This popped up in my feed, and I just watched your linked fast Mondeo ranking order video. My current daily driver is 21 years old now! A rare 2004 Ghia X V6 estate with the 3.0 Duratec V6 and a manual box - a combination they only did for a couple of years or so. I think most of the Ghia Xs were 2.5 and auto. Nice and comfortable, lugs my equipment around, and has a bit of poke when I need it. Thirsty & high tax, but I keep on fixing it and keeping it going, because I like it!

"Thirsty & High tax" with the consistent general maintenance. I respect this comment 🫡 i wish more people would appreciate Good Vehicles despite age. This is the definition of Smiles-Per-Gallon. Too many of us (including myself) chase newer models to "keep up with the Jones's"

Hand on heart my favourite car I've had. I ran one for 3 years and it was just a beast. Quick, refined, smooth ,sounded great, spacious, well equipped.... SVE-developed car and very very fondly remembered by those who worked on that program.

Owned one for 12years, THE BEST CAR IVE EVER OWNED,..mine was a 04 plate,..recently brought a 20plate car and its not even a quarter as good as my ST220....sadly there not suited to the silly modern world we live in and especially not London, only problem i ever had was coolant hoses perishing over time, a full silicon hose kit is the best option to replace all the hoses....they are a proper car

I had one for about 5 years. Loved it. Best handling of any car I've ever owned. Moved on to a Mk4 2.5T Mondeo after the ST220, and whilst it was smoother and faster it didn't have the same buzz factor.

I had an 03' Mazda 6 with the 3.0L Duratec. I absolutely loved it! It's ~400lbs (~180kg) lighter than the Mondeo. So the 0-60 was around 6.5 seconds and it handled like a dream. Sadly, we didn't get the 2nd gen Mondeo in the US, and I don't think y'all ever got the V6 version of the 1st gen Mazda 6.

Got two MK3 Mondeo, 2004 ST220 in Machine Silver bought in 2024 with 74k, paid £2400 bargain full Ford SH. Mods Milltek exhaust. This is my 2nd ST220 had 2004 in Performace Blue from 2004 until 2010, this is still on road as was for sale last year. My daily is 2007 ST TDCi in Performance Blue with 132k pulls well as had Stage 1 Remap, great fuel economy can get around 580 miles on tank of diesel. Love them both 👍

Have had 2 of these and still run my 06 plate performance blue hatch as a daily driver, truly awesome car for something that is ~18 years old. Never had any major issues with it, yes the tax and mpg stings a bit, but as Clarkson once said it really is the only car you'll ever need! A future classic for sure, never going to part with it.

The other main Mondeo to look out for future investment is the 2.5T/XR5. Same engine as the Focus ST/RS and very few sold as it was during the time of the tax changes for company cars so they're very limited in numbers. They're an amazing car, especially if you can get a Titanium trim level and they're cheap and easy to get power out of as all the work is there thanks to all the Focus tuners.

Had a silver 2.2 diesel ST and really enjoyed owning it. Handled really well and was the same silver and 18"wheel combo as the car in the video. Replaced it with a 3.0 Audi A6 diesel which was beautifully built, more powerful, but somehow less enjoyable - I never really connected with it.

Thanks for the comment. The ST155 is another brilliant car and, as you say, a load of fun to drive. As for the Audi or any of the more "premium" brands, they do lack a bit of character / soul... I think they are hard to really connect with, yet jump in an old Ford and the "smiles per mile" ratio increases dramatically. Thanks for watching, I hope the video brought back some fond memories of your Mondeo.

My Dad used to have the V6 Mondeo's as company cars back in the late 90's and early 2000's finishing the run of fast Mondeos with an '02 ST220 and then an '05 ST220. They were the cars that got me into cars and ended up buying one of my own back in 2020 and really struggled with the lack of low end torque. I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but my daily driver at the time was a 2020 BMW 520d MHT and found the performance far more accessible. Also, you could get red leather in the performance blue models but it was seldom selected.

I bought a brand new ST24 in summer 98 and I absolutely loved the car, but as mentioned in the video the fuel consumption was horrific for a daily driver, if I drove it with a clog foot I could easily get the MPG down to almost single figures - mid teens was actually an average, though back then I was working for myself quite successfully so paying for it was hardly the problem. I felt the problem wasnt so much that lovely creamy and peppy V6 which was a sheer delight to use but more the humungous lardy weight of the vehicle I remember thinking at the time "god I hope I never have to get out and push this thing" and thought Ford should have made a more concerted effort to weight reduce everything across the vehicle not just a token lightweight soundproofing, imagine that lovely pretty powerfull V6 in a vehicle half the weight of an early mondeo....that vehicle could have gone toe to toe with a Sierra Cosworth all day long and not been embarrassed. I also bought later on a second hand low milage Diesal MK3 TDI 130 and was amazed back then at just how quick it was for a diesal.

