The 1st thing you should do before you start your lathe is make sure the chuck key is not still in the chuck. 2nd is no loose clothing, 3rd is eye protection. hearing protection is usually not needed especially with turning aluminum.

It hurts me to watch Paul and crew work closely around a running lathe without eye protection. Many years ago I didn’t have a convenient pair of safety glasses when doing some metal working. That was the time a 1/4” chip went right through my cornea, a VERY painful experience and one that permanently affected my sight in one eye. Please, wear safety glasses when using quickly rotating tools. Your ability to see what you are working on is key for your channel. Your family and viewers will thank you.

Yeah I've had a few very painful lessons with hot chips in my eye. I had a blue hot curl land on my tear duct and I swear I heard it sizzle. VERY painful. I'm not very safety oriented but I won't touch the lathe or mill without glasses on. Metal chips hurt and their so sharp is hard to get out without damaging you eye worse
@dalegereaux18632 күн бұрын
Landon ! One thing your Dad forgot to mention is that you never stand directly in line of the spinning chuck. Stand just to the right of the cranks you need to turn. I realize it's an older lathe but it's still not a good idea to lay your tools or calipers on the rails that the carriage glides on. I've also noticed in the past that sometimes the chuck key gets left in the chuck. If someone happens to turn it on and does not remove it first it will shoot across the shop like a rocket. But then again what do I know, I was only a machinist for almost 50 years.

Paul, I agree with the Doc here. When I was a kid, my step dad was a heavy equipment mechanic. He did not use safety gear. Please don't let that be you.

I got used to wearing eye and ear protection from decades of working in factory maintenance departments. I still reach for my safety glasses when I walk into Walmart (same building type) and have no hearing damage. I still wear safety glasses when using tools like angle grinders and whenever there is a danger. When I gave my 9 year old nephew his first tool set to work on the garden tractor I got for him, safety glasses were part of the tool set; he actually wears them on his own. I worked with an old guy with one eye; he lost it young while working on a car. Screw driver fell into the cooling fan, shot back up, and stabbed his eye. Many of the old millwrights were missing fingers from before safety became important. I worked as an industrial electrician for 25+ years and managed to not get any permanent bodily damage. Got out of the factory when my kids grew up.

Step #1. Make sure the chuck key is removed. Wasn't it Shawn that turned on the lathe with the chuck keys still in?

@davidhawthorne96372 күн бұрын
@@Oldtimered The chuck key is a VERY important step 1 that could take a life as well as loose clothing. Not having hearing or eye protection can hurt you (possibly permanent damage) but usually won't "unalive" a person.

That double 'O' kid is playing university level ball. Something for everyone to think about. The 55 is my all time favorite tri-five. My very first car was a 56 non Belair, same 2 door 210 model with a huge dent in the pass rear quarter. I did sort of fix the dent and painted her silver. Built her up with a built 327 cu ft, 350hp, long tube headers, power pack heads, Offenhauser cross ram intake, a pair of Holley carbs, Muncie rock crusher, custom made traction bars, stacked leaf springs, and always seemed to have bald rear tires! lol

For setting your tool height on your lathe. Get a 6 inch machinist ruler and put it between the cutter and the work. If it is straight up and down it’s dead on center. If turning od I lower it down just a Touch ID raise it a touch. Oh yea and wear your safety glasses so you can continue to make cool videos.

@MrGarfield42 күн бұрын
I used the same 6” scale technique to set my tool height MANY years ago when I used to run a Hardinge tool makers lathe. BTW, the FISRT step when running a lathe or milling machine is eye protection. You only get 1 pair per person. It would be a painful bummer to lose 1 or both. Besides, an eye loss would mess up the eyecrometer.
