Might I say, that Model A you used for your demonstration is beautiful!! Mercy, would I love to have one of those on my farm. I started the install car. Club in Alberta 1958 I bough my 28 ctv in 1956 rom the original owner the local ford mechanicI bought my 1930 Fordor in 1960 I have never seen a number on the fame of a Canadian ford would it be possible the it was n American frame in a Canadian car ?

Sir: An excellent review of the Model "A" ! Very good tips, & info regarding problems related to date of manufacture. I must , however, respectfully disagree with your statement that mechanical brakes work well. My Grandfather ran a garage for decades, & I grew up in his garage ! (my age is 81). I have yet to find ANY vehicle with mechanical brakes where the brakes could be kept equalized. After a few stops, one wheel, or possibly two, (usually not on the same axle) would lock & the others contributed little or no braking action. In my experience, vehicles using rods to operate the brakes were easier to adjust than cable actuated brakes. Cable brakes rusted internally and seized up, or the cables "bird caged) etc. Equalizer bars were some help, but not great. Post WW2, no production vehicles of which I am aware used mechanical brakes. Many American vehicles were fitted with hydraulic brakes in the 30ies, & I believe that Ford held out until 1940, before adopting hydraulics. There is some dispute about 39 or 40. Canadian made Fords all had hydraulic brakes in 40, but American friends tell me that 39 was the first year for hydraulics on Fords. The exception may be the Lincoln. It may have been fitted with hydraulic brakes previous to the rest of the Ford vehicles. I don't know. I understand that honest men often disagree, & your experience with mechanical brakes may have been satisfactory, but mine were not. I owned 3 Model "A" cars, & used them as daily drivers. They were excellent cars, & ahead of their time in many ways. Generally reliable, & fun cars to drive. Thank you for your excellent video, & I have subscribed to your "channel".

Thank you Brian. The Model A uses brake rods, not cables. If everything in the brake system is kept in good condition, they do not experience the problems you mentioned. It doesn't matter how long someone was a mechanic, I have met life-long 80 year old mechanics who still don't know the proper way to adjust or maintain mechanical brakes. That doesn't mean mechanical brake systems are bad, it means the mechanics were bad for not learning and using the proper methods. The older they are, the worse it seems to be with "I've been doing this for 60 years!". They were doing it wrong for all 60 years then. You see how fast the Model A in the video went from 45 MPH to 0. Those brakes were last adjusted 4 years ago. Still working perfectly, with video to prove it.

My first car was a '31 Std Coupe. It was purchased black with creme colored wheels. It had a trunk and the top had been replaced with sheet metal and screwed in with slotted screws. My uncle, who bought it in around '74, took it to a guy who couldn't do anything with out a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other and plenty of excuses for procrastination in his pocket. The guy was to be paid $1000 to do a minor restoration (kept the body on) and paint it. It was supposed to have been painted original Model A colors but when we got it back, it was Chevy Blue (sky blue)......the entire car!! I was so embarrassed but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. It was my 16th bday present. My uncle had the upholstery done in gray mohair. I am way into originality in my cars so this was hard to swallow. We also got a rumble seat kit and I spent alot of time back there during parades and car club tours in the Kern County 100+ degree heat, pouring rain, fog, and wind storms. My aunt and uncle sat up front where they should. I eventually sold it when times got tough in my 20''s. My dream car is a '31 Fordor sedan even though you warn about the dangers of that. I'm glad you gave me a heads up. What a great video. Thanks so much for the quality videos and info.

Neat story James. Don't be too worried about the fordor wood, just be aware of it. If you find a fordor with solid wood in it, go for it! If you find one with rotten wood in it, then either skip it or be prepared for the hardest job of your life. I have replaced or helped replace wood in 4 fordors now. I finally had to draw a line in the sand and say no more!

@@ModelA My uncle owned probably 20 or so antique vehicles over time. The only Model A he owned then was a '31 Deluxe Roadster for a few short years that was unbelievably gorgeous. It stole the show wherever it went. I never understood why he sold it. It was the most beautiful of his collection.

I put it in my heated shop and said that the only was the car will go out will be drive it out I spent $20000 and10 years on it I put all new wood in it which is a very difficult thing from North Carolina as you have no measurements to go buy but I got mine very good cost wood interior tires engine paint glass plus smooth parts did all the work my. Self so don’t pay much for basket case I was Le Baron Bonney last customer One thing most all the repo items were not accurate but I did okay by doing a lot of searching

Maybe. It could also be different compression in cylinders, worn distributor cam, different plug gaps, valve adjustment, carb too rich, lots of things. Start with a tune-up and compression check, then go from there.

Hi Felipe! Normally, I would suggest getting hooked up with a club because you will get lots of help and parts availability. In your case, I just don't know. Please ask around and see if there is another Model A owner around who might help.

Why would oil drip from the oil drain plug if it was sealed well with the drain plug? I had a 2007 Saturn Aura the never dripped any oil, are the washers not made to well now?

It's the lowest point of the motor. Any leak from the pan, front seal, etc. will end up there due to a force called "gravity".