@cornishcarcollectors one memory of my ST220 was being pulled over by the local constabulary on a bypass near where I live,I got let off with a warning as the lovely officer said he couldn't get a proper reading from his speedometer, but he did say that he hit 135 trying to catch up to me.😬. Had a few old Ford's also, one of my other favourites was a J plate 2.0 Sierra Sapphire 4x4 Ghia X,quite rare even back then.

Thanks for the comment. These ST220s really do not feel like a performance Ford, but they are effortless and once up in the revs they do go well. I do understand your point though... the performance credentials of the ST220 are not obvious and it's more of a "warm saloon" than a "super saloon". Thanks for watching.

The probleme with these (and the Focus ST170) is...there are a lot of parts and accesories which are not Mondeo standard as in..coming from normal versions. So if you are in a country NOT UK, you will be having a hard time finding spare parts and all which are "ST220 only" and you will be ending up looking on eBay for them..very complicated when compared to, let's say, a 2.8VR6 Passat or a 3.2 FSi..which are more integrated with lower versions.

I like the ST220 a lot but the fuel consumption seems to be worse than my manual 530i E60. Probably because the M54B30 engine has Vanos and the Mondeo engine doesn't, I think, have varaible valve timing or inlet tract length (which is where it differes from the X-Type's 3.0 engine).

Thanks for the comment. The ST220 certainly does some things better than a Cosworth such as long and effortless drives, and in many ways being the more modern car it is better... particularly as a daily / transport. Not entirely sure it's as iconic, cool, handsome, visceral or fun to drive as a Sierra Cosworth though. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the comment. I do agree the 6-cylinder Fords of old were properly cool and fun to drive. The more modern 6-cylinder Fords drive well and are effortless and smooth, but they do miss out on a more visceral, engaging and soulful driving experience. @cornishcarcollectors I think the front wheel drive v rear wheel drive debate is like marmite.Maybe also an older generational v modern thing. They grew up with power understeer and torque steer. To many of us it's just an alien concept. We expect to be powering out of a turn with one hand free for gearshifting and with a nice docile neutral feel through the steering regardless of the power input. The Sweeney just wouldn't have been the same with a 3 litre Mondeo v Essex V6 manual Consul/Granada.

Thanks for the comment - I've not experienced these Mk3s being "rust buckets". I do recognise the Mondeos that came before the Mk3 were more prone to rust, and sure the Mk3s are getting older and therefore some preservation is required... but not sure they are "rust buckets". Also, these 3.0ltr cars are fairly torquey. Sure there are faster, torquier equivalents out there but again not something I would hold against the ST220. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it and welcome different opinions on the cars I feature. 👍

@@cornishcarcollectors I would not trust Ford of that era after seeing the issues. They are solid cars minus the body issues, and they look really, really good. My neighbours have two fords (fiesta and Mondeo) bought from new, now one of them looks like every single panel was painted in a different factory. My mother had a Ka, with all the usual problems and Allen key locks.

I had one a few years ago and it was terrible, was so disappointed. It your wanting reasonably quick then do NOT buy an ST220. It unfortunately doesn't deserve the ST badge at all. The interior is nice enough, seats are great however the power delivery of the car is very gutless... Mine had a full miltek cat back, genuine pipercross induction kit and loads of other bits, sounded great and had no get up and go at all. And no the car wasn't broke because I test driven a few of them before I bought it and they were slower than mine. It's a shape. For example my current cat Subaru Forester Turbo 2.0 XT. So same engine as the Impreza this is only 175bhp standard and my god it's 10 times the car that ST220 was 50 bhp more and a V6 but still couldn't lay down a Reasonable amount of grunt.. also unfortunately now these old MK3 mondeoes like to rust. So most are completely rotten now. But it's a cool car if you want something bad on fuel and very slow. :)

If you've seen my Hot Mondeos video then you'll know that I too recognise these ST220s are more "warm saloons" than "super saloons", but I still feel they are a special car... they are effortless and comfortable cars with a decent spec, and they are very handsome. If your interest is in speed then it is probably best to look to alternatives. The ST220 though remains deserving of its enthusiast following and I am pleased there are people out there preserving them. Thank you for watching. 👍

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
