I am replacing the water pump on a 2006 Freestyle. The keyways sheared off. I am finding that is a recurring problem. I checked Ford online and it says discontinued. I located a pump with the cam bolt as opposed to the key way. Wish me luck.

Is there a special bleed or burping procedure after refilling the coolant? Thanks. Great vid.

Did you notice while you working in that area by the throttle body. A small vaccum looking line. It comes from under the TB to the front of the TB , up to the top goes thru a plastic hose holder on the TB and u turn downward and is connected to nothing. Is that normal. I find it unusual. Would it be a vent line of sorts?

Yes, the camshaft turns the water pump.

How is your water pump still holding up on your 3.0 Duratec engine? I've heard several folks say to only use the bolt on water pump and not the one with the ear/tab's? Thanks, John

2 yrs later and it's running fine with no issues. Everyone has their opinions. Everyone will have different experiences. Sometimes parts aren't installed correctly but are blamed. Sometimes parts are to blame. This one is on my father-in-laws so I wouldn't hear the end of it if it broke or failed. So I'm pretty confident the parts I use work fine. Most of the time you only hear the bad, not the good.

How did you get the air bubbles out the system
@okcvet1st24 күн бұрын
I check for bleed valves on all vehicles before anything else and open them to start the process. Some vehicles have them, most don't. I run most vehicles with the radiator/degas bottle cap off until they reach operating temp. The thermostat should open, which you can normally tell when all coolant hoses are warm/hot to the touch. Once it runs for a while and gets fully warm, I shut it off and let it fully cool. Recheck coolant level. Then I drive it at highway speeds for about 30 min. Let it cool down and recheck coolant level. I do use a pressure cap setup when needed. Warming vehicles up to operating temp with the radiator cap off, then letting them fully cool, usually gets the bubbles out. Do not drive the vehicle with the radiator or degas cap off. The process may have to be repeated several times, depending on the vehicle and situation.

There's any gasket between the water pump and the thermostat housing?
@kobamalo602136 ай бұрын
Yes. A large O ring sits on the groove that is made on the thermostat housing, which is then connectedto the water pump. The O ring on my freestyle thermostat housing is blue in my case. It can be blue, black, and perhaps orange.

NEVER use a after market water pump on this model vehicle. Only use Fords pump with attaching bolt!!

Everyone has their own opinions. The water pump I used in this video works just fine and comes with a lifetime warranty. Other channels may suggest using only certain parts. Most people don't want to spend $400 on a Ford pump when they can get a murray or other aftermarket for $150. I myself have certain parts I prefer to use but I don't tell people they must use a certain part.

Just purchased an aftermarket new pump on Ebay. Amazingly it has the bolt type impeller and came with a new gasket . The casting and impeller are of high quality and identical to the stock Ford product. I guess some aftermarket manufacturers are producing better units then others. $46, free shipping.

I just went through this last week. Purchased from Advance Auto Parts for $160 in Sept 2019. Engine temps were all over the place in the last month. Finally gave up on guessing the problem and pulled the newish pump. The metal tabs were sheared off. Took it back to Advance with my receipt #, and was refunded! Went to the local pull-a-part and found an oem pump in like new condition for only $13. Problem solved!

It looks like my coolant is leaking at the connection where the cam shaft and water pump interface. Will the new water pump fix that or do you think it could be something with the cam shaft itself? Anyone please advise if you can and how it gets fixed. Thank you in advance.
@okcvet1st4 жыл бұрын
A new water pump should fix it. No water enters the engine through the camshaft area. The water pump is driven by the camshaft. Its common for the pump to start leaking and replacement is in order. Thanks for watching!

I would make #9. okc did a nice job explaining it, but as a mechanic for 50 years, I can tell you that logically there is no way this key-way design will last unless you get lucky and I mean very lucky. According to one comment above, there is another aftermarket that uses the bolt on system. I would recommend trying that one before using a pressed (lightly pressed) on pump.

Ive replaced two key way water pumps in the two years Ive had mine. Can confirm the keyway version is garbage. Kinda wish the bolt on also had the keyway though
@itsmeagain85182 жыл бұрын
The aftermarket key-way style is a BAD idea. I have replaced three of them on my 07 Five Hundred. I was lucky enough to get 10,000 miles on 1 of them. There is no way for the adaptive keyway system to guarantee it will stay on. Watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJDdeoiEhbFgp9k and you will see why Ford techs know better than to use the aftermarket ones (Unless someone has designed a cam bolt on style) on this engine. I have worked on cars as a mechanic for over 50 years and have to say that this redesign is not very logical. I ended up getting a used factory one and it has lasted over 70,000 miles. This time aftermarket won't suffice.
