F ing LOVED the neighbor visit. Mine is Mike, Vietnam vet, wife died, he walks over every time I have a hood up on anything and we shoot the shit. Wife always asks, "Mike show up?" when I'm down there dropping tools. Wouldn't trade that part of the last 20 years for anything. Thanks for your vids Eric.

Great work and a great truck! I really like how you show the way these jobs actually go, even when not super smooth or easy. It looks very tight in that engine bay and even more so where the headers are attached.

You are an excellent mechanic and I like that you include any mistakes or bad calls and you have the patience of a saint! I can relate to your frustration on a much smaller scale, right now I'm struggling with replacing the parking brake cables on my 1997 Celica, the cables, brackets and every bolt is rusted solid so having to drill them out, so frustrating, but I enjoy the challenge. Keep up the good work!

Nice video. Some cars or trucks seemed to be cursed and have you take two steps back for every piece you add. A quick way to check your valves when you have the heads off and cams out is to add some alcohol, windex or similar thin liquid on top of the valves. Just fill up the total area with the fluid and if the valves are leaking the fluid will leak down and run out the ports.

With an interference engine, do you need to get the timing fairly close before you crank down the head bolts on both sides? I'm just wondering if the cam could end up being trapped in the wrong position, unable to rotate through interference positions before the timing marks are lined up for a safe camshaft position.
@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO3 жыл бұрын
Yes. You have to be sure the camshafts are in the correct orientation before you bolt the heads down. You could also choose to bolt the heads down without the cams installed and just install them afterwards. This may be the safer route for less experienced people. Thanks for watching!
@qksilvr732 жыл бұрын
On passnger side head you can put in stud on flat surface and then ziptie or rubber band it to camshaft. Then set head on block. The one that hits ac accumulator. Then the far bottom one if you rock the head up a tad the bottom rear stud will fall in hole. I got head studs since the are reusable where as the factory ones are not.

You said Ford had a 001 allowance. At 3.54 on the video you had some clearance at a centre bolt using 0015. A leak check of the valves before you reinstalled the cam might have been useful.

The spacing between the water passage and the cylinder where it failed looks too small, the same hole on the piston to the right looks better. I would move it away from the piston a millimeter or 2, it looks like a design flaw of trying to get that last millimeter, what does the last millimeter buy the design a few degrees, use a better oil. The gasket hole spacing is good, but the holes under the gasket are bigger, the water moving around the smaller gasket hole doesn't help. I assume a leak down would only occur on the cylinder with the blown gasket and general leakage before the heads are taken off would indicate valve problems.
