Yes, I still have the Volvo. But today we get to help my Uncle for once! Also, my daughter Charlotte joins in for some delightful commentary.
The power steering pump went out on my uncle's 2001 Ford Ranger. This is the fun, family-filled solution to that issue. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching!

Now THAT is what I call patience! If I tried to help my Dad do anything at that age, he would have sent me away with some probably harsh words. But you and your Uncle not only didn't do that, you added her into the "loop" in helping. Nicely done!! Don't get me wrong, my Dad was a Master Plumber...and what he was dealing with at a Veterans Hospital...well it's best I wasn't there, if you know what I mean. On to the next video!! Love the mechanical episodes! That Ford pump was used in SOOOO many Fords, I have replaced a few, that tool is a pain. They are known to howl and fail, but at least they are very cheap. However, (avid Ford mechanic) the power steering system uses standard ATF, Dextron 3. Universal power steering fluid will cause it to fail prematurely or make noise. Love the content, keep it coming!

The Ranger calls for Mercon V ATF fluid for the power steering fluid in the manual as most Fords of this era do. I'm not sure what the difference is with the power steering fluid you guys put in, but I think the ATF might be a bit thicker. That's what I put in my 2001 Mazda B3000 when I did the steering rack, which is really just a Ranger with a Mazda badge so it's the same truck.

A length of hose with one end connected to the fitting and a rag wrapped around the loose end in pan would have saved the cleanup. You can also flush by jacking the front end up and with key "on" engine "off" turn the steering wheel/wheels back and forth from stop to stop so the motion of the rack and pinion unit will act as pump and the fluid will flow, great for bleeding the air out because you are pulling fluid from the reservoir instead of using the pump to push and fluid and mix air with it. just make sure the reservoir is kept full, No whines, No drips, No errors. Your little helper was a delight. Thank You ...

-As to Ford Transmissions, I had a'97 Aerostar that when you drove it at high speed on the interstate, when you exited, it would "bang" shift. All you had to do was turn the car off and then start it back up, and it was fine again. I was told the F-4EAT transmission, also used on Nissan Pathfinders and Subaru Outbacks as well, all had this issue when a certain sensor in the engine went bad. He recommended rebuilding the thing; The car ran fine and was getting old, so I never did it. The Aerostar looked GREAT but had 165,000 miles. A contractor who worked on my house wanted it BAD, and I finally called him up one day in 2020 and offered it to him for $1000. He was at my house one hour later with a bank check! I bought the former Avis rental car in 2003 from a used car lot in Orlando for $3000 with 80,000 miles, so I guess I got my money's worth out of that van. About 6 months ago he showed up at my house; The van was almost unrecognizable, it was so beat up. So much for all those hours I spent waxing it to keep it looking presentable~

Glad to see you making another video Elliott! But.... 8:10 "These things just go bad, they never go bad at a convenient time, or when you're not driving" I have a 2003 Ford Focus that has been sitting for a while, and I went to move it the other day. Prior to that, the car ran just fine (all things considered). Then out of nowhere, I had no power steering. So I open the hood, and there is power steering fluid all over the rear, and left side of my engine bay. I still need to figure out what let loose. Finally, sending some Happy First Birthday wishes! Cheers!

Why on Earth can't the pulley be put on the new pump, on the workbench? I was also thinking that you could've waited to remove the pulley from the pump, after it was removed from the car? It doesn't make sense that Ford and the service manuals all recommend doing it this way? If you put the pump in a vice etc. what exactly is the difference?
@reidster87
@reidster87 Жыл бұрын
I believe at least one of the power steering pump's mounting bolts is inaccessible when the pulley is attached.
@rhekman
@rhekman Жыл бұрын
10:16 It does seem like putting the pulley on first would make more sense, but at least one of the mounting bolts is both barely shrouded by the pulley and slightly too long to sneak past. One of those "mechanics vs. engineers" things my grandfather would always gripe about.
