Ford Mondeo Mk5 . .... Leaking E G R Valve

Mine (2015) just failed in Australia after 245,000kms. Cracked exactly the same. Mechanic quoted $2200 for the EGR Valve but $3,000 installed. I found one online for $1450. But, then I looked for just the plastic cooler and found it for $189, (or $210 delivered). Thank you again Alan. Your videos are priceless.

I used to fit those egr valves in less than 1 hour. Seems parts and repairs are very expensive in Australia. Have a good one

OK Alan. It looks like I've repaired my leaking EGR valve by welding it with polyamide. The crack was exactly in the same place as you showed. Made 200 km and I don't see any drop of cooling fluid. So once again thank you for your great job and movies. I still observe fluid level and I hope it's will be fine now.

Hi, I gave this plastic part to specialist and he welded it using polyamide from inside and outside. I don't have my car anymore but after this operation, the leak was gone. I also changed elastic pipe. I hope it will be helpful. Regards

we have had them out on numerous ocasions over the thermostat housing issue...waste of time....they need to see the faults elsewhere in the country but they don't because other mk5 cars have not got enough mileage yet and are too few and far between but they won't recognise there is a problem

There was a recall to add the get you home mode and better overheat warnings, my 2016 got the recall. The other recall I had on the 2.0 tdci was for a fuel pipe clip that could break

Hi Alan and thx for your nice Videos. You are very often my first source, when I have to work on my customers SMAX (I normally do VW Group). He has a leaking EGR cooler, too. I saw on my part research, that you can get the cooler as a single part from passably aftermarket manufacturers. May anybody changed only the cooler unit? Because the car has 300.000km, we consider to only change the cooler and give the EGR a good mechanical clean.

Same issue with the Vauxhall 2.0CDTI engines but you can buy the plastic housing separate to the EGR valve.Change a few a month due to an external leak

Hello Alan. This problem seems to be touching me. My EGR valve started leaking in place where plastic case is connected with aluminium part of the valve. As I saw there is a gasket (3:03 min in your movie). Do you think there is a possibility to buy and replace this gasket or make another silicone gasket to repair this crap?

Hi Alan another great video. I need your advice if possible. My mondeo is losing coolant with no obvious leaks, my system is still pressurised the following morning. I initially jumped to the conclusion that my head gasket had gone as I tested the coolant which tested positive for combustion gases, problem I have is that the car runs well and there is no evidence of cream cheese in the oil cap, also the car does not overheat. Having done some research I read that the egr cooler can leak the coolant into the exhaust which I accept is possible, My question is can a leaking egr cooler cause pressure in the cooling system which would explain testing positive for gases in the coolant? Also can I just blank off the egr and join the coolant pipes together to bypass it totally without causing engine management problems?? Regards 👍👍

if it is a mk 5 mondeo 2litre diesel you have then it is possible for the egr rad to crack and put exhaust gasses into the cooling system causing pressure but no you can't really blank it off,,, best to replace the egr unit

I have this engine in my Focus ST (DW10FC) and i have a coolant leak but mine appears to be coming from the blanking plug on the housing, well as far as I can tell without removing it. Have you seen that before?

yes had quite a few leaking from that plug, you can try sealing it or replace the unit

Reading the comments, it looks like other brands and models have the same issue. As Alan said in his mk5 v mk4 video, its no different to any other band / model, with the mondeo we have the advantage Alan telling us the info :)

I just brought a Cmax 2016 tdci and I keep getting a P1102 Error I just done the timing belt which may have been the cause from my research but with no prevail, not I'm looking for other causes Maf is clean and working and now im thinking of taking off the EGR and cooler to see if that's clean. whats your thought have you had any cars with this issue. the car runs and drive fine until you go into about 2.3 to 3rpm and then slow down under engine load or brake then service engine comes up. nightmare its driving me insane. thanks

I already replaced this plastic housing unit. I bought Gearzaar and everything is ok now. I had to replace little oring what is fitted to engine block. I was lucky as I had one spare from shower mixer fits perfectly

Hi Alan. I have an mk5 diesel 2015 and started loosing coolant. No leakages were found. The engine acts properly, no loss of acceleration, no white smoke from the back. I had one time the engine overheat but it was a faulty coolant tank cap and didn't make good pressure. However, every time I drive for like 500km, I lost 1cm of coolant from the tank (always testing on a cold engine). Did a test and found exhaust gases in the coolant. They are checking now the head gasket and leaking Intake Manifold as they told me in the dealership these are the most common issues. Can it be the EGR Valve as well? I know a faulty one can cause loss of coolant, but when they found exhaust gases in the coolant tank, I'm not sure what to think :) . What do you think could be other potential causes for exhaust in the coolant?

@@blackgue found exhaust gas in the coolant tank, so most probably an issue with the head gasket. Its doesnt seem to mix oil with coolant which is a good thing at least. I actually had to wait to get a spot at the garage and its there since today so we'll see how it goes. I hope ita not a crack in the head or the block.

Shame we couldnt have Mk4 running gear with the far prettier body of the Mk5, not that ive had any issues with my Mk5 i just wish it was as engaging to drive as the mk4 was.

Unfortunately Ford USA designed the MK5 for the American market rather than for European customers so they went bigger/heavier is better (land barge?). The MK5 is still better to drive than many of it's rivals but it's no match for driver engagement compared to a MK4/MK4.5 Titanium X Sport!

I’ve got a MK5 Diesel 2017 130km on the clock and every 300 Km the coolant tank was almost empty and had to top it up, no visible leaks anywhere took it to Ford who said the EGR valve needs replacing, anyway after another 6months of driving and checking and topping up the water it no longer uses coolant, in the last 1,000kms it has used no coolant which has got me baffled? I assume they don’t repair themselves and can’t work out why it has suddenly stopped? anyone ever had that before?

My car has been into the garage today with the coolant tank losing fluid. It had waterpump replacement before Xmas as initially they said it was leaking from that. Today they said it had been pressured tested for 10 mins no leak found. He said it could be burning coolant, I've not found and info on this but he did say it could be down to the egr valve. If it is leaking from the egr would it fail the pressure test or not? I'm wanting to get to the bottom of it as my warranty is up next month.m

If the egr valve is leaking you would see coolant stains or coolant leaking which would run down your oil filter. The end caps of the radiator also leak. You have to look between the cooling fan casing and radiator end cap. Some coolant leaks just steam coolant and don’t show up on a coolant pressure tester

Update been back into halfords for them to now find its the egr cooler £790 they want to fix this issue. Warranty won't cover it as its no the valve. Taken to a different garage to hopefully get a better price 🙏
