I actually remember seeing this commercial on TV back in '69. To a 17 year old teenager, this was bigger than life. So many Muscle cars to choose from and so little money to buy one...

I was a Chevy guy in HS back in the days when your family's car brand affiliation was generational and almost like a religion. I drove a '69 L78 SS396 Camaro, but one of my best friends grew up in a Ford family (gasp) and drove a '69 Mach One with a 428 Cobra Jet under a "Shaker" hood. I would still prefer my Rat but that CJ sure was sweet, too. In retrospect it's hard to believe that 17 year olds were lucky enough to have such now-classic and very valuable muscle cars.

Love the old commercials an avid fan of Classic Mustangs cant beat the sound of the engines.
@paulsmit96811 жыл бұрын
I spent a lot of time riding shotgun in the 70s and never saw the 428 CJ beat. We raced them all from souped up Cameros, ROADRUNNERS, even stockcars on the fairgrounds and this car always left me astonished....the squeel off the line made in lag but when the rubber grabbed the road it was always over.
@Rumble6258 жыл бұрын
The Mach 1 was everything they said it was, the quickest car I ever owned, it had the 428 cj 4 speed. The only other car that I drove that could stay with it was a 454 ci stingray, but it was dangerous, at 130 plus mph if you had to lift off the gas quickly the rear end jumped up and was trying to come around on you. You had to slowly lift on the gas or you would go out of control, something the mustang didn't do. Two small things I didn't like about the Mach 1, was the troublesome electric choke, (keep hanging up) and trying to change spark plugs, almost impossible to get to. Cost of the brand new Mach 1 was around 3,500 bucks.
@ahoorakia8 жыл бұрын
+Rumble625 there was no 454 in 69,first 454 was introduced in 1970! how ever it was called LS5 on corvette in 1970
@Rumble6258 жыл бұрын
+ahoorakia Right, the 428 cobra jet was in my 1969 Mach 1 mustang, later on I bought a 1972 corvette that had the 454 4-speed. Just comparing the performance between the two, both were really strong but the corvette seemed to have a slight edge on the Mach 1.during acceleration. The handling of the corvette was tricky as could be at 130+ to be downright dangerous while the Mach 1 was much more stable at the top end. Being able to own and drive both cars was something.

I worked at a Ford dealer in 1969 and 1970. Oh what a time it was. I was 18 and 19 at the time. Went to Vietnam. Came home in 1973 bought a 70 Mach 1 351 Cleveland 4 speed with a Shaker scoop. I still own the car today it runs like a Swiss watch. Still Sports a factory original paint job. 75000 original miles. I don't know if I'll ever sell it it's been a great car. I also remember my best friend and I went into another Ford dealer in April of 69. And they're on the floor was a black 69 Boss 429 with Magnum 500 Wheels. $5,500 was it sticker price. I thought damn that's a lot of money about shit my pants. But nothing compared to what they bring today

Imagine walking into a Ford dealership in 1969 looking over the 428 Cobra Jet, then saying, "I like the Grande better, I think I'll take THAT one!"
@d23g3210 жыл бұрын
Not everyone wanted to drive a muscle car or wanted to (or could) spend the extra $$$, which is why then and now the Big Three sold (sells) millions of six cylinder Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, etc. The Grande was aimed at customers who liked the Mustang image but wanted more of a "personal luxury" car. The Cougar filled that niche under the Mercury brand but some of it leaked over to Ford, and that segment of the market expanded in the '70s. In fact, the non-muscle segment of the pony car market has always accounted for the most sales.
@5769JJ9 жыл бұрын
+Maximaniac72 You could get the Grande with the 428 CJ, 4 speed, Detroit locker rearend, and shaker hood scoop etc. Any Mustang could be ordered with any Engine available....exception of course the BOSS 429.

@mustangfan41 the javelin ended in 74, around the same time the mustang became a Pinto. AMC was bought out in 1987. The challenger bowed out in 73 and returned (as did the charger) as an economy sports car in the late 70's-80's. the camaro ended in 2002 and returned in 2010, 8 years gone. The mustang outsold its competitors most of the time, but rarely out performed them. My 93 Z28 was rated at 275hp. It took mustang until 2005, discounting "special editions", to meet or exceed that rating.
