I am lucky, I raced a replica for 10 years and I have driven the Ford GT. The modern car is a fabulous thing that captures the looks of the original brilliantly within the rules and regulations all designers have to work to these days. The key differences to the driving experience are mostly about the interior layout. In the 2005 car you and your passenger sit right on the outside of the car, just like in a Cobra. In the original 40 the fuel is in two tanks, one in each sill. This pushes both driver and passenger shoulder to shoulder in the middle of the car, which feels completely different (I don't think the sill tanks would ever pass current regulations!). Also, the original cars are all right hand drive to get the driver close to the pit on most circuits, including Le Mans. No doubt this would help with managing the width on our roads. All Le Mans cars had to show that you could carry a proper amount of luggage. Ford's solution was two aluminium luggage boxes, one just above the exhaust pipes on either side. You could go to the supermarket for a food shop and it would all be cooked by the time you got home!

This Ford GT model is beautiful. When Ford was developing this Ford GT, the test driver was actually Swedish Kenny Bräck. He is known for driving the Indy Racing League and the International Race of Champions. During his IndyCar career, Bräck won the IRL Indycar Championship in 1998 and the Indy 500 in 1999.

Utterly timeless these in my opinion. White over blue would be my colour of choice, same with a Viper or Cobra. I'd be interested to hear how reliable they are overall, being that they aren't too exotic engineering wise.

When it came out in the US it was stickered at around $165k and routinely go for $500k now with low mileage. Just a straight up home run car all around and makes you actually proud to be an American. 😎

Such an iconic car and a great homage to the original GT40. I belonged to a high performance car club and we had one..converted to RHD. Effortless to drive with that lazy Ford motor in the back. But not as inspiring as an Italian supercar to drive. Excellent review by Damien as always.

OMG they say the Jaguar e type is the prettiest car in the world and I won’t disagree. But come on this must be a very close second, it’s just pure muscle from every angle. Could I live with it every day? Probably not, as I noticed you failed to mention the problem that occurs if someone has the blatant disregard to park next to you. Clarkson had a slight problem with entry and exit and I see no reason why it should be any different for any other human being. So really a strikingly beautiful beast with some major floors! Still love it to bits though. 😍

Would be great if they made one with the same original small dimensions and lightness of the original, I remember on the original top gear where Jeremy bought up a major flaw in the design in the door when he parked the car between two cars and because he couldn't open the doors fully and and get his body passed the top of the door he was stuck inside 😊

Yeah, they are tough to get out of in a parking lot. One of my customers used to request that I put two hazard cones in the right and left hand parking spaces so that he and his wife could get out of their car. 😂 I worked at a nice restaurant and the clientele would usually have really nice cars. Half the staff did too. I drove an AMG Mercedes back then myself.

American V8s have always been been better for hot climates and generally are less stressed than their Italian counterparts, which usually have more cylinders in a similar displacement, and tighter bore spacing. All meaning less room for big oil and coolant channels in the block .

Great car, nice review. You've confused close ratio with a short throw however. 6 gears are tall and widely space and with a 2.61 final drive. The shift throw however is what's short. Also i can't believe you think the engine doesn't sound great, but thsts all subjective. Re long trups luggage space is the least worry, as the range with the small tank is very low.

@@kevinparker461 Oh, Im sure an R8 is a better car in every way. But the Ford GT is pretty iconic. It just was never American, its history is about as "real" as Americas space race to the moon. Dont worry... Im not saying they didnt go to the moon, just that there was no race. Just like there was no big "war" with Ferrari. Who were leaving LeMans to focus fully on F1 at the time. This entire car was conceived and designed by the Brits, just like the previous Ford GT. Also just like the next one. Built out of bits and pieces of other, largely British / German cars. Just about the only American bit is the 12 mpg pickup truck engine.
