Thanks again, I did my second tonight. I went the easier route though and ordered a complete new steering knuckle. Getting the ball joint off was again the main issue I had. A botte jack, block of wood, MAP gas torch, and 5lb sledgehammer got it done after a couple hours. My rotor was surprisingly hard to remove as well even though the rotors are just over 2 years old. Part of the problem with living in Canada with all the salt on the road. I ran into a strange issue during re-assembly, I had it mostly back together when I went to put the ABS sensor in to find it wouldn't fit.. Either the new one I had ordered or the original. I took it back apart (aside from the ball joint) and noticed there's a snap ring holding the bearing in to the knuckle and it was blocking the insertion. I used a small screwdriver to tap the opening up to the top and everything went together as hoped. These instructions are so helpful

Great video. You make it look so easy. Another good method to push the half shaft out of the hub is with a three jaw puller (available for rent at most auto parts stores). It will either push the half shaft in or pull the hub out. Either one is a desired result.
@dtrrtd7748 жыл бұрын
+Rob Petrovec (Pet Rock) That'd be preferable; it seems to be better to avoid hammering too hard for older cars where it might be really seized on from corrosion, with the ball joint having to take the forces. I had a simple brake rotor removal on an Audi A6 that wouldn't even yield to the mighty Thor; and since I wasn't planning on replacing bearings or anything in the axle, I went and got a hydraulic puller, which then made it ridiculously easy. Oh, the satisfaction on just giving it a few pumps on the lever and hearing it pwaang out...

I've worked on thousands of different vehicles over the past few years and I've seen many of these type videos. This guy is definitely a master tech and I recommend you pay attention to his videos and the knowledge he shares for free. Many other people claim to be mechanics or technicians yet lack the skills and knowledge this profession requires. If you don't feel relaxed and comfortable repairing your vehicle, take it to a professional. I've heard horror stories of diy-ers skipping steps and do not torque something correctly then parts fall off on the road causing an accident and or possible death.

Always good to get tips from other professionals regardless of how many of these (or similar) bearings I've replaced. Cool idea on wedging a screw driver into the rotors fins while torquing down the axel nut. I’d be worried about it bending the screw driver though since those nuts take a lot of torque (150+ ft lbs). I usually thread a four lug nuts onto two adjacent studs and wedge a large pry-bar in between those two studs to prevent the hub from spinning while torquing the axle nut. The lug nuts protect the threads from being damaged. Works pretty well and you don’t need the rotor or caliper installed to do it. btw, you mentioned you’d have the torque specs in the description. The description just says “Description” as of today.
@FordTechMakuloco10 жыл бұрын
I have been putting that same broken handle screwdriver in the fins for probably 5 years now straight as can be fits deep in the fins never budges with the highest of torque specs I love it. I know I need to finish filling description out. I am out of town right now and just playing catch up with questions to help people on down time.

The driver's side front wheel bearing is being replaced on my 2013 Escape as you read this. It has about 48k miles on it and was humming pretty loud in the front end when I would do left-hand curves at 60+ mph. Pretty disappointed these are so fragile and very glad it's still under warranty!
@alb1234567210 жыл бұрын
It is a similar arrangement to a Taurus/continental. That strut pinch bolt took me two hours to pound out on a 20yo car. It was so beat up I had to replace it. The AL knuckle on those cars makes it very corrosion friendly. Those stud bolts should get antisieze..if I ever get a new car I will take the bolts out and add it. With aftermarket struts it is a tight fit to wrestle into the knuckle- needed a ton of weight on the prybar - it slipped and ended up dislocating the outer CV - but was able to regrease and reassemble it.

Another fantastic video! I did remove the speed sensor on my 2008 taurus-x along with the wheel hub (rear right). I had to drill out the old sensor. It was a flat blade style sensor. I am wondering if Ford puts some kind of a resin to fill the hole beside the sensor or if what i encountered is just plain corrosion and road debris? It was hard as metal to drill and now the sensor hole is back to a perfect circle again. I did put some antiseize in the hole if i ever need to remove the sensor again. I live in quebec, rust belt canada! Thank you!
Thanks I do what I can with what I have to get the word out.

@angelathrall38964 жыл бұрын
At the risk of being blocked for too many comments on 1 video, I've got 2 more details to add. First is, pressing the drive axle out of the hub is a pretty tough affair. You'll either need a powerful air chisel for the method shown, (my wimpy, cheap model barely worked); or plan on a "very stout" puller. Since it's rust scale causing it to stick, liquid wrench is a must. Second, when pressing the old bearing out of the hub using the OTC hub tamer, the bearing finally "popped" in the hub after exerting quite a bit of pressure. I took the time to clean up the splines on the drive axle end and corresponding splines inside the hub removing the rust scale. This made reassembly a snap.

"Following torque specs is critical for side loads" Glitch in video editing? You had the axle nut on with the torque wrench then it was off again, I'm confused. That aside a very nice professional video! I guess they use Locktite instead of customary cotter pins on the critical fasteners. Also didn't know about the built-in reluctor on this design. Saves a few pennies per wheel I guess.
@FordTechMakuloco10 жыл бұрын
Yes glitch in editing, as far as the clamp load the shaft is a tight fit into the hub, so you suck the shaft into the hub with the impact and by feel I can tell when it is bottomed out I give it a bit more then I can bust out the torque wrench, I have developed this feel after many years of doing this with the same gun. Then as you seen me torqueing the nut I had to turn it quite a bit yet to achieve the final torque spec which also shows I did no go over spec with the gun. It is all in the feel.

I need some guidance here related to the US Spec Transit Connect; I was driving with my Father in his 2013 Transit Connect recently. I had to merge on the highway, had to do a brief full throttle. I noticed a plume of smoke behind me. Any ideas? Are the Transit Connects with the 2.0 gasoline motors known for burning oil or having intake gasket leaks with coolant getting in as well? I tried searching but a lot of results relate to the European spec Transit Connects with the diesel motors.

If it is a bearing approx. how much time do I have to get it fixed. I cant work on it until next week end ( have to work) about 6 days or 50 miles a day commute..What is your best guess, I know it is hard to diagnose from a distance but an educated guess will do..Thanks in advance...
