Some tips to anyone working on one of these Saginaw steering boxes. Set the steering shaft with new bearings in place less any shims and loosely install two bolts. You can then see the gap that needs to be taken up by the shim pack. Using your shims find a combination that just fills the gap. Add one additional thin shim and that will give you a good starting point for setting the preload on the steering shaft. There are timing marks on the gears. Assemble the bare sector shafts to the box so you can see the timing marks, then install the outside cover onto the shaft. Use some grease to hold the adjuster bolt in place during installation and use a screwdriver to thread the adjuster bolt through the outside housing. It is best to have the steering wheel in place when setting the gears due to wear that can cause tight spots in the complete rotation.

Yeah, I took the long way around🤣, but it turns super nice now so I think I got it pretty close. Thanks John!!!

Success! You just made that NAA steering happy again after 70 years! Just add the oil, top bearing, paint and a steering wheel.

You might have saved another one. Being it was your first you always have great memories of her and hope you were the first to breach her seal and bearings. Now with the temps supposedly going to be in the 70s next week, you need to get your planters and tillage equipment ready.

Yes, it made perfect sense. You conveyed that all of those tolerances were adjustable either by positioning the sector and gears laterally inside the housing or up and down with the shims on the bottom of the shaft housing. It is understood that more adjustments may need to be made once the entire assembly is on the tractor and the steering links are attached to the ends of those spline shafts. It is a pretty straightforward assembly -- more difficult to get the rusty parts apart than putting together with new stuff. I really, really want to see that little tractor restored. Every time you work on it I think of my Uncle Claude Bruner who rebuilt these tractors for many years here in Daylight, Indiana. He had a couple of guys who worked with him and always had two or three of them restored and for sale. He would pick them up at farm sales over in Kentucky and southern Illinois and maintained the largest parts inventory for Ford tractors in several states.

I think I’m gonna go ahead and try to clean it up and paint it a little bit. I overhauled the motor several years ago so it’s just a matter of fixing leaks and cleaning it up again. Thanks!!!

One more project on the way to completion. Sure takes patience to do preliminary fit-up and check for proper end-play. Should steer much better now.

Ross, You should have had a dial micrometer to measure the old stack thickness of shims. Then you could add a few thousands as needed. My two cents only. Would save you time and frustration. 👍🇺🇸✌🏻

Yeah, I think if I had done some measuring even with a caliper, I could’ve done it faster, but I did eventually get there, even though I took the long way around 🤣

You're not a moron, I get it a lot of feel with three fine adjustments working in the blind, so tedious. Good job Ross! I have Fordson Dexta I may have to adjust at the least.

Your videos are about the right length. Their are a couple utubers that I no longer watch that ramble on for a hour or longer and it gets boring. They show very little content. They can talk for hour about nothing important. Over explain everthing and act like we are all stupid. Please continue. What you are doing
