The first version of GT40’s used the 255 Indy Fairlane engine(1st version, OHV) through 1964. In 1965, 289’s were used up until Le Mans when the MkII was ran using 427’s along side the MkI 289’s. These configurations would run all the way through to the end of 1967 when rules set in place allowed for a maximum capacity of 5litre and a minimum production of 50 cars (revised to 25 in 1969) allowing the JWAE/Gulf GT40’s run 302’s (4.9litres) JWAE also ran Mirage M1’s (modified GT40 chassis and improved aero) with an array of sizes, 289, 305, and 351 in 1967, which they themselves weren’t considered GT40’s, and the program was shuttered.

The MK1 race cars had the smaller 4.2L small block and the street cars had the 289 4.7L and the MKII and IV has the 427 side oiler. FIA eventually changed the rules on Unlimited Displacement which made the 24hr famed winning GT40s as we know them obsolete.
