear around and still come out the other end facing the right way. Almost nothing would cover ground with such ease. The 2.0 ESP was sheer witchcraft.
@soundseeker632 жыл бұрын
Blame all the nasty salt on UK roads for that. The Mk1 Focus was arguably the first Ford that DIDN'T get rust holes in it way before it should. And the Zetec engines were smooth and tough as old boots. Far better than the dreaded ecoboom oops sorry ecoboost they make today.
@soundseeker632 жыл бұрын
I like these retrospective reviews that acknowlege the older cars rather than simply promoting brand new stuff. Vik is right, the Mk1 Focus has worn it's years very well (and so has she, come to think of it!). That being said, its a given that the new cars are going to be significantly faster and I'm not convinced that faster alone equals more fun, especially on public roads where the speeds you can realistically (and safely) achieve are much more limited. I honestly believe the Top Gear-style obsession with judging everything by its lap times is a real disservice to what makes cars enjoyable in the real world.

I am going to soon give the Focus MK1 the credit it deserves as no one else will on You Tube to the extent that i would like or the car deserves.These cars are pure bliss to drive and i have owned them all Jdm Crx,Peugeot 205,Bmw Motorsport 528i,E30 323i, Toyota Celica.mk1 escorts Turbo skylines,muscle cars including Chargers,Ford v8 to the tune of 500hp etc. I would not swap my Zetec focus let alone my st170 for any of the above as every car i purchased was better than the other.After 30 years tuning cars and as an engineer i specialised in BMW cars for 15 years.All i see here in 20 years of progress is shiny paint, direct injection madness.I would bet my house that with a k24 tuned to the level of the new focus and a lsd, in a MK1 chassis with no turbo and on a budget would gain back the 7 sec and extend it another 7 seconds etc.When i watched dannyDC2 video regarding what is handling (who never mentions the MK1 once)Mk1 focus chassis is superior to the type R EP3 the times are on the board if you look hard enough the mk1 focus st170 is quicker around a track with 30+ hp deficit.The new focus is a great package don't get me wrong but for a purist there is to much weight,to much sound insulation,to much complication (Another words 20 years of progress) with the direct injection engine and i could go on and on.Hopefully i can create a special edition version of one of these cars and show what they can really do (With hard facts).Just look at that smile on Vicki's face as it tells it all.

All the other cars I had were brilliant at something, crap at others, yet the st170 was a pretty good all rounder. Now I've got two kids and a wife who has ms and needs a wheelchair sometimes, so bought a ford cmax for the space and family appeal. Wish I would've been able to find an st170 estate car for a good price with low miles when I was looking to buy a family car though. I did look as I liked the st170 that much. Best things for me were: 6th gear (which made 3rd feel like 2.5), the build quality was pretty good, small overall size but surprisingly spacious and as Vicky said the handling was pretty sharp so day to day driving was a pleasure, without being too stiff. All in all a great car. The downsides: not really many tuning parts for it, it looked clean but was a bit boring looking and it needed a turbo or faster acceleration.

I realise the point of the video is to demonstrate progress across 20 years but a more comparable test would be the ST170 against a current Fiesta ST. Closer in power, price and weight. I’m sure the Fiesta would win (faster 0-60 and various modern upgrades) but it would be a closer race. The ST170 came out at a time when Ford had largely stopped making hot versions of it’s cars for a number of years and the ST170 seemed (to me at least) as a tentative foot back in the water rather than fully committing. Having grown lusting after Cosworth’s the ST170 wasn’t a car that really scratched that itch, for me anyway (not denying that it was a fun car to drive)

@janesyb2 жыл бұрын
Minus a bit of power? It has 70hp less. Admittedly Ford claim the rolling 30-70 is faster because it has more mid range torque but they're just comparing flagships 20 years apart.
@siraff44612 жыл бұрын
@@janesyb Thats the top trumps figures. Remember the RS also has 4wd, weighs more and loses more power to the road. By the time it gets to the wheels the RS only has around 50hp more. It also has nearly 100kg more to lug about (1524kg vs 1433kg). That gives the RS around 15% more PTW or around 6% at the wheels. The old RS holds almost a 25% advantage over the ST170 with no extra losses to the wheels. The flagship 20 years ago was the mk1 RS. Now its the ST 280. It probably has more to do with what cars they could get their hands on than a great match up.

God bless Richard Parry-Jones for these cars. Another car he worked wonders with was the Escort RS2000 4x4, amazing handling car overlooked due to its mundane relative.

No RS since 2017 (and never again) so I guess for Ford the ST has taken a more centre stage....

I’d still take the the st170 over the newest one any day… yes it’s slower but the mk1 is so engaging to drive.

I bought a mint condition, low mileage ST170 in 2005 - great in the twisties but woefully underpowered in a straight line and a complete lack of low-down grunt

This is so unfair, over 100hp advantage for the new Focus, give the old Focus a turbo+intercler+better brakes, etc and the same power and then we will see. And then the difference in price. For the price of a new ST I could buy 2 old ones and tune them up to the same specs,

But is it more fun? I bet the old girl is still brilliant on the back roads!

I totally saw this coming, Ford Focus ST is a brilliant car and suffice to say I love the newer one even more. I would love to own one however Ford is being a bit Nasty, Have not seen any if those new Focus here, but given the choice between my 2017 Hyundai i20 Elite and the new Focus, I'll take the Focus any day.

Shouldn't you be comparing your i20 with a fiesta ?

@@chrishart8548 how can I compare an Hyundai i20 with a Fiesta, If I never drove a Fiesta. TBH Ford doesn't import them here.

@@gpierre90 I would choose the focus just because its bigger. I'm in the UK and the best thing I ever did is change my mk2 focus for a mk4.5 mondeo. The mondeo is night and day with ride quality handling. Its definitely worth the extra money.

Although it's not a like-for-like comparison, I'd like to see the Focus ST170 versus the Fiesta ST180 - they're probably about the same size and weight...

It be great to see an episode where they take the old focus and modify it and see what it takes to make the old focus perform the same as the new one.

The SVT(st170) focus may not be "fast" for today's standards, but there is not many cars out there that the SVT can't keep up with on some bendy backroads. You can push it until you'd think it would fly off the road, and even still you can barely scratch it's potential. There were a few times where the back tire would come off the ground in a corner, and it would still feel so well planted. Unbelievable engineering even for today's standards.

Arguably the new ST is a replacement for the Mk1 RS, given the price difference, even adjusting for inflation.

Until this year I had a Mk4 Focus ST 2.3 Ecoboost Automatic - yeah, it was okay. The automatic was crap or let's say: If you want a Focus ST, take the manual. If you just want a Focus 2.3 Ecoboost, take the automatic. We had a Focus Mk1 in the family from 2003 to 2017 - sadly not the ST170, but the most powerful TDCi (we are talking about highly motivated 115 hp). It was a really good car and fun to drive. I can confirm, that the driving position was too high and I was missing a 6th gear, which the ST170 had.