You know what Model A to buy?! A Model A replica that is made a kitcar using modern everything, and most importantly with an electric motor drivetrain. None of that 100 years old crap. When it was new, a model A tudor sedan was like 500 usd (that would be roughly 1 full year of minimum wage at that time). So in today's money, brand new, it was like 15.000 usd. If you find one in ok condition for 1.000 bucks, then you buy it, if not don't waste your money on some junk pile. If you're gonna spend at least be smart about it and enjoy the feeling but keep the modern comfort.

Check with the parts supplier’s (Snyders, CW Moss, Mike’s, to name a few) for available options for your ignition switch system. By all-in-one, I assume you are referring to a complete pop-out anti theft switch with the security primary lead cable. If changing the switch, you’re going to want to retain the pop-out appearance so don’t run to the auto parts store for a replacement switch . The armored primary can still be used if desired. Second suggestion would be to have an A wiring diagram, understand how the A primary was originally wired, and is yours stock or has it been modified . Failing this can result in crispy wires.

Great video, Paul! When I bought my 29 Model A Roadster, I was sold on the rumble seat! Spent 11k, she leaks oil, she has rust on the body, paint on the engine is pealing, several replaced parts that aren't original, but damn it, I love her. My wife and boy ride in the rumble seat and we cruise down the back roads here in Lancaster County PA, waving at the Amish and English who look with big smiles on their faces! This car is probable only worth 5k-10k to a avid Model A enthusiast, but I wouldn't sell it for 100k. It's my dream car, and you can put a price tag on the joy it's brought our little family for the last 3 years! And the best part about Model A, (at least mine) is that I always have a project. Whether it'd cleaning out the carburetor, adjusting the distributor, changing the fluids, greasing, aligning the front end, adjusting the brakes, touching up paint, you name it! my roadster is always a work in progress and it brings me so much satisfaction tinkering with it, and making just how I like it! Thanks for all the videos, Paul. Several of your tips and how-to videos have helped with some of my cars projects.

So we watched your videos, and we thought... Why not, let's give it a try. So we got our 1929 Tudor. It had an older restoration, but it needed work especially in the carburation department, it ran so bad it once blowedup the muffler clear open. The fan was broken, the timing was horrible, it had no power. So we watched your videos, and re-watched them. We want to thank you for the immense service you do for the Model A community. Without you we would have never got into car collecting, and we would have no clue how to fix a Model A. Now we have several cars, a very eclectic collection the includes a 29 Model A, a Ferrari, a Suzuki Samurai, a Bell Air and more on the way. After applying all your recommended fixes, we just took our model A for its first big trip. We drove it 84 miles, it ran on the highway at 60 MPH with no trouble at all, smooth, and boy was it fun. Thank you again. We made a video of our adventure, if you are interested it is on our channel. As I say in the video if you were not so far away I would send you my car and ask you to send it back when you thought it was perfect, because I will never know ail, you do. Cheers and thank you. I'm going to buy a 1930 Ford Model A pickup pretty soon. The Chassis has been refurbished and the engine has been rebuilt but never run. It's got most of its body parts aside from the back of the cab. It had a bed but the owner sold it. Otherwise, its all there. The cowl may be off of a 1926 Model T, based on appearance. The whole thing is $3500.

I usually over pay and under sell. It’s always the other guy that finds the Faberge egg in a barn and gets it for peanuts, or sells a pile of manure for a kings ransom. I’ve stopped telling people what I pay for “my toys”. This makes my brother furious as he is “one of those guys “. Most of the time people throw out big numbers just to try to impress, and it’s anyone’s guess if those numbers are even real. Great buying tips. I am told that early 1931 Model As came with a flat firewall, but later in the year they came with an indented firewall. I'm looking at a car with a "hybrid" indentation of sorts. It looks like a flat firewall that was re-stamped to make an indentation, but it's not teardrop shaped; it's more round-ish. Disaster or factory hack? I was told by someone that during the transition, Henry Ford stamped the regular ones. Any help would be appreciated.

That is true. Some firewalls were re-stamped to the indented type. You have a rare one!

Saw a model a at the dump was 10 yrs old guy a scrapper about 1952. He said 35$ would buy it dad looked at it said smoked not worth 35$ was a 32 V8 dual cowl roadster pickup they filled it with trash burned it up for scrap iron 🤔

Hello in Richie from northern California I bought an unrestored 30 deluxe roadster that usud to be restored and drivable but when the owner passed away it sat for yrs and someone stole the head so the engine needs rebuilt.ot has. Lots of rust in the rear fenders wells and may be 5 condition on a scale of 1-10.ots all together and I have a new convertible top ont for installed what do you think it's worth ?Im thinking about selling it and buying a restored drivable model a sport coupe thanks. Looking for a model A phaeton. I don't see to many for sale, why? Did they not make as many or were they claimed by rot. Any thoughts on what to look for there. I'm fairly new to the channel and thanks for the videos. Good stuff!!!

Genuine question, as someone who lives in an area full of hills that gives Model T's a lot of issue with their gravity fed fuel injection system, could a reasonably well maintained Model A with an overdrive gear for highway driving be a good daily driver?
